Cholesterol connection to Rett Syndrome

Statins, a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs found in millions of medicine cabinets, may hold the key to finding a treatment for Rett Syndrome, a severe autistic disorder that affects young girls. The Connecticut-based Rett Syndrome Research Trust (RSRT) has sponsored work to identify a number of targetable genes that act on the Rett gene, MECP2 (methyl-CpG-binding protein 2), in mice… …read more

An unusual “nanowire” coating for medical implants may soon be helping broken bones and joint replacements to heal faster. Nicola Formichetti Officially "Too Busy" For Lady Gaga

By Justin Fenner

Nicola Formichetti’s list of jobs in fashion used to be long – and we do mean long. But in a recent interview, the designer, stylist, and fashion executive said he’s cut one big commitment from his life: Lady Gaga.

“She’s going to be my BFF forever, but my ex-assistant Brandon is heading that project,” he told WWD in an interview about his work as the creative fashion director at Uniqlo. (He’s also currently the artistic director of Diesel and the fashion director of Vogue Hommes Japan, for those keeping track.) “I’m too busy with [other commitments]. I’ve done two albums with her, it’s been like five years, and you know, I’m always going to be involved somehow, but I cannot do it every day. She changes 12 times a day; it’s insane.”

Meet the Star of Avicii's Latest Video: Denim & Supply

By Randy Miller

What happens when music and fashion collide? If Grammy-nominated Avicii and Denim & Supply’s “Wake Me Up” video is any indication, it’s a perfect harmony of style and sound. In the coproduced single (the first from the album True, which will be released on Sept. 17), the duo bring together the rustic strum of guitar with the equally earthy vibe of Ralph Lauren‘s Fall 2013 designs, most notably a navy military jacket that appears prominently throughout.

Of the innovative collaboration, David Lauren explained, “Ralph Lauren is always looking for ways to break new ground with innovative advertising . . . Avicii’s music, combined with Mark Seliger’s legendary experience shooting fashion and music icons, has allowed us to showcase the brand to our customers in an entirely new way.”

If you were as enamored with the video as we were – and the four minutes wasn’t nearly enough – wait until you see our exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from the stylish shoot. …read more

Reed Krakoff to Buy Reed Krakoff

By Justin Fenner

On Tuesday, Reed Krakoff (the man) announced that he and a group of investors would buy Reed Krakoff (the brand), which had been exploring “strategic options” since Krakoff said he would leave his post as creative director of Coach to focus on his own brand in April.

Coach, which is the parent company of Krakoff’s eponymous brand, put it up for sale shortly after Krakoff made his decision not to renew his contract earlier this year. (Stuart Vevers, creative director of Loewe, was hired to replace Krakoff in short order.) It also put a condition in the sale contract stipulating that Krakoff would lose $3 million in bonuses if his brand didn’t sell by July 29.

Whether Krakoff’s bonus was saved by today’s sale is unknown, but what is known is that Krakoff is now master of the brand that bears his name, and he’s in pretty good company. It’s great news for him, but Coach still suffered some bad news today. WWD reported that the venerable accessories brand fired around 200 people following weak fourth-quarter earnings results.

Krakoff (again, the man) will leave Coach officially in June 2014.

Buying This Gucci Really Might Save the World

By Leah Melby

Proving an eco-friendly handbag can look like something you’d find on Madison Avenue, rather than a ramshackle setup in Peru, is Gucci for the Green Carpet Challenge. The luxury brand partnered with Green Carpet Challenge creator Livia Firth and the National Wildlife Federation to make the same gorgeous accessories you’re used to seeing, but this time with guaranteed zero deforestation. The bags, seen above and below, are made with leather from the Brazilian Amazon that is totally traceable from source to finished product while also being ruled by Gucci’s regular quality standards.

The meeting of two worlds can be a beautiful thing. See shopping information below should you want to show your support (and update your accessory closet).

Tune In, Sit Up: Vogue Gets Real on Your TV

By Justin Fenner

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund is no stranger to being documented on camera, but this year’s finalists are getting something others haven’t: a TV series.

Vogue, the CFDA, and Condé Nast Entertainment have been working with the arts-focused network Ovation to produce a series called The Fashion Fund. The show, which will begin airing six one-hour episodes this December, has all the hallmarks of other competitive reality shows: a field of diverse and talented contestants, tests of the designers’ design skills and business savvy, and a grand prize that includes $300,000 and a year of mentoring with an industry giant.

“This is the real deal,” said Ovation’s chief creative officer, Robert Weiss, in a statement. “There have been a lot of fashion competition series on television, but nothing comes close to matching the authenticity and talent found in The Fashion Fund.”

The Fund, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, has been dipping its toes into reality programming ever since it started. The documentary Seamless followed the 2004 finalists Doo-Ri Chung, Alexandre Plokhov, Jack McCollough, Lazaro Hernandez (who won that year’s prize) as they created their presentations for the Fund’s selection committee. In 2011 and 2012, Vogue produced a web series that also chronicled the finalists’ journeys to the ultimate prize. It was called, naturally, The Fashion Fund.

The Secret to Burberry's Success

By Randy Miller

What vital source does Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts credit for the British label’s success? Energy. And we’re not talking about the kind that powers your lightbulb or fuels the new electric BMW!

In addressing the challenge of keeping pace in the rapidly changing digital landscape, Ahrendts writes, “How can we respond? The answer might be surprisingly simple. A powerful force we’re all born with – Energy.” Describing the force as an “emotional electricity,” that powers and connects people to achieve success, she highlights the three guiding principals of Burberry’s core values: trust, intuition, and belief.

To quote Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you did, they will forget what you said, but they will never forget the way you made them feel,” and leaving on the positive note of promising to share her LinkedIn journey with followers, we can’t say we don’t feel inspired!

Blake Lively Doesn't Dress For You – and 6 Other Lucky Revelations

By Randy Miller

When Lucky sat down with Blake Lively in Germany (where her husband, Ryan Reynolds, just so happened to be wrapping a film), she arrived wearing scarlet lips and a panama hat. The past few days, however, had been spent in ripped jeans and a baseball cap – a far stretch from the floral Givenchy skirt and grommeted Anthony Vaccarello gown she models within the magazine’s September issue pages.

But Serena van der Woodsen, she is not! “I never think about how other people will respond to the way I dress,” she told Lucky. “Dressing up is all about reflecting how I feel.”

For an explanation of why Blake is just as likely to turn up at the grocery store in L.L.Bean moccasins or crystal heels and more surprising quotes, just keep reading. …read more

How Calvin Klein Will Switch Things Up at New York Fashion Week

By Justin Fenner

After years of hosting New York Fashion Week shows at its corporate offices, Calvin Klein plans to move its Spring 2014 show to a new location. It’ll also scale back from two shows in a day to just one.

The brand announced Tuesday that it will stage a single Calvin Klein Collection show (2 p.m. local time on Sept. 12) at Spring Studios, an as-of-yet unopened outpost for the British creative agency of the same name. In addition to office space, Spring Studios includes event space and a fully functioning photo studio. Calvin Klein will be the only brand to show its wares there for Spring 2014, and the office will officially open later this Fall.

Calvin Klein will also host an afterparty on another floor of Spring Studios that serves two purposes: it will celebrate Francisco Costa’s 10 years as the brand’s creative director, and it will also officially introduce the brand’s latest fragrance Downtown to the global market. In May it was announced that Rooney Mara was the face of the new scent.

But Calvin Klein isn’t the only brand that’s experiencing changes for New York Fashion Week. Read on to see which of our other favorite fashion brands is doing things differently for Spring 2014. …read more
