Official: 2014 Kia Cadenza goes on sale this month priced from $35,100*

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Kia’s sedan lineup is about to get much more luxurious with the addition of the new Cadenza and range-topping Quoris models, but the Amanti-replacing 2014 Cadenza will be the first to hit dealers this month with a starting price of $35,100 (*not including $800 for destination). For those keeping record, that’s more expensive than Hyundai’s version of this car, the Azera, and about $1,000 more than the Genesis, but it sounds like the new front-wheel-drive Kia will be getting a few more advanced features than its Hyundai counterpart.

In base form, the Cadenza comes standard with leather seating, navigation and a premium Infinity 12-speaker audio system, and the $3,000 Luxury Package adds nappa leather seats with a ventilated driver’s seat, a seven-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) display, heated rear seats, power tilt and telescoping steering column, adaptive HID headlights and a panoramic sunroof. On models already equipped with the Luxury Package, buyers can also add on the Technology Package, which includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning and hydrophobic glass on the front doors – previously, Kia stated that the Cadenza would be getting this water-repelling technology on the windshield, but this press release specifies that it will be applied to the front side windows. And if these two packages aren’t enough luxury for you, Kia’s cherry on top is a no-cost White Package that adds white nappa leather seats, woodgrain trim and a premium headliner.

All in, the 2014 Cadenza will run $41,100 with every option box checked, so we can only imagine how much the Qurois is going to cost when it makes its debut. Scroll down for the press release detailing the pricing for the new Cadenza.

KYOCERA Announces Enhanced, Unified Display Division

New Business Unit Integrates Kyocera Display America, Inc. Into Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation’s LCD Division

PLYMOUTH, Mich.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation (KICC), today introduced Kyocera Display Division, a new business unit combining the strengths of Kyocera Display America, Inc. (the former Optrex America, Inc.) and Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation’s (KICC) LCD Division.

The merger results from global parent Kyocera Corporation‘s previously announced intent to transfer its LCD-related business operations to Kyocera Display Corporation (KYD) in Japan and consolidate KYD‘s regional sales subsidiaries into other local Kyocera Group subsidiaries. As a result, Kyocera Display America, Inc. merged into KICC effective April 1, 2013, creating the new Kyocera Display Division within KICC.

This integration optimizes the strengths of both organizations and will facilitate the expansion of Kyocera’s North American liquid crystal display and touch-panel businesses. The combined enterprise will streamline operations for greater efficiency while positioning Kyocera for continued success. Customers will benefit from a unified sales force offering superior customer service and a broad line of display products and solutions for the automotive, industrial, medical and consumer markets.

The new Display Division carries a 36-year history of LCD expertise in key industrial and automotive markets. Kyocera offers long-term product availability, which distinguishes the company as a preferred and reliable supplier for industrial, automotive and medical applications.

Kyocera’s products include high-performance, cost-effective TFT and passive display solutions. As a leading manufacturer of LCD products, Kyocera is known for its advanced technology and high quality. Kyocera produces state-of-the-art low temperature polysilicon and amorphous silicon panels of various sizes suitable for automotive and industrial use and provides flexibility to support mid- to high-volume production runs.

Kyocera displays are developed using the latest high-efficiency, long lifetime LED backlighting solutions in both standard and high brightness (1200 nit) versions to ensure readability for both indoor and outdoor use. Other features include touch-screen options, built-in LED driver control, advanced super-wide-view technology to deliver true color and wide viewing angles and a wide operational temperature range to support the extreme environments of automotive and industrial applications.

With its strong engineering team, the Display Division provides technical support and guidance from the early design to production phases of product development, offering various technical solutions to customers, including toolkits, touch-screen lamination and assembly services through its sub-contract assembly production facilities in Plymouth, Michigan and Tijuana, Mexico.

2014 Dodge Durango leaks ahead of NY rollout

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2014 Dodge Durango R/T - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Even though Chrysler will reportedly discontinue the Dodge Durango after the current model’s lifespan – said to be around 2016 – that isn’t stopping the automaker from improving its full-size, three-row SUV. The vehicle won’t debut at the New York Auto Show until tomorrow, but images are already leaking out ahead of the embargo lift, and they show that the 2014 model is getting even more aggressive styling to go with more technology inside and out.

Dodge limited its early press shots of the new Durango to just the R/T trim level, but this new look adds a meaner look to this model with more dramatic projector-beam headlights along with a “floating” crosshair grille and a restyled fascia. At the rear of the Durango, LED racetrack taillights show a family resemblance to the Charger and Dart, while a new rear fascia adds to the styling while also allowing for an integrated trailer hitch.

On the tech side, the instrument panel looks to have been redesigned to include a standard seven-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) gauge cluster, and it also appears as if Chrysler’s well-liked UConnect system has been updated with the 8.4-inch touchscreen found in other Chrysler vehicles. The 2013 model’s conventional console shifter has been replaced by a rotary knob for gear selection, suggesting that there are transmission changes afoot as well. We’ll have more details when the silks slide off this big boy tomorrow, so stay tuned.

New York: 2014 Kia Optima is better by a nose

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Kia Optima - refreshed and on the road, white three-quarter view

Filed under:

Kia is showing off a slew of vehicles here in New York, including the ever-so-slightly refreshed 2014 Optima sedan you see here. The brunt of the changes surround the new front fascia, with repositioned LED lighting above the headlamp units and some new quad-LED fogs rounding of a touched-up front bumper. At the rear, Kia has reworked the taillamps, and of course, LEDs are found there, as well.

Other changes to the Optima for 2014 include the additions of two new displays inside the cabin – a 4.3-inch TFT display in the gauge cluster and a larger, eight-inch high-resolution screen that houses the navigation and infotainment data. There are also new seats inside the Optima, which are hopefully more comfortable and offer better bolstering than the decidedly flat chairs found in the current car, plus Kia has added available new safety features like blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert.

The powertrain offerings have not changed for 2014 – base cars still get a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine while the SX models get the 2.0-liter turbo. There is, however, a new Drive Mode Select system specifically for the SX, which adjusts transmission shift points and steering weight for a more engaging dynamic, or so we’re told. (The Optima Hybrid model did receive upgrades to its battery and electric motor just recently, but those changes technically hit during the 2013 model year – it is not immediately clear if the gas-electric model will receive the updates shown here).

We’ll have plenty more images of the refreshed Optima in short order, so stay tuned. In the meantime, have a look below for Kia’s press blast.

Geneva: Kia Cee'd GT and Pro_cee'd GT are Korean for "hot hatch" [w/video]

By Zach Bowman

2013 Kia Pro_cee'd GT - Front three-quarter view, Geneva Motor Show premiere

Filed under:

Kia has pulled back the curtain on its sportiest offerings to date at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The Cee’d GT and Pro_cee’d GT benefit from a direct-injection, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine good for 204 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers are up 51 percent and 61 percent over the models’ base engine, respectively. A six-speed manual transmission puts power to the front wheels, and Kia says the hatches can spring to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. Top speed for both sits at 143 miles per hour. Penned by design guru Peter Schreyer, the cars wear tweaked front fascias complete with new grilles, headlamps and fog lamps.

Out back, dual-exit exhaust separate GT models from their common kin, and 18-inch alloy wheels are standard equipment. Indoors, buyers can expect to find a set of Recaro sport buckets and a specially designed TFT instrument cluster. Take a peek at a brief video of the Pro_cee’d GT and the official press release below.

Turbocharged Kia Pro_Cee’d and Cee’d GT Take Aim at GTI—In Europe [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

2013 Geneva auto show full coverage

Kia has pulled the wraps off of high-performance, turbocharged GT iterations of its European-market Cee’d five-door and Pro_cee’d three-door hatchbacks, and the pair appear to take direct aim at Volkswagen’s current GTI. We already knew Kia was working on the GT models, but the cars are making their in-the-metal debuts at the 2013 Geneva auto show.

Kia’s GT treatment largely centers around a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out a GTI-baiting 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are close to the European GTI’s 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft—despite the Kia engine displacing 0.4 fewer liters than VW’s 2.0-liter. A six-speed manual handles shifting duties. Kia claims that both the Pro_cee’d GT and Cee’d GT can run from 0 to 62 mph in a conservative-sounding 7.7 seconds, and that top speed for both is a lofty 143 mph. The cars’ suspension upgrades aren’t specifically outlined, with Kia saying only that the setups were worked over to match the higher-performance engine.

Kia pro_cee'd GT

Aggressive visual upgrades back up the go-faster hardware. The three-door Pro_cee’d GT appears slightly sportier than its more-practical five-door sibling, but both get unique front and rear fascias with large intakes and neat-looking square nacelles. Up front, the nacelles each pack a quadrant of LED running lights. Dual exhaust outlets poke out of the rear ends of both GTs, and handsome 18-inch wheels and red-painted brake calipers serve as eye candy.

Kia pro_cee'd GT

The GTs’ interiors are just as businesslike as their exteriors, gaining Recaro sport seats, aluminum pedals, and a seven-inch TFT digital gauge cluster. For Kia hot-hatch fanatics—do those exist yet?—there will be a special launch-celebrating pro_cee’d GT 1st Edition. Just 500 examples will be built for all of Europe, and each one will include adaptive xenon headlights, automatic climate control, navigation, and a sunroof. Visually, they’ll be set apart from regular GTs by black wheels and door mirrors, stainless steel sill plates with backlit “GT” lettering, red ambient lighting, velour floor mats with red stitching, and a number plate. Here’s hoping Kia decides to give the GT treatment to the Forte and Forte five-door we get here.

Official: Facelifted Hyundai ix35/Tucson shows up [UPDATE]

By Seyth Miersma

Updated 2014 Hyundai ix35/Tucson - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

It looks as though Hyundai has readied a facelifted version of its ix35 crossover (known as the Tucson here in the U-S-of-A) for the Geneva Motor Show next week. While we haven’t been able to get the Korean automaker to cough up the official details – or more than one image – reports indicate that the new Euro CUV will get revisions to the engine lineup, technology offerings and more.

The Hyundai’s sheetmetal has been nipped and tucked from the looks of the photo, with bolder bi-xenon headlamps and LED running lights the most obvious alterations. Inside we’re told to keep an eye out for improved materials and a new, larger TFT infortainment control screen.

Expect clearer intel about both the ix35 and the home-market Tucson no later than next week, and most likely a bit earlier.

UPDATE: The ix35/Tucson has gone official and is confirmed for Geneva. Press release added below.

Official: Volvo releases extensive model updates for 2014

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The 2014 model year is going to see big changes for the Volvo lineup. The biggest news is that the “60 cluster” models (the S60, V60 and XC60) are receiving some substantial updates despite not being all that old, and Volvo is also refreshing the S80, V70 and XC70 models. Of course, the 2014 model year also marks the departure of the C30 and C70 from its lineup, and we still have at least a year to wait until we see the redesigned XC90.

Except for the XC90, all of the 2014 Volvos will be getting noticeable design updates. The S60, V60 and XC60 get more in-depth changes, including a full front facelift. All will use an evolution of the “naughty” design that debuted on the S60. The rear of all three cars get some changes, too, most notably consisting of the reshaped rear fascia with the integrated exhaust outlets. S80, V70 and XC70 will get more minor changes – mostly to bring them in line with the fresher models. The XC70 keeps is rugged plastic cladding, but it gets some stylish wheels with what look like arrowhead accents.

Inside, all of these updated models will new in-car technology such as the Sensus Connected Touch infotainment system and the adaptive digital display with a TFT (thin film transistor) screen. This reconfigurable screen allows the driver to choose between three different themes – Elegance, Eco and Performance – which changes the color and layout of the background. Other new features include heated windshields, Active High Beam Control for the headlights, paddle shifters for a little added driver involvement and IntelliSafe active safety systems (City Safety, Pedestrian Detection and Road Sign Information) The S80, V70 and XC70 will also add heated steering wheels to their respective options sheets, too.

Volvo also promises improved fuel economy across the board, but no US numbers have been released yet. The press releases for all cars are posted after the jump.

Detroit: 2014 Cadenza is Kia's take on the Hyundai Azera

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Kia Cadenza

No, this is not the oh-so pleasantly named Quoris rear-wheel-drive flagship sedan – this is Kia’s new front-drive entry into the North American market, the Cadenza. (If that sounds familiar, it’s because Kia has long used the Cadenza name in other markets.) And while it’s a sharp-looking thing, it’s not exactly an original masterpiece. Peel away that slick exterior and you’ll find a trusty Hyundai Azera doing the grunt work.

That’s no bad thing, though; the Azera’s a smooth-sailing sedan. Under the hood is a 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 putting out 293 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with, oh yes, Sportmatic manual mode. That power hits the ground via a sport-tuned suspension with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear configuration, matched with either 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, there’s a whole host of nice leather surrounded by wood and chrome accents, with a driver-focused cockpit (sort of like the Optima) with a seven-inch TFT color touchscreen display. Premium options include things like Nappa leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, Kia’s UVO infotainment system, HID headlamps with active lighting, heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Sounds comfy.

Kia will officially launch the Cadenza in the second quarter of 2013, with pricing to be announced closer to the on-sale date. Scroll down for the official press blast.

2013 Dodge Dart GT

Dodge has already shared all of the relevant information about its all-new 2013 Dart GT, but it wasn’t until now that we’ve seen the car, live and in person. The slightly meaner front fascia and bigger wheels look great on the Dodge, and the red-on-black perforated seats are sporting in an aftermarket sort of way.

To recap: The Dart GT also gets a bit more power, using a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to make 184 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. A starting price of $20,995 will get you LED taillights, dual exhaust, an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 7.0-inch TFT display.
