Last week saw only six of the ten scheduled matches contested within the Premier League due to a number of FA Cup ties. Perhaps the title of this post should have been 9.6 matches to go for it to be technically correct, but 9.5 makes for a much more recognizable number. The point is that we’re now into the business end of the season when fixture congestion due to the conclusion of multiple extra-league tournaments wreaks havoc on league schedules and can make understanding the likely outcome of the season just a bit more difficult. Last weekend’s action is a bit simpler to understand given the concentration of idle teams in the upper half of the table. Of the eight teams who didn’t play their scheduled fixtures , four of them occupied the top five positions within the league while all but one of them were in the top 11 positions.
