The G550 couldn’t seem more obnoxious around our editorial office’s eco-conscious Ann Arbor environs: It’s huge, looks like it could eat a Prius, and absolutely stinks of money. But these are classic parts of the G-wagen experience, an uncommon mixture of old-timey road manners, military-industrial styling, and unexpectedly sprightly acceleration. Taken individually, only the styling and acceleration should appeal, but all together, the refreshed-for-2013 G550 delivers a sense of goodness and satisfaction that’s typified the G-wagen breed for some time. The Continental: The Essen Motor Show and a Night in New York

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Now more than a month after all the glitz and, ahem, more glitz of the SEMA show, the tuner scene in Germany is focusing on its own display of power and glory. It’s called the Essen motor show, and it’s become a fixture on the automotive calendar. Over this past week, numerous carmakers and tuners have shown their loudest and most-powerful ideas.
I’ve already penned a piece on one Essen special, the Lexus TMG 650—a twin-turbocharged LS that would rival a Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. Beyond that, Toyota has brought the Yaris R1A, which is offered to private teams for rally racing. And there is the racing version of the GT 86, sold in the U.S. market as the Scion FR-S. The GT 86 CS-V3 is designed to race in the VLN class; it features a strengthened floor assembly, a racing-exhaust system, a modified suspension and stronger brakes, and the naturally aspirated engine remains untouched.

Subaru is displaying the WRX STI S206 Nürburgring Challenge, a version of the WRX STI whose turbo 2.0-liter flat-four is tuned to produce 316 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. It features a carbon-fiber roof and rear wing, an aluminum hood, and 19-inch BBS wheels. Beyond this limited-production car, of which just 100 units will be made, there is the pleasantly clean WRX STI “Back to the Roots.” This STI gets matte blue foil, gold-colored 18-inch BBS wheels, and a KKS Performance exhaust system. Finally, there’s the WRX STI “Rockabilly JDM,” a hatchback clad in light matte-gray foil and graced with somewhat obnoxious “stickerbombing” trim.
Ford is showing tuned variations of the Focus ST, including a station wagon; there also is the Transit Custom, an attempt at dressing up a commercial vehicle as a stylish passenger car. Renault has on display the Renault 1.6 NEC Junior and the Twingo R1 for cup racing. And Škoda is showing two concepts of the Citigo, the Volkswagen Up‘s sister model.
Mini is taking things to the maximum with a Countryman fitted with “Mini Ray” accessories, a John Cooper Works GP, and a John Cooper Works modified for on-track performance. Meanwhile, BMW has been showing a number of vehicles fitted with every imaginable M Sport option.

Europe’s Fun Compacts
Here’s another one of those luxury compacts that the U.S. is missing out on: VW’s Czech subsidiary Škoda has added a Laurin & Klement version of its compact crossover, the Yeti. Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement were Škoda’s founding fathers—today, the moniker denotes the Czech manufacturer’s most-luxurious offerings. Power for the Laurin & Klement Yeti ranges from 115 hp to 170 hp. The level of craftsmanship in the Yeti surpasses that of most larger cars. I drove a Yeti through Namibia for a week this summer and was more than pleased with its on- and off-road capabilities.
Kia is releasing more details on the European-market Pro_cee’d GT, and has announced a five-door cee’d GT as well. The 1.6-liter “Gamma” engine makes 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, and the 0-to-62-mph sprint takes a claimed 7.9 seconds. Don’t you wish you would get this instead of the new Forte?

Celebrating Cadillac
Last Tuesday was a remarkable night in New York with four automotive events all over the city. I spent the evening with Cadillac, celebrating the brand’s 110-year history. The incredible 1959 Cyclone concept lent the event a dramatic aura. At the event, I had the opportunity to meet Cadillac’s vice president of marketing, Don Butler. I asked him what’s the most significant car in Cadillac’s history. His reply was the first one built, of course, and then perhaps the famous 1959 model. Which car symbolizes Cadillac’s future? It hasn’t been built yet, he says, implying that we soon will see very significant new models surpassing the scope of the brand’s current lineup. A flagship sedan? I got a smile as an answer. And will Cadillac need to keep a V-8 engine? Yes, at least in the foreseeable future. Sources from within GM tell me that the long-term future of V-8 engines in passenger cars is by no means secure. It’s good news, then, that they will stay with us for a while.

I was pleased that a video compiled for the event showed the Allanté, a 1980s convertible that has been the target of misguided criticism and ridicule, and figured in many a lame “worst cars” list. Somewhat conservatively styled by Pininfarina, the Allanté was a conceptually and technologically interesting attempt at making a world-class contender. Something that Lincoln, for example, still isn’t close to.

Holy M-class! Mercedes-Benz Presents Latest Popemobile to His Holiness

Mercedes-Benz has a longstanding relationship with the Vatican, having provided transportation for Popes going back 80 years, and now the company has unveiled its latest holy ride. The new Popemobile, as the Pope’s public-appearance car/rolling display case has come to be known, is again based on Benz’s M-class, but sees a number of Pope-duty-specific upgrades relative to the outgoing model. The one and only Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board at Daimler AG, presented the Pope with his new rolling digs today.

The new M-class Popemobile gets a revised holy, er, fishbowl on the back for Pope Benedict XVI to occupy. More glass area, greater interior illumination, and more standing height top the list of Pope dome tweaks. Benz also lowered the dome’s roof slightly, which it says will make the Popemobile easier to load into airplanes. (The vehicle travels with the Pope pretty much anywhere he goes.) Inside the dome, Benz again fitted a throne—yes, an actual throne—that’s embroidered with the coat of arms of the Holy Father. (And you thought the massaging seats in your S-class were pretty neat.) Mercedes says the new Popemobile could first be pressed into duty tomorrow, at the Catholic Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception.

2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i Tested: Goes Like Stink, Stopping Distance Stinks

It’s been on sale in Europe for three years already, meaning the X1 is not new. And this repackaging of 3-series bits into yet another small crossover doesn’t break any new ground. It does, however, leave us longing for things increasingly missing from the land of the Roundel. Like a manual transmission. Or the sense that this car was conceived to deliver a singular driving experience. READ MORE ››

Investindustrial Commits To Buying Stake In Aston Martin
The Aston Martin DB9 – image: Aston Martin
The future for luxury sports car builder Aston Martin just got a little bit brighter, as European equity fund Investindustrial has committed to buying a 37.5-percent stake in Aston Martin from current owner Investment Dar. The deal is said to be worth some 190 million euros, the equivalent of $246 million.
As Bloomberg reports, Aston Martin hopes Investindustrial can work the same magic as it applied to premium motorcycle brand Ducati. Under Investindustrial’s ownership, Ducati’s new worth grew to the 860 million euros ($1.1 billion) paid by the Volkswagen group last April.
To up Aston Martin’s sales, Investindustrial will focus on growing the model range and shoring up its aging dealer network. Previous owner Investment Dar lacked the funding to contribute to Aston’s growth, so Investindustrial’s cash is badly needed if Aston Martin is to compete against premium brands backed by larger automakers.
This much is clear: something needs to be done, and done quickly, to halt Aston Martin’s plummeting sales. Through September, global sales have dropped by 20-percent compared to 2011, leaving the company with an operating loss of 3.6 million pounds ($5.77 million).

Aston Martin Sells Minority Stake to Italian Investment Group

Aston Martin this morning announced that Investindustrial—the group that recently sold motorcycle manufacturer, Ducati, to Audi—has purchased a 37.5-percent share in the brand. Investindustrial’s minority share came at a cost of roughly $241 million, providing Aston with a cash infusion the sports-car maker says will allow it to embark on “its extensive and exciting plans for sustainable long-term growth.”
Sources in Europe tell Car and Driver that such an influx of capital would allow Aston to grow its product line past the current lineup of the Vantage, the DB9, the Rapide, and the Vanquish. The hope is to broaden the brand’s appeal, and the first step in doing that would be to add an SUV to the lineup—the Lagonda concept that debuted at the Geneva auto show nearly four years ago would be ideal. Not only would the Lagonda broaden the brand’s appeal, it also would provide Aston with a significant boost in sales in markets like Russia and China, where sports cars are slow sellers because of their incompatibility with subpar weather and road conditions.
Investindustrial’s commitment of $241 million won’t result in the Lagonda getting the green light straight away. But this raising of funds is the first step toward Aston’s plan for long-term growth, which will see the brand invest more than $800 million in product and technology programs over the next five years.

Comparison Test: V12 Vantage vs. R8 V10, 458 Italia, SLS AMG, 911 Turbo S
A number of reports this morning suggest that Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance arm, AMG, somehow will end up involved in this deal. The theory goes that Aston is interested in replacing the aging 5.9-liter V-12 that proliferates throughout the brand’s lineup, and AMG’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 would make a fine replacement. Aston tells us that AMG doesn’t fit into this deal in any way, but that the English automaker is free to consult with whoever it likes. Perhaps a better theory than a tie-up with AMG is a warming relationship with Mercedes, whose GL-class provided the platform for the Lagonda concept some years ago.

Porsche Previews Latest 911 GT3 Cup Track Car; We Want One Now!

Porsche hasn’t yet opened the faucet all the way on its latest 911, but rest assured, it will be releasing an unholy number of variants and spinoffs of the sports car soon enough—starting with this track-day special, the new GT3 Cup. (So far only the 911 coupe and cabriolet have debuted in Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, and Carrera 4S guise, but a Turbo, a GTS, and more are all but a sure thing.) Full details on the next GT3 Cup are not yet available, but today Porsche released a video of the new GT3 tearing up a racetrack, set to a stirring soundtrack of flat-six-cylinder exhaust.

Chevrolet Malibu to Get Early Mid-Cycle Makeover

Dan Akerson, CEO of General Motors, recently revealed that engineers already were hard at work on a makeover for the Chevrolet Malibu. In an interview with Automotive News, Akerson stated that the Malibu would receive a “mid-cycle enhancement, not dramatic, by this time next year,” adding that the changes would include the front fascia. Launched just more than 18 months ago, the Malibu’s face lift will arrive somewhat ahead of schedule; most models in the segment go three years or more between makeovers. Akerson also acknowledged the unflattering reviews and said that the refresh is taking place sooner than Chevrolet had been planned. Chevy confirmed both statements to Car and Driver this morning.
Once considered somewhat unusual, early life-cycle vehicle makeovers are now becoming more common. The most recent high-profile example being the 2012 Honda Civic, which debuted in the spring of 2011 to a collective “meh,” from its well-established fan base and critics. Honda wasted no time retreating to the design studio to hone the vehicle, and came back with an impressive effort for 2013.

We found the Malibu to be competent but less than inspiring, missing several of the key details that turn a transportation appliance into a class leader. To his credit, Akerson has a pretty realistic view of the situation: “I think it’s a good car. It’ll do OK. It is a tough segment and it’s one we need to be successful in. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Confirmed: M Version of BMW 4-series Coupe to be Called M4, M3 Name Will Live On

BMW has confirmed that, in about a year and a half, it will produce an M4 version of the 4-series coupe concept the company recently unveiled, and which is pictured here.
But the existence of an M4 does not preclude the existence of an M3, one of the longest-running nameplates from the M boys and the sub-brand’s philosophical heart. And so both M4 and M3 models will be produced. BMW might sometimes be silly, but it is not stupid.

And that is about all BMW will say on the subject. It’s giving no hints to the specifications for M3/M4 models. It’s widely been assumed that the 4.0-liter V-8 will no longer be the engine of choice for the model. Instead, a high-power, turbocharged version of the inline six is expected. Unlike the current M5, where a manual gearbox is offered only in America, we expect the next M3 to offer a conventional six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic in most markets.
