The Continental: A Huge Price Drop on the Z, Fisker’s Plans, and an Eternal Favorite

By Jens Meiners

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

The Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT 86 twins—the latter sold as the Scion FR-S in the U.S.—are shaking up the automotive world. The Toyota is selling from €30,450 in Europe, the Subaru begins at €29,500. Now Nissan is reacting by lowering the price of the slightly facelifted 370Z from €38,750 to €32,900. It might not sound like a big deal, but the Z suddenly is well within reach of those customers looking at the new Subaru/Toyota, and now costs less than the last-gen 350Z did at launch. That older Z retailed for €33,850 when it was introduced in Germany in 2003. Some might call the price cut a move of desperation, but Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan Europe’s general manager for the 370Z, chooses to portray it as an act of altruism: “While other carmakers would likely have used the opportunity to raise prices, Nissan is preserving the character of the 370Z as an affordable sports car and making it available to an even larger circle of customers,” he volunteers.

Volkswagen Cross Caddy

VW’s Crossover Commercial Vehicle

Volkswagen is expanding its lineup of crossovers with a high-riding derivative of the Caddy light commercial vehicle. Called the Cross Caddy, the new crossover comes with a choice of nine engines and available all-wheel drive, which requires either the 110- or 140-hp diesel engine. The Caddy is a nice enough commercial vehicle and a favorite among cost-conscious families. It’s also preferred by traffic police, who use its tinted tailgate windows to hide their radar equipment; this also means it is unloved by professional speeders.

It’s Not the Cars?

Europeans are subjected to constant lectures about the merits of public transportation and how using it is supposedly in the interest of saving the environment. Now the “Deutsche Umwelthilfe,” a questionable, aggressively anti-automobile NGO, is unexpectedly sharing some less-than-rosy truths about public transportation. According to a recent study, 60 percent of communal buses do not have an effective particulate filter and only 14 percent are equipped with a NOX catalyser. The bus operators, often public corporations, cite high costs as reason for the tardiness in upgrading their fleet. Oh, really? Car owners certainly feel their pain.

Fisker Atlantic

What Fisker’s New owners Might Get

I recently spent some time with Fisker co-founder Berthold Koehler and the now departed founder Henrik Fisker. They revealed a few new details regarding the Atlantic mid-size sedan and announced at least two further models down the road. The Atlantic is supposed to command roughly half of the flagship Karma‘s price, amounting to around $50,000–$60,000. Like its big brother, the Atlantic is intended to be an electric car with a range-extending …read more

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo Convertible Tested: Forced Air for Both Driver and Engine

By Alexander Stoklosa

2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible turbo

Right or wrong, this review of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible became a referendum on its dude-friendliness. But that’s partially VW’s fault, for insisting it had broadened the appeal of the Beetle when it introduced the latest coupe roughly two years ago. We agree that the new car is more aggressive, even if some might see it as spiking a 55-gallon drum of Hi-C with a shooter bottle of Absolut. But does the soft top of the recently introduced and redesigned cabrio negate the additional machismo? We armed ourselves with a sporty Turbo cabriolet to give the Bug its best shot.  READ MORE ››

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

2013 VW Beetle Convertible Beauty Right HAW Done Small

There’s just something about the new VW Beetle convertible that evokes instant response from people who come into contact with the all-new convertible model in the Beetle lineup.  When parked I had youngsters, teenagers, seniors, all bug-eyed over the new car.  It just sparks positive comments.  It’s really not cute, it’s a Beetle!  It’s the third-generation of the iconic VW ragtop and like its predecessors-the type 15 from 1949, and the 2003 Beetle convertible-the curvaceous styled convertible offers the perfect combination of sun-on-your-face and wind-in-your-hair fun for four persons.

2013 VW Beetle Convertible Beauty Right LA Up Done Small

The styling of the new Beetle convertible harkens back to the original 1949 ragtop rather than the 1998 new Beetle.  It respects the past but looks forward to the future.  The new Beetle convertible breaks free of the design geometry defined by three semi-circles-front fender, rear fender and domed roof above it.  The roof profile actually runs distinctly lower and can be considered a development of the Ragster concept car shown in Detroit in 2005.  The new model is bolder and more masculine.  It is characterized by a clean and dominant sportiness feeling.  The car is not only lower in profile, it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper rake.  Up front is a squared-off jaw bumper, oval halogen headlamp clusters with a lower black contracting wide air-intake and LED daytime running lights at each end.   At the side are pronounced flared fenders, pull-out door handles, heated/power-remote sideview mirrors, a full-perimeter chrome strip and another chrome strip under the doors giving it off a luxury touch.  The rear features angular LED lamp clusters, a round bumper, the VW badge that flip up to open the trunk, dual exhaust tips gathered together under the left side of the bumper, while up top is a wide spoiler to help increase downforce at highway speeds.  Volkswagen decided to stick with a traditional soft-top rather than incorporate a folding hardtop as seen on the VW EOS.  When the top is down, it lays flat, giving good rear visibility.  Although the top looks compact when furled, it’s actually wide and long when in place, an action that takes a little over 10 seconds at the touch of a button.  The soft-top outer shell itself is made from three layers: an outer one of polyacrylic women fabric, a middle layer of synthetic rubber, and an inner lining of polyester.  Underneath, there’s a three-layer design for the insulation, made from polyester nonwoven fabric, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) insulating fleece, and polyester spunboard.  The headliner is made from a foam-laminated fabric resulting in a snug top that yields remarkably low levels of wind noise.  Top options include a boot and a noise blocker that fits just behind the front passenger seats.

What Does a Car Recall in China Mean for VW?

By 24/7 Wall St.

108680884

Filed under:

Volkswagen has recalled 384,181 cars in China, including Golf, Magotan, Sagitar and Audi A3 models. Bloomberg reports that the cost of this action to VW will be more than $600 million. The more important issue is whether recalls in China harm car manufacturer reputations as much as they can in more established markets like the United States. If so, VW has a problem much larger than a financial one.

Volkswagen and General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) have held on as the top car makers in China by sales. Those positions are under assault by other large multinational manufacturers, particularly Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) and Nissan. The strength and breadth of this competition may allow the newcomers to rattle VW sales, if each company can trumpet its quality compared to VW. That only works until one or more of these car companies has a product recall of its own.

The likelihood of product recalls in any market and of any model may be what helps VW in China in the long term. For now, the recall of nearly 400,000 vehicles is unmistakably a blow to the German company. But the moment GM or Toyota have recall problems, VW‘s will be pushed further back in the memories of buyers.

The slew of other large companies that sell cars in China, which has been swelled by local firms as well as those from outside the People’s Republic, will have recalls. Based on the past four decades of recalls in the United States, every manufacturer will be hit eventually. The probable quality problems with all of these means VW‘s recall will be all but forgotten fairly soon.

Europe Car Sales Spell Doom for GM

By 24/7 Wall St.

ChevyLogo

New car sales research from Europe shows that General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) fortunes in the region have gotten much worse. Its decade-old string of losses is guaranteed to continue. Whatever car analysts believed in the past (and many believed GM‘s efforts in the region have been shattered for some time), the largest U.S. car company has reached the point where it is impossible to recover.

The February data for Europe car sales show a drop of 10.5%, compared with the same period a year ago. This is the lowest level since the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) began to keep figures. February sales of cars and light trucks in the European Union dropped to 795,482.

GM‘s numbers were much worse when put against the regional average, which means it also has fallen further behind the market leaders. GM‘s total sales dropped 20.6% year-over-year to 57,410 in February. Its market share dropped from 8.1% to 7.2% for the same period.

The major nemesis to all manufacturers that do business in Europe is Volkswagen — not only the largest company in the region by sales, but one that continues to gain market share. VW‘s sales dropped 7.4% in February over the same month a year ago to 195,608, but its market share rose from 23.8% to 24.6%. VW remains more dominant in its home market than GM is in the United States.

A number of other modest-sized companies in the market also outpaced GM. Among these were BMW, which has 5.8% of the market, Daimler, which has 5.3%, Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM), which has 4.1%, and Hyundai, which has 3.9%. All of these are above their market share in February 2012. The Asia manufacturers have successfully pushed into the market, while the local luxury car companies continue to add to their edges.

In Europe, GM is boxed in among a larger competitor, Asian firms and the luxury end of the market. There is no reason to believe that these trends will end.

If GM was at a tipping point in Europe, as management tries to turn the operation around, that operation is now officially doomed.

2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Long-Term Test: Halfway Through the 40,000-Mile Gauntlet

By K.C. Colwell

2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Haters of the “people’s car” are always quick to point out Volkswagen’s less-than-sterling reputation for reliability. What the Corolla-loving cranks always overlook is that a VW, even the lowest and cheapest version queued up at a Düsseldorf taxi stand, is engineered for the autobahn. Which is to say, it can sustain 100-plus-mph travel. Perhaps over-engineered for American roads, VWs have acoustic damping more than adequate for 75 mph and an overall sense of high-velocity refinement. The brand’s loyalists know that there’s more than one way to measure quality. READ MORE ››

Volkswagen's Wild China Dreams

By 24/7 Wall St.

China

Filed under:

Volkswagen believes it can see the future of the car industry in China and its own place in that future. The German manufacturer will increase its production capacity in the People’s Republic by as much as 70% by 2018. Of course, VW could be completely wrong about the future of the market, which would make its programs a very costly mistake.

Volkswagen announced its China plans as management reported record global profits for 2012. The company knows as well as any other that its home market of Europe will stay depressed for several years. That leaves its initiatives in the United States and China as the critical lynch pins of its future fortunes.

VW‘s presence in the U.S. is small and probably will not get much bigger. It sold 60,474 units in the market over the first two months of the year, for a modest 4.7% increase. Its market share in the United States is only 2.7%.

VW has to contend with two issues in the U.S. First is that its cars are rarely among those considered the best by testing companies. Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM), which has products that compete with all of those sold by Volkswagen, does much better in these evaluations. So do Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) products and those of several products of The Big Three U.S. automakers. Second, VW‘s products are aimed at the middle of the market, which favors light cars with good gas mileage. This part of the market is ridiculously crowded, and much of the crowd has been in this part of the American market for years.

That leaves VW‘s gamble in China. The Chinese car market is the world’s largest, but it is not posting the hyper-growth of the past decade. An end to some tax credits has hurt sales. What is less clear is whether other factors have slowed sales. Do the Chinese have less discretionary income than most analysts believe? Or is the Chinese market really different from those in the U.S. and Europe? The bicycle, scooters and public transportation may have roots there too deep for VW to disturb.

VW has to contend with the crowding of the market in China just as it does in the United States. Its China position is extremely strong, often considered number one in the People’s Republic for total sales, a distinction it sometimes shares with GM. But every other global car company believes it needs China to have a bright future, and China‘s own car companies want sales and market share just as badly.

The Chinese market may not be as fertile as expected for another reason. The extreme levels of air pollution in the most populous cities already have triggered restrictions to the number of cars that may be driven and the time of day they can operation. This is bound to undermine the sales of cars and light trucks. As the pollution gets worse, so will the restrictions.

New Volkswagen E-Up! debuts with 93-mile range, Combined Charging System

By Sebastian Blanco

Production Volkswagen E-Up! - front three-quarter studio shot

Filed under:

Excited as always, the new E-Up! from Volkswagen is making its debut today at the Annual Press and Investors Conference in VW‘s home town of Wolfsburg, Germany. But wait, you’re saying, we first saw the E-Up! at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, so what’s this “debut” that VW is talking about?

Well, this is the “first fully electric production vehicle,” and there are some differences from the 2009 version in style (see the front fascia and wheels, for example) and substance (the earlier concept had a 3+1 seating arrangement, which this one is a more standard, if tiny, four-seater).

This new all-electric E-Up! has a 18.7-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers a range of 150 kilometers (93 miles, on the NEDC test) and has quick charging to get 80 percent of its charge back in 30 minutes. The port is VW‘s Combined Charging System (CCS) that supports DC and AC charging. With an electric motor offering 60 kW of peak power, the sprint from zero to 62 mph takes a lengthy 14 seconds, but once on the go, the top speed is 84 mph.

In 2010, there were reports that the E-Up! would someday be available in the US. Today’s announcement doesn’t say anything about North America, it just confirms that the new E-Up! will be shown at the Frankfurt show later this year, with orders opening up after the show. Want to know more about VW‘s growing Up! franchise? Read our review of the gas-powered model here. Not green enough? VW also offers the Eco Up!, which can burn natural gas for roughly 56 US miles per gallon.

This Could Crush GM's China Chances

By John Rosevear, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

As the PR minions at General Motors are fond of pointing out, GM currently holds the leading position (by market share) of the two largest automotive markets, China and the U.S.

GM‘s lead in the U.S. is probably safe, at least for now. But in China, GM is at risk of falling behind the company that is fast becoming its most dangerous global rival: Volkswagen .

VW is making a big move in China
Despite gains by Toyota and Ford , GM‘s No. 1 position in the U.S. doesn’t seem likely to be under serious threat any time soon. While the General has lost some market share since its 2009 bankruptcy, it has a slew of new products due over the next couple of years. If they’re well-executed – and signs so far are mostly goodGM should be able to put some extra daylight between itself and its key rivals.

But the story is different in China. While Toyota is falling far behind the General, and Ford is still playing catch-up, GM arch-rival Volkswagen is investing big – and could blow right by GM before too long. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said on Thursday that the company plans to build at least seven new factories in China over the next few years, as it aims to increase its China production 60% by 2018.

China, where VW has carved out a significant presence and sells nearly as many vehicles as GM, is a hugely important market for Germany‘s largest automaker. As VW (like most of its regional rivals) continues to struggle with the deep recessions that have crushed new-car sales in Europe, where it is the market leader, it’s increasingly looking to China – as well as North America – to drive growth in coming years.

Big profits for the German giant
That growth has been happening. VW earned 11.5 billion euros, or about $14.9 billion, before interest and taxes in 2012, a number that dwarfs the $7.9 billion posted by GM for the year – and the numbers posted by most other global automakers. Simply put, VW‘s innovative manufacturing model has led to strong margins – margins that could strengthen further as it continues to implement its approach around the world. Already, VW has posted three solid years of profit growth – and despite a worsening climate in Europe, it expects to post similar profit totals in 2013.

China has been a big contributor to VW‘s growth in the last few years, helping to offset sales declines and pressure on margins in Europe. The company made 3.7 billion euros in China in 2012 (about $4.8 billion), a 42% increase over year-ago numbers. Again, the contrast with GM is stark: GM‘s international operations unit earned just $2.2 billion last year – much (but not all) of that from China.

Why the huge gap, given that GM sold (slightly) more vehicles in China than VW did …read more

2013 VW Passat “Toss” Commercial: This Pitch Strikes Out [The Ad Section]

By Don Klein

vw passat toss

Award-winning ad man-cum-auto journalist Don Klein knows a good (or bad) car commercial when he sees one; the Ad Section is his space to tell you what he thinks of the latest spots. The ad’s rating is depicted via the shift pattern at the bottom, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to advertising, so hit Backfires below and tell us what you think, too.

In 1959, Volkswagen ran a print ad with a photo of a Beetle and the tagline, “Think Small.” Its simplicity and compelling logic made it a watershed event that changed not only the face of car advertising, but advertising in general. It received so much attention that it put both VW and its agency (Doyle Dane Bernbach) on the map as the standard bearers of advertising creative excellence. In the ensuing 50-plus years, VW has continued to give us many memorable breakthrough ads, culminating in 2011’s wonderful “Force” commercial, which featured a mini Darth Vader having a close encounter with his father’s Passat.

Two years later, you can still find that spot at the top of almost every “Best Commercials Ever” list because it deserves to be. So I find it surprising that VW decided to make a new father-son Passat commercial. Did it really think it could outdo “Force” with this boring portrayal of an inept father teaching his son how to throw a baseball? And given the legacy and challenge of maintaining VW’s high creative standards, this is the best it could do to communicate the Passat’s durability?

The storyline is appealing enough—despite their mutual lack of athletic ability, a young dad encourages his son to improve his ball-tossing skills by trying to show him how it’s done. If more fathers invested this type of interest in their kids, the world would be a better place. Ironically, except for the fact that they’re trying to sell you a car, the payoff line is admirable: “Pass down something he will be grateful for.” If that “something” referred to the life lesson this supportive father is demonstrating, I’d say it’s a great spot. But instead, the creative team uses it as a straw dog to set up the commercial’s real message: Your kid won’t appreciate your teaching him to throw like a dork, but you can make up for it by giving him your hand-me-down Passat when he gets old enough to drive.

Junior looks to be somewhere between eight and ten years old, so depending on where they live, this baton-passing should take place in the next six to eight years. Will the now-new Passat still be roadworthy by then? Hard to say—all it does in the commercial is sit in the driveway. It doesn’t even deflect one of the kid’s off-target tosses. Although durability is ostensibly the point of the commercial, the only evidence it gives …read more

Geneva: 2013 Škoda Octavia hits Geneva in sedan and wagon trims [w/video]

By Seyth Miersma

Volkswagen’s Czech brand Škoda had a big show here in Geneva, even if most North American car buyers would never know it. Škoda brought its newly introduced Octavia model to the show this year, in both sedan and wagon (“combi”) formulations.

The Škoda business model in Europe is roughly analogous to that of Kia in North America; offer brand-neutral buyers a lot of content for a value price. To that end, the 2013 Octavia brings a lot of VW group technology to the table: emergency brake assist, lane keep assist and fatigue detection in terms of safety, and navigation, a touch screen and premium sound for those seeking luxury.

Four TDI diesel engines are available for customers to choose from, while a 1.8-liter, 177-horsepower TSI gasoline engine sits at the top of the petrol range.

And, while Škoda actually announced the Octavia sedan a few weeks ago (Geneva was just its formal coming out party), the brand also brought a heretofore unseen wagon version, the Octavia Combi, to Switzerland, too. We think that the sedan and the wagon are pretty understated and handsome, truth be told, but the higher, more capacious Combi looks a bit neater to our eyes. (That is, when our eyes stray from the girl-next-door models surrounding the Octavia sedan.)

Please continue on for both Škoda’a official press release, and a video of the 2013 Octavia. Naturally you’ll find scads of images of both Octavia variants in our attached galleries, as well.

Geneva: Volkswagen Cross Up! aimed at rugged lifestyle folks, complete with plastic cladding

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Volkswagen Cross Up! revealed at 2013 Geneva Motor Show - front three-quarter view, red

Filed under:

If you thought there was nothing wrong with the Volkswagen Up! that a little body cladding wouldn’t fix, you’re in luck. VW has officially pulled the wraps off the production version of the Cross Up!, and its wheel arches and rocker panels are full of the black plastic cladding you’ve been yearning for.

In addition to the “particularly rugged design and tough, lifestyle qualities” that the cladding exudes, VeeDub has also seen fit to put its Cross Up! on a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels clad in 185/50-series tires. Inside, there are new kick plates to go along with a dash pad that can be had in red, black or silver.

All that cladding must equal additional off-road readiness, right? Well, sure… just so long as you’re fine with the same 75-horsepower three-cylinder engine that all other Up! models also feature, along with a five-speed manual transmission sending power to the front wheels, again, just like all other Up! models. The Cross Up! appears to have a taller ride height than other models, but we haven’t been able to find out what – if any – changes have been made.

Sales begin in mainland Europe this summer, and the car may make it to the UK at some point. Don’t expect to see the machine traversing the Rubicon Trail here in the States, though. And with that, we hope you’ll join us in the rugged outdoor confines of your local mall’s parking garage. But first, scroll down below for the official press release.

Geneva: Volkswagen Golf Variant Concept R-Line puts the sport in SportWagen

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Volkswagen Golf Variant Concept R-Line

Filed under:

With the introduction of the newest Volkswagen Golf Variant, we get an early look at what will most likely be the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here in the US. To further wet our appetities, VW is now teasing something a little sportier with the Concept R-Line. Looking the part of a GTI wagon (or a stretched Golf R), the Golf Variant Concept R-Line has a production-ready appearance that has us hoping we’ll see this sporty wagon sooner rather than later.

The R-Line starts off with a new fascia that isn’t quite as aggressive as the recently introduced GTI, but it gives the new styling some extra punch. Below the fascia is a lower splitter that visually carries back into the rocker panel extensions, and the rear of the car gets some bright exhaust tips and a rear diffuser. The Lapis Blue Metallic paint job probably does enough on its own to add a sporty flair to the Golf wagon, and it’s all finished off with 18-inch split-spoke wheels. Inside, the Concept R-Line shows off sport seats wrapped in carbon leather featuring blue nappa inserts in the middle.

Rightfully so, VW brought the Concept R-Line to Geneva with its TDI and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. A sporty, all-wheel-drive diesel wagon? Yes, please. Scroll down for the full press blast with all the details.

Geneva: Seat Leon SC is the Golf cousin we're dying to <i>hola</i> at

By Seyth Miersma

2013 Seat Leon SC

Filed under:

Despite Volkswagen bringing both GTI and Variant wagon versions of its new Golf to Geneva this year, some would argue that the best looking Golf on the show floor is wearing a Seat badge. The Spanish Volkswagen subsidiary has unveiled its three-door Leon SC for the Swiss crowds, and the car’s neatly creased hatchback form is, at least, a pleasant visual alternative to the slope-nosed VW.

The technical details about the Seat Leon have been available for a little while now (we’ve reported on both the five-door and the three-door cars already), but it’s good to see the thing in the metal and with live images. To refresh: the Leon will offer a full complement of diesel and direct-injection gasoline engines, both manual and DSG transmissions, and a whole host of technology from the VW corporate toy box.

Scroll down for a host of details in the Seat press release, and get a closer look at the real deal automobile in our gallery of live-from-Geneva images.

Toyota's Opportunity: An Update

By John Rosevear, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Toyota isn’t just one of the world’s most respected auto brands; it’s one of the world’s strongest brands of any kind. Japan‘s largest automaker has become the industry’s reference point for automotive product quality and manufacturing efficiency, and many of the methods it pioneered have since become industry standards.

General Motors and Ford turned around moribund manufacturing operations by emulating, and then building on, Toyota’s vaunted approaches. But for all of its strength, Toyota has faced a sea of troubles in recent years: A massive tsunami in northern Japan decimated its supplier network and left some of its assembly lines idled for months, and global recall scandals have dented its reputation for quality and integrity.

But for all that, Toyota’s resiliency has been impressive. The Japanese giant shrugged off its crises as if they were mere potholes and regained the global auto sales crown in 2012.

But is Toyota a buy? That’s a more complicated question. To help answer it, last fall I created a premium research report to help investors understand the challenges facing Toyota, and the opportunities presented by the company.

That report has just been updated. What follows is an excerpt from the latest edition. We hope you enjoy it.

Toyota is immensely strong, but challenges persist
In the U.S., as in most of the world, Toyota’s value propositions are quality and efficiency. Its cars may not be the most exciting, but they are safe choices — likely to last a long time, with minimal maintenance, while delivering good fuel economy. While the sudden-acceleration recall fiasco of 2010 seemed to dent Toyota’s reputation for a time, those impacts largely seem to have faded — helped by Consumer Reports surveys that once again rate Toyotas at the top of the heap for quality. A recent study by Experian found that Toyota had regained the top spot in Corporate Loyalty for the first time since the third quarter of 2009.

That story, with variations, replays itself over and over around the world. In countries from Indonesia, where Toyota’s Avanza is the runaway best-seller, to South Africa, where three of the top five sellers are Toyotas, Toyota’s simple value proposition continues to find plenty of customers.

One exception to that rule has been Europe, where Toyota’s presence is minimal. In recent years, that has worked to the Japanese giant’s advantage, as market leaders VW, Ford, and GM all confront a recession-ravaged auto market that has led to significant losses. Toyota’s decision to largely steer clear of Europe increasingly looks like a smart one, as GM and Ford have both struggled to contain losses running in the hundreds of millions of dollars every quarter.

It’s a good story. But on the other hand, CEO Akio Toyoda and his team still have major challenges to confront.

The company announced a massive global recall of over 7 million vehicles in October of 2012, including 2.5 million …read more

So far so good for General Motors in China in 2013: GM announced on Tuesday that its sales in the first two months of the year were up 7.9%.

That’s a respectable gain that comes even as key Japanese rivals like Toyota have reported declines, suggesting that GM, powered by solid results for its Buick and Chevrolet brands, could be gaining ground in the world’s largest auto market.

GM gains ground as Japanese rivals struggle
Not so long ago, the big Japanese automakers seemed poised for success in China, but nationalist feelings sparked by a territorial dispute between China and Japan last year led to sharp declines in sales for Toyota, Honda , and Nissan .

Toyota’s 2013 sales through February were down 13.3% from year-ago totals, suggesting that the Japanese giant – the leader in global sales in 2012 – still has work to do to repair its reputation in China. Honda and Nissan saw 4.1% and 14.1% declines over the same period, respectively.

Automakers doing business in China prefer to report January and February sales as a single combined total because of China‘s week-long New Year‘s celebrations, which sometimes fall in January and sometimes in February. Strictly speaking, nearly all automakers saw big increases in January and year-over-year declines in February this year – because those celebrations fell in February in 2013 and in January in 2012.

Meanwhile, General Motors, and in particular its Shanghai GM joint venture, which sells Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac models, has continued its steady growth trajectory so far in 2013.

Continued progress for GM’s key brands
Shanghai GM‘s sales were up 12.4% to 255,243 units in the first two months of 2013, a good gain and a record for the period. Highlights included strong sales for the upscale compact Buick Excelle XT hatchback and GT sedan, which saw sales rise more than 20% in February despite the holiday week. The Excelle GT and XT, China-only models that are closely related to the Buick Verano compact sold here in the U.S., have been consistently strong sellers for GM since their introduction in 2010.

Sales of the Chevrolet Malibu more than doubled in February, GM said, and the brand also saw a 22% gain for its Sail in February. The Sail, the first Chevy designed in and built specifically for the Chinese market, is an entry-level subcompact car that has been one of China‘s best-sellers since its introduction in 2010.

Cadillac sales were up on strong results for the SRX crossover, which is GM‘s key representative in the premium-SUV niche that has been one of China‘s hottest automotive segments in recent months. Cadillac’s overall China volumes are still tiny, especially in comparison with those of GM arch-rival Volkswagen‘s white-hot Audi brand. Increasingly, there are hints that GM has an ambitious long-range plan for Cadillac in China (and elsewhere), but such a plan is expected to take several years to implement.

Meanwhile, while VW hadn’t posted its February sales results …read more

Turbocharged Kia Pro_Cee’d and Cee’d GT Take Aim at GTI—In Europe [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

2013 Geneva auto show full coverage

Kia has pulled the wraps off of high-performance, turbocharged GT iterations of its European-market Cee’d five-door and Pro_cee’d three-door hatchbacks, and the pair appear to take direct aim at Volkswagen’s current GTI. We already knew Kia was working on the GT models, but the cars are making their in-the-metal debuts at the 2013 Geneva auto show.

Kia’s GT treatment largely centers around a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out a GTI-baiting 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are close to the European GTI’s 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft—despite the Kia engine displacing 0.4 fewer liters than VW’s 2.0-liter. A six-speed manual handles shifting duties. Kia claims that both the Pro_cee’d GT and Cee’d GT can run from 0 to 62 mph in a conservative-sounding 7.7 seconds, and that top speed for both is a lofty 143 mph. The cars’ suspension upgrades aren’t specifically outlined, with Kia saying only that the setups were worked over to match the higher-performance engine.

Aggressive visual upgrades back up the go-faster hardware. The three-door Pro_cee’d GT appears slightly sportier than its more-practical five-door sibling, but both get unique front and rear fascias with large intakes and neat-looking square nacelles. Up front, the nacelles each pack a quadrant of LED running lights. Dual exhaust outlets poke out of the rear ends of both GTs, and handsome 18-inch wheels and red-painted brake calipers serve as eye candy.

The GTs’ interiors are just as businesslike as their exteriors, gaining Recaro sport seats, aluminum pedals, and a seven-inch TFT digital gauge cluster. For Kia hot-hatch fanatics—do those exist yet?—there will be a special launch-celebrating pro_cee’d GT 1st Edition. Just 500 examples will be built for all of Europe, and each one will include adaptive xenon headlights, automatic climate control, navigation, and a sunroof. Visually, they’ll be set apart from regular GTs by black wheels and door mirrors, stainless steel sill plates with backlit “GT” lettering, red ambient lighting, velour floor mats with red stitching, and a number plate. Here’s hoping Kia decides to give the GT treatment to the Forte and Forte five-door we get here.

Italdesign Giugiaro Parcour Concept: One Coupe / Crossover / Sports Car / Off-Roader to Rule Them All [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

Italdesign Giugaro Parkour concept

Alongside the other wares rolled out by Volkswagen Group at the 2013 Geneva auto show, VW-owned Italdesign Giugiaro debuted this wondrously off-kilter design concept in both coupe and roadster forms. Fittingly, Italdesign went with the name Parcour for its low-slung/high-riding oddity. A cute misspelling of parkour, the “urban sport” in which people move unconventionally over public infrastructure, the Parcour is designed to tackle all terrains with equal aplomb. READ MORE ››

Geneva: ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour is a rough-and-tumble Lamborghini Gallardo

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour

The Volkswagen Group had one final trick up its sleeve to unveil at the Geneva Motor Show, a daring concept car from ItalDesign Giugiaro called the Parcour. We’re thinking this one is going to be controversial, but that’s fine by us – a little conceptual shake-up never hurt anybody.

From what we can tell, the Parcour is a rough-road-ready take on the Lamborghini Gallardo, with a mid-mounted 5.2-liter V10 engine sending 550 horsepower to all four wheels. The version shown at VW‘s pre-show event is a hardtop coupe, but the design house has also created a roadster that you can see in the gallery below.

According to ItalDesign Giugiaro, the Parcour weighs in at around 3,400 pounds is capable of a 0 to 62 run of 3.6 seconds and it boasts a top speed of around 200 miles per hour. Ride height is adjustable from the cabin, ranging from 8.2 inches all the way up to 13 inches. A kind of terrain dial can be used inside with settings for Comfort, Off-Road, Ice and Track modes.

We don’t entirely understand the suspension system, but the company says it uses a pushrod arrangement, minus the pushrods, which have been replaced by a second set of shocks. That means there are eight shocks in total, two at each corner. In Track mode, which lowers the car as far as possible, just four of the shocks are used.

Inside, the Parcour features a Plexiglass central dashboard with touch controls. The seven-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission offers Auto and Sport modes. Check out the complete press release below for all the details, and be sure to peruse both our live image gallery above and the stock shots below.
