Nissan Crafts Another Special GT-R—This One’s Purple

By Jeff Jablansky

2014 Nissan GT-R Special Edition

There are three main reasons that automakers craft special editions: to celebrate a new launch, to boost a model’s flagging sales, or to garner some PR for an older vehicle. We’ll let you figure out which of these apply to the five-year-old Nissan GT-R, 624 of which have been sold this year. A limited-production version of the Nissan supercar was already announced for 2014—that’d be the Track Edition—but now buyers will have the option of a second such model, in the form of the factory-customized (and imaginatively named) 2014 Nissan GT-R Special Edition.

If there can be an elegant purple paint, this GT-R wears it. The color is called Midnight Opal, and it straddles the line between deep blue and eggplant. Nissan claims that the hand-applied finish changes color based on light and angle, but in a totally classy way. The SE is one step up from the base GT-R Premium, and is kitted out with specially finished Rays wheels and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler similar to the one fitted to Track and Black Edition GT-Rs. Owners can flash a serial-numbered gold plaque as a certificate of authenticity at track days. (Or at their climate-controlled, carefully dusted private collections. Either way.)

2014 Nissan GT-R Special Edition

No changes are made to the GT-R’s formidable 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6, which has received constant tweaking since launch and now makes 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft. (The original 2009 model made do with 480 hp and 340 lb-ft.) Unlike the GT-R Track, which sacrificed its second row on the altar of weight saving, the SE keeps the vestigial rear seats; in any event, both special models are equally well-suited to accommodating four real people.

The SE adds $6000 to the GT-R’s bottom line, coming in at $106,590. Put another way, the cost increase roughly equals one soon-to-be-launched Datsun Go. Just 100 Special Editions will be assembled for worldwide consumption, and half of them will come here. So if you want your Godzilla to be purple, we suggest you get to steppin’ to your local dealer.

2013 Hyundai Elantra SE Coupe Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

LoveFab Enviate Acura NSX

Hyundai introduces another new model to its existing hot-selling Elantra line with the new Elantra coupe in SE trim.  My test Elantra coupe was painted to the new ‘Blue Sky’ metallic paint to match the blue sky enjoyment that I found during my seven-day test drive.

This new coupe from Hyundai gives young sporty consumers a great bargain price with lots of go, unique styling, a sporty and comfortable interior with the latest in convenient, infotainment and safety systems.  It has it all for a base price of just $20,745.00 for the SE and my test model came with the Technology Package and carpeted floor mats for a total price of just $23,900.00.  I’ll get into the standard equipment and options that made my ride even more fun-to-drive later.

The styling of the Elantra coupe follows Hyundai’s dynamic ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design mantra that imitates the interaction of wind with rigid surfaces to create a look of fluid in motion.  Very few cars some costing above $100,000.00 can match the angular and sexy lines of the Elantra coupe.  Up front is Hyundai’s signature hexagonal wide mouth front fascia opening surrounded with a chrome strip and jeweled swept-back headlights, foglamps down below and aerodynamic power-remote/heated/repeater side mirrors that give the front a lean, more aggressive look.  The silhouette continues the aggressive look with a steeply raked windshield A-pillars and C-pillars, a tapered sloping roof, pull-out door handles, deeply sculpted surfaces and a character line from the end of the flared front fenders all the to the rear lamps.  The side extensions give the car a more hunkered down look with the flared fenders stuffed with 17X7 inch unique alloy wheels wrapped with 215/45R17 inch low-profile performance tires.  From the rear is a blacked-out rear diffuser valance that contrasts with the dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipes gathered together under the right side of the bumper.  The wraparound lamp clusters blend in perfectly and just above is an integral deck lid spoiler to help enhance downforce.  These sculpted and sexy surfaces create a very aerodynamic body with a drag coefficient of just 0.28 that results in minimal wind noise entering the cabin and further enhancing fuel economy.

Powering my new Elantra coupe is a PZEV rated 1.8 liter, in-line four-cylinder, all-aluminum, DOHC engine featuring dual continuously variable valve timing (C-VVT) to flatten the torque band.  It generates 145 hp at 6,500 rpm and 130 lb.ft. of torque at 4,700 rpm to quickly move the new Elantra coupe because of its low curb weight, only 2,729 pounds.  This engine also features a variable induction system, roller swing arm and hydraulic lash adjusters, electronic throttle control and an offset crankshaft.

This engine is mated to Hyundai’s in-house designed and manufactured six-speed manual or its six-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC manual mode.  The automatic is what I had to …read more

Come and Get It While You Can: 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Priced

By Alexander Stoklosa

Mitsubishi might be on the fritz here in the U.S., but the company continues to push forward and keep its head just above water. To wit, the new 2014 Outlander crossover made its U.S. debut at last year’s L.A. auto show, following the plug-in hybrid version’s reveal in Paris, and it goes on sale here in June. Nothing can be sold without a price tag, however, so Mitsubishi has released some basic pricing info for the Outlander. Overall, the Outlander’s sticker doesn’t budge much, if at all, compared to the 2013 model it replaces.

The new Outlander again comes in ES, SE, and GT trim levels; the ES and SE are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, while the up-level GT gets a 3.0-liter V-6. A base, front-drive 2014 Outlander ES starts at $23,820, only $300 more than last year’s model. The SE commands $24,620—$200 less than the 2013 iteration—and adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, a touch-screen infotainment display, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button starting. The GT starts at $28,620, $800 less than the all-wheel-drive 2013 GT, and adds the aforementioned V-6 engine, Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel-drive setup, paddle shifters, HID headlights, and wood grain interior trim.

Mitsubishi’s future still solidly occupies the “questionable” category, but a new crossover like the Outlander perhaps gives the company its best shot yet at motivating a turnaround in this market. It’s priced in the thick of the compact SUV segment—Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Cherokee, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4—but is the only rig to offer a third-row seat. What, you think the tiny, three-cylinder Mirage hatchback will be Mitsu’s ark?

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Land Rover has substantially updated the appeal of its middle-child Range Rover Sport at this year’s New York Auto Show, giving the model a new look, a new powertrain and an optional new third row. Functionality abounds.

As we outlined yesterday, the 2014 Range Rover Sport can now be had with a 340-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, for an opening price of $63,495 in SE trim. Start ticking options boxes on the Range Rover website, and you’ll end up with a 510-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V8 mill at the heart of your $93,295 Range Rover Sport Autobiography. No matter how lushly you specify your Sport, however, you’ll now have the ability to haul two more small children (or unhappy, normal sized adults) in the optional foldaway third-row seating.

We’ve got live images of the 2014 Range Rover Sport, fresh from the floor of New York‘s Javits Center, for your approval. Browse at your leisure or scroll down for a second pass at the Land Rover press release.

Hello, I am trying to get an output from awk and have been unsuccessful so far.
There is an input file which contains certain segments, that needs to be read and append with another data after matching the segment…

Input file is as shown below

My Unix shell script is reading first the AK1 segment from the original file, gets 3525 and lookup in another file where it gets 1234 now all I need is to append this new number (1234) to 3525. Here is what the awk script looks like

Code:

awk '

This DEL_NUM will contain the 1234, 5679, 3436 and 8759.

Thank you for all your help!!

New Data Show Azilect® (rasagiline tablets) Provided Clinical Benefit in Patients with Early Parkins

New Data Show Azilect ® (rasagiline tablets) Provided Clinical Benefit in Patients with Early Parkinson’s When Added to Sub-Optimally Controlled Patients on Dopamine Agonist Therapy

Results Add to Evidence for Azilect as an Effective and Well-Tolerated Treatment Option at Different Stages of the Progression of Parkinson’s Disease (PD)

JERUSALEM–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NYS: TEVA) and H. Lundbeck A/S announced today that a double-blind, placebo controlled, randomized, multicenter study of Azilect® (rasagiline tablets) met its primary endpoint. The study, known as ANDANTE (Add oN to Dopamine AgoNists in the TrEatment of Parkinson’s disease), assessed the efficacy and tolerability of Azilect as add-on treatment to dopamine agonists compared to placebo. While the efficacy of Azilect as adjunct to levodopa has been established in previous studies (leading to its indication as adjunct therapy to levodopa), its efficacy in combination with dopamine agonist monotherapy has not previously been studied.

Results from the study demonstrated that the addition of Azilect 1mg/day provided a statistically significant improvement (Primary endpoint: treatment effect ± SE -2.4 ± 0.95 [95% CI -4.3,-0.5, p=0.012]) in total Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score (Parts I, II and III, version three) from baseline to week 18 in patients sub-optimally controlled with dopamine agonist monotherapy compared to placebo. Azilect was well-tolerated with no significant difference in adverse events compared to placebo.

“The positive outcome of this study is important news for the PD community, for patients and physicians,” said Robert A. Hauser, M.D., M.B.A., Director, Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders Center at the University of South Florida and primary investigator of the study. “In addition to rasagiline providing symptomatic benefit to patients sub-optimally controlled with dopamine agonist monotherapy, the study confirmed that rasagiline is well-tolerated and provided proof-of-concept for adding rasagiline to dopamine agonist therapy.”

As a monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitor, Azilect acts by increasing available synaptic dopamine. This mode of action provided the rationale for add-on therapy to dopamine agonists in the management of PD.

“The ANDANTE data continue to clarify the clinical profile of Azilect and the role it plays in helping to meet the needs of those living with PD, at multiple points in the progression of their disease,” said Dr. Michael Hayden, President of Global R&D and Chief Scientific Officer at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. “Teva is committed to the continued research and understanding of Azilect in PD and to sharing important findings like these with the scientific community.”

Review: 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

By Seyth Miersma

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid - front three-quarter view

More Fun Than A Prius, Less Sensible Than A TDI

Let’s have some fun, and do some math. We’re talking pretty rudimentary stuff, multiplication and division, to figure out if the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid can make a baseline case for itself against two very strong competitors in this segment. The competitors in question, at least for now, are two more Jettas: the diesel-drinking TDI and the fit-for-the-masses SE with VW‘s long-serving 2.5-liter engine.

To keep the equations clean and simple (hey, we’re writers), we’ll calculate based on the most flattering EPA miles per gallon stat from highway driving for all cars, assume a healthy 20,000 miles driven per year, and factor in today’s average cost for the respective fuels these three require: diesel (TDI), regular (SE) and premium (Hybrid). We’ll also start with the base prices for all models.

With all of that info loaded into our mental hoppers, how much time does it take to make the 45-mpg fuel economy of the Jetta Hybrid offset its premium price? To refresh, the $24,995 Hybrid is $2,005 more than the TDI and a heady $6,000 more than the SE. With highway economy ratings of 43 mpg for the TDI and 48 for the Hybrid, even considering that diesel fuel is more expensive, it’d take you about seven years of Hybrid driving before you’ve paid off the technology premium. The regular-gas sipping SE is a still more compelling argument for the frugal, as you’ll need to drive your hybrid for roughly 13 years to make up the sticker difference at today’s fuel prices. Bring the miles driven down to a closer-to-average 12k per year, and the payback takes even longer.
