China revives Red Flag limo in display of ambition

The massive frame, bug-eyed headlights, huge retro front grille and scarlet glass hood ornament can mean only one thing: China’s big and brash Red Flag limousine is back.

The giant homegrown sedans were once among the most distinctive icons of the People’s Republic. Chairman Mao Zedong perched in the back of one to inspect Red Guards in the 1960s. President Richard Nixon rode through Beijing in one during his breakthrough 1972 visit. Bob Hope rode in one too, and was mysteriously told that the trunk was off-limits.

The Red Flag disappeared in the 1980s, replaced by humbler joint efforts with foreign partners that produced boxy Lincoln copies and rebranded black Audis. Now Beijing is reviving the brand to its former glory as a rolling chrome-and-steel embodiment of national pride and ambition.

Since this spring, the newly designed L7 model has conveyed dignitaries including French President Francois Hollande and South Korea’s Park Geun-hye in motorcades from Beijing’s airport.

“China wants to make clear to foreign visitors that it will not become just another Western society with Western goods and taste,” said Jonathan Holslag, a research fellow at the Institute for Contemporary China Studies at the University of Brussels. “China in the first place wants to be different from the West, and in the second place to be respected as a strong, muscular power.”

The L7 is a 6-meter (20-foot) dreadnought of an automobile, boasting a mammoth 12-cylinder engine and roughly resembling an oversized Bentley Flying Spur.

Foreign dignitaries and officials above the rank of minister get the L7, while top-level Chinese officials are chauffeured in an even bigger version, the leviathan L9, which reportedly costs about $800,000 and looks like the kind of car rock stars might drive into swimming pools. Almost 40 centimeters (15 inches) longer than the L7, the L9 comes with an armored chassis, rear-opening “suicide doors” and an optional sun roof from which Chinese leaders emerge when reviewing troops.

Ministerial-level officials are assigned the much more modest H7, which starts at around $50,000.

Chinese car enthusiast Liu Weining, who owns a 2000 version based on the Audi 100 and wishes he could afford one of the latest models, thinks the future of the brand is bright because of its iconic status.

“It’s a sturdy car with a very distinctive look …read more

Lisa Detanna of Raymond James and Elizabeth Kabler Host a Day at Sunnylands, “Camp David West”

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Lisa Detanna, Managing Director and Senior Vice President of Investments at Raymond James, Inc. along with the Los Angeles Wealth Advisory Team of Raymond James recently hosted a special event at Sunnylands, often referred to as “Camp David West,” the family home of Walter and Lenore Annenberg who served in prominent roles in the Reagan Administration.

Sunnylands hosted 7 US Presidents and has long been a place for world leaders to gather to solve problems, discuss issues and get to know each other socially while being entertained by celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Gregory Peck and more recently John Legend. The estate sports a golf course and sits on 200 acres. The visitor’s center has had over 60,000 guests in its first year of being open to the public.

As noted in “The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands” in the March 8, 2013 edition of The Beverly Hills Courier, the day began with a tour of the residence, which houses replicas of over a billion dollars in art work, since donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The guests then saw the film in the visitor’s center theater about what Sunnylands hopes to accomplish in the future.

At lunch, Lisa gave a presentation about Raymond James and how they help individuals, families, institutions, foundations, endowments and not-for-profit organizations to analyze, plan and choose investments which are conflict-free, non-biased and provide top performance in good markets as well as offer more protection in tough markets. She emphasized Raymond James‘ philosophy that philanthropy and foundations are an extension of a family.

Lisa’s connection with the Annenberg family began when she met Marcia Wilson Hobbs, fellow Board Member of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce. Marcia spent time with the Annenberg family as a child when her parents, friends of Lenore and Walter all served together for Ronald Reagan in the 1980’s. Marcia introduced Lisa to Elizabeth Kabler, Lenore Annenberg‘s daughter.

Elizabeth and Marcia spoke at the Sunnylands event about what it was like living in and visiting the home when they were children. They described the elaborate menus created for the Presidents and other Heads of State who would stay on the estate. Sunnylands is planning to publish a cookbook to recreate some of the recipes from those days. Marcia also talked about the Annenberg art collection, which Walter Annenberg had taken the time to educate her about, leading to her great interest …read more

Seth MacFarlane Academy Awards: Actor Hosts The 2013 Oscars

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Seth MacFarlane joins the ranks of Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, and Frank Sinatra Sunday evening as he hosts the Academy Awards.

Certainly Billy Crystal, Johnny Carson and Bob Hope are the three that stand out as the paragons of class and effectiveness and comedic balance in the history of the Oscars,” MacFarlane told the AP last week. “I’m going to go out there and certainly be mindful that that’s what works but also try and inject some of what I do into the mix and hopefully come out with something that is fresh and surprising and has an edge but doesn’t completely thumb its nose at the Oscars.”

MacFarlane was seen as a risky choice by some for his boundary-pushing sense of humor.

Billy Crystal Has Some Advice For 2013 Oscars’ Host Seth MacFarlane On ‘Katie’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Anticipation for the 2013 Academy Awards is building with the Oscars set to air on February 24. Katie Couric devoted her entire show on Monday to discussing this year’s nominees and past winners and hosts.

Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal were on hand to discuss past Oscars hosts like Bob Hope, who holds the record for hosting the Academy Awards the most times with 19 appearances.

“There are hosts for different eras. I kind of like it old school… because they knew what they were there for,” said Goldberg, who has hosted the Oscars four times and has the distinction of being the first woman to host by herself. “They were just funny, they didn’t have to prove it. Hosting is not an easy thing and not everyone can do it.”
