Police: Nevada man runs over, kills granddaughter

Authorities say a 6-year-old girl is dead after her grandfather accidentally ran over and dragged her as she tried to get into his moving car in southwest Las Vegas.

Metro police say the girl was standing just behind the man’s Dodge Magnum on Tuesday when grandfather started driving away.

They say the girl grabbed onto the vehicle and tried to get into it, but the 52-year-old grandfather didn’t notice. The child was dragged about 40 feet until the vehicle stopped.

The girl, Censere Mosly-Wedemyer, was taken to the University Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police tell KVVU-TV they’re calling the death an accident. They say it’s the 35th traffic-related death this year in Las Vegas police jurisdiction.

Hearing set for man in Nev. crash that killed 5

An 18-year-old man is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence after authorities say he rear-ended a van in southern Nevada, causing a crash that killed five Southern California family members and injured two others.

Jean Soriano of California was being held without bail Sunday in the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas pending the hearing. He also was booked Saturday on charges of failure to decrease speed or use due care, and driving without a driver’s license.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the five victims Sunday as Genaro Fernandez, 41, of Norwalk, Calif.; Raudel Fernandez-Avila, 49, and Belen Fernandez, 53, both of Lynwood, Calif.; and Angela Sandoval, 13, and Leonardo Fernandez-Avila, 45, both of Los Angeles.

The victims were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two were taken to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas with non-life-threatening injuries. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said Sunday that both people had been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

According to the patrol, Soriano’s sport utility vehicle struck the van from behind early Saturday, causing both vehicles to roll on Interstate 15 near the Arizona line, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Soriano and his 23-year-old passenger were treated at the medical center and released Saturday.

Authorities believe Soriano was returning from a visit with family in St. George, Utah, to his home in California at the time of the wreck, Hixson said. They had not released his hometown or any other names as of late Sunday afternoon, and it was not immediately clear whether Soriano had an attorney.

While talking to authorities at the scene, neither the suspect nor his passenger initially admitted to being the SUV driver, Hixson said. But Soriano eventually said he was behind the wheel when the crash occurred.

A truck driver told authorities that he saw the suspect and his passenger initially walk away from the scene but eventually return.

At least a couple of beer bottles were found in the SUV, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won’t be known for a couple of weeks, he said.

Nev. crash kills 5 in Calif. family; teen arrested

Five members of a Southern California family were killed Saturday when their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two — the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy — were hospitalized in critical condition.

Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m. on Interstate 15 near the Utah line. Soriano’s sport utility vehicle struck the van from behind, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and roll near Mesquite, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, investigators said.

A 23-year-old passenger in Soriano’s SUV was treated at the hospital and released.

Authorities believe Soriano was returning from a visit with family in Utah to his home in California at the time of the wreck, Hixson said. They didn’t immediately release his hometown or the names or hometowns of the victims.

Beer bottles were found in the SUV, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won’t be known for a couple of weeks, he said.

Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seatbelts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.

“Unfortunately, so many in the van weren’t wearing seatbelts, and some might have survived had they been wearing them,” Hixson said. “We see it so many times where people can survive simply by having a seatbelt on.”

The van was carrying a couple, their children and some aunts and uncles, he said. Killed were three men in their 40s, a teenage female and an adult female.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Awards Two Grants to Support Comprehensive Cancer Community Collaboration at Several Hospitals in New Jersey

Grants to American Cancer Society and Princeton HealthCare System support navigation programs designed to improve outcomes and promote efficient, cost-effective care for patients with cancer

PRINCETON, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Bristol-Myers Squibb has awarded grants totaling $175,000 to the American Cancer Society Eastern Division and Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) to support comprehensive navigation services for patients with cancer both independently and as part of a collaborative effort among several hospitals in central New Jersey.

Several studies have linked patient navigation to improvements in patient outcomes and survival rates, particularly for patients with cancer. Navigation is viewed as an integral component of cancer services. Navigators help coordinate patients’ care and guide them to resources that can provide psychosocial support and address financial concerns, language or cultural issues, and day-to-day needs such as transportation.

The grant to PHCS supports the expansion of a successful patient navigation program at the system’s acute-care hospital, University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP) in Plainsboro, N.J. The program was first piloted at UMCPP‘s Breast Health Center in East Windsor, N.J., under the guidance of a breast health navigator, and also among UMCPP‘s patients with lung and esophageal cancer. The move toward a Comprehensive Oncology Patient Navigation Program will expand navigation services to encompass all cancer patient categories at UMCPP‘s Edward & Marie Matthews Center for Cancer Care.

The Matthews Center for Cancer Care at UMCPP regularly refers patients to the American Cancer Society, and the two jointly offer the “Look Good Feel Better” program. In addition, the Matthews Center for Cancer Care regularly offers collaborative programs with Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey and frequently refers patients to Cancer Care for counseling and psychosocial services.

PHCS used the Bristol-Myers Squibb grant to expand its patient navigation staff to include a full-time senior navigator at UMCPP, fund a patient orientation program and provide more materials to help patients better understand their diagnoses.

“We envision a program in which all patients who receive a cancer diagnosis at UMCPP [approximately 800 to 900 per year] and patients who are returning for cancer treatment [approximately 200 per year] will be routed through an integrated program in which they will be supported from inception to aftercare,” said Judy …read more

3 dead after shooting on Vegas Strip leads to fiery car crash

Three people were killed after a shooter in a black Range Rover Sport opened fire early Thursday morning on the Las Vegas Strip into a Maserati, striking the car’s driver and passenger, before the car lost control and caused a fiery crash at the intersection of Flamingo and Las Vegas boulevards, KVVU reported.

The driver of the Maserati, a taxi cab driver in the accident and a passenger in the cab were killed. A tourist who witnessed the aftermath of the crash told KLAS-TV the burning taxi looked like a fireball. The SUV got away.

In all, five vehicles were involved in the dramatic crash around 4:30 a.m. Thursday at an intersection surrounded by some of the most famous casinos on the Strip, including the Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the Paris.

Though by most standards, 4:30 a.m. oftentimes offers authorities only a few witnesses, witnesses did come forward to assist in the investigation.

It appears the occupants of the Range Rover Sport, which has black-tinted windows and matching rims, fired into the Maserati and hit the passenger and the driver, Jose Hernandez, the public information officer for the Las Vegas police department, told Fox News. The car’s driver lost control and drove into the intersection and struck a cab and four other vehicles, Hernandez said.

One former law enforcement witness said he heard one gunshot, followed by a series of blasts followed by a ‘very loud boom.’

Several people were taken to the hospital, including a passenger from the Maserati. Four were taken to University Medical Center. Hospital spokeswoman Danita Cohen said three were treated and released, while one person remained in the hospital. Their condition was not released.

The intersection is expected to be closed for hours as officers investigate.

It’s the latest in a series of violent actions on the tourist corridor since the beginning of the year. Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay Feb. 16.

A spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Jeremy Handel, said his organization didn’t immediately have a comment on the incident and deferred to the police unit that patrols the tourism district.
