Watch the Trailer for Sam Mendes' Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Here’s the trailer for Sam Mendes‘ next project: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It’s not another film version but an all-new stage adaptation of the beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl, coming to London later this year.

Douglas Hodge – four time Olivier-nominated actor/director – will star as the eccentric confectioner Willy Wonka, with Nigel Planer as Grandpa Joe and Clive Carter as Mr Salt. The show is set to feature “ingenious stagecraft” and music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (who won a Grammy for their work on Hairspray).

The show will run at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. Opening night is June 25th, 2013, with the initial run taking bookings until November 30th, 2013.

Bond 24 Might Not Happen for Three More Years

Skyfall was a big success for the James Bond franchise, but Sony/MGM’s early hopes to get the next 007 film — currently called simply Bond 24 — out by 2014 seem to have been dashed.

According to Reuters, MGM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber told investors in a conference call yesterday that they “look forward to developing the script soon and signing a director. We are hoping within the next 3 years it will be released.”

Of course, Skyfall director Sam Mendes’ decision to not take on the sequel surely didn’t help the studio’s intention to fast-track Bond 24. So what are we looking at now? A 2015 or 2016 release? Still, it was four years between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, and look how that turned out. Maybe sometimes it’s better to give these franchises some breathing room between installments.

Roger Deakins & Oscar: ‘Skyfall’ Cinematography Loses Academy Award Again

Roger Deakins and Oscar can’t get together.

Deakins, one of the most acclaimed cinematographers of the modern era, lost in the Best Cinematography category to “Life of Pi” cinematographer Claudio Miranda at the 85th annual Academy Awards. This was Deakins’ 10th nomination without securing a win.

The 63-year-old Deakins is responsible for the look of some of the most beloved films from the last 20 years. To wit, he was nominated in the Best Cinematography category for “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Fargo,” “Kundun,” “O Brother Where Art Thou?,” “The Man Who Wasn’t There,” “No Country for Old Men,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “The Reader” and “True Grit.” Deakins is a frequent collaborator of the Coen Brothers and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes; in addition to “Skyfall,” Deakins also shot “Jarhead” and “Revolutionary Road.”

Producers Want Mendes For Bond 24

While travelling from London to Edinburgh on the newly launched Skyfall train, we caught up with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to discuss the future of the franchise and whether or not Sam Mendes will return as director.

IGN: How do you top Skyfall with Bond 24?

Michael G. Wilson: I have no idea!

Barbara Broccoli: It’s very difficult.The key thing for us is Daniel Craig, who I think has brought a tremendous amount to the films. His reinterpretation of the character is very contemporary. I think he pushes the envelope, he manages to be very dangerous and yet have tremendous humanity. He’s our secret weapon. Then of course the challenge is to create a story that is worthy of him. And a story that explores Bond’s emotional life and takes him emotionally to places that he hasn’t been to before. And then pits him up against a contemporary villain. We always look at what the world is afraid of then try to create a villain that is the physical interpretation of that fear. That’s where we start. Then writers create a script. Then we get a director on. With each person they bring another layer of complexity and talent.

Sam Mendes May Return for Bond 24

Skyfall director Sam Mendes is considering returning to the franchise for the forthcoming Bond 24.

According to the MailOnline, Mendes is “75 per cent” of the way to saying yes, with the helmer waiting to see John Logan’s finished script before committing.

Mendes had previously been reluctant to take the job because Bonds 24 and 25 were going to be shot back-to-back as a two-part story, meaning that he’d be working on them for four years.

But that plan has now been dropped, with the two pictures now stand-alone movies.

Skyfall Duo's Vampire/Frankenstein Show at Showtime

As previously reported, Skyfall director Sam Mendes and co-writer John Logan are developing a new vampire hunter TV series set in 1800s London. Last we heard, the Bond duo sent out a script to several premium cable networks.

Now, Deadline reports that Showtime has picked up the high-concept drama project, which is eyeing a straight-to-series order. Logan and Mendes will executive produce, and Mendes will likely direct.

The untitled show, which has been tweaked slightly to fit the Showtime series model, is described as “a psychological horror drama series with literary underpinnings, including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature.”
