NYC nanny found fit for trial in stabbing deaths

A nanny charged with stabbing two small children to death last year while their mother picked up her other child from a swim lesson was found fit for trial Friday.

Police said they found Yoselyn Ortega last October in the bathroom of her employer’s Upper West Side apartment. The bodies of 6-year-old Lucia Krim, called Lulu, and her 2-year-old brother, Leo, were nearby in a pool of blood, and Ortega had stabbed herself as well. She was taken to a hospital.

Ortega was examined by two mental health professionals, Justice Gregory Carro said in Manhattan state Supreme Court. Both found that she could assist in her defense in a meaningful way and that she was mentally fit to proceed to her trial. Her lawyer, who declined to comment outside court, is challenging those results.

Ortega has pleaded not guilty to murder. Her sister has said she loved the children and is a peaceful woman.

After the children’s funeral, their shattered parents established the Lulu & Leo Fund to raise money for children’s education and enrichment programs. They started a Facebook page for the fund, filled with Lulu’s art and photos of the smiling little girl and her brother.

Ortega’s next court date was set for May 6.

New York City cab driver returns iPhone to customer, refuses reward (in this life)

He’s a cabby with a conscience.

A man who may be the most honest hack in town went out of his way to return a brand-new iPhone 5 to an absent-minded fare — and refused to take a dime in reward.

“Money is nothing to me,” Mohammad Riyaz said after returning the pricey phone to an IBM sales manager who had left it behind after hailing a cab from Madison Square Park to his Upper West Side brownstone.

“This is what it is all about,” Riyaz said about helping others while parked outside the unidentified fare’s home on West 69th Street.

Riyaz spotted the latest iPhone — which can cost from $650 to $850 and is a prized target for thieves — and doggedly tracked down its businessman owner.

The sales manager’s wife, who gave her name only as Marie, said she and her grateful husband tried to persuade the selfless Riyaz to accept $80 cash as a reward and to pay for his trip back uptown.

“What can I do to get you to take it?” she told Riyaz. “And the guy wouldn’t take the money.”

“We tried so many times and he was so nice, so so nice,” added her hubby, who asked not to be identified.
Riyaz said the good deed was all the reward he needed.

“If I died today what’s my money going to do?” he asked. “If I do something good now then when I die good things will happen in the next life.”

Former Navy SEAL enlisting female military veterans to work as nannies in NYC

Gi Jane is coming to a family apartment near you.

Prompted by the Upper West Side slayings of two children by their nanny, a former Navy SEAL has started a company offering to match hypervigilant parents with the ultimate in protection — female military veterans as caregivers.

“That family even went down to the Dominican Republic thinking they were screening the nanny, but they didn’t really know who she was,” Tactical Nanny creator Jonathan Gilliam said of Marina and Kevin Krim, who lost two of their young children in the horrible attack last year.

“We’re not just offering another nanny service. These women have a proven track record. They’re veterans protecting the future of the USA,” said Gilliam, 43.

The former lieutenant — who once served in the Navy’s special operations force, the division that took out Osama bin Laden — said his veteran workers can change diapers as easily as they can reload a semiautomatic.

But they’re also trained to protect people — in this case, kids — with their own lives, he said.
