Rolls-Royce Wraith Interior Teased, Inspired by Yachts, Airplanes, and France [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By John Lamm

Sir Frederick Henry Royce, OBE, was the 1st Baronet of Seaton. He was likely not a tease, but that hasn’t stopped the company he helped found from slowly revealing details on its upcoming Rolls-Royce Wraith. We’ve been told that it will be the most powerful Rolls ever built. That its 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-12 will trigger a world standstill. And we’ve seen a shadow—get it?—of the car’s ear end. And now we have some details on the car’s interior.

The Wraith’s sitting room will have appointments both “luxurious” and “contemporary,” mimicking the car’s exterior, the release says. As you might expect, bountiful portions of wood will be featured, but not just any wood—it’s an open-pore type Rolls has dubbed “Canadel Panelling.” Areas of the cabin not covered in wood will be finished with the “softest ‘Phantom-grade’ leathers.” The inspiration for the Wraith’s interior, according to Rolls, comes from luxury yachts and the seaside towns in which they dock.

Rolls-Royce goes on to tell us that “the horseshoe sweep of Wraith’s cabin . . . echoes the cove at Le Canadel in the south of France where Sir Henry Royce and his design team spent their winters.” (Have you been to England in the winter? We’d have headed for France, too.) The Wraith also will nod to the company’s history in the aviation industry: The hands on the analog clock are tipped with Blood Orange coloring, like the needles in avionics gauges.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith, yacht- and airplane-inspired interior and all, will make its debut at the 2013 Geneva auto show. The car’s name is plucked from Roller history, and it describes “the ghost or ghostlike image of someone, especially seen shortly before or after their death.” In that sense, we suppose using the name is smart marketing in this age where everyone thinks vampires are awesome, but another definition has the word “used in similes and metaphors to describe a pale, thin, or insubstantial person or thing.” A $300,000 car with 600 horsepower (or more) is hardly insubstantial—Sir Royce may have been a tease after all.

Pardon Me: Iconic Grey Poupon Ads Returning for the Oscars

By Matt Brownell

Grey Poupon

Filed under: This year’s Academy Awards will see the return of a long-lost cinematic legend: the “Pardon Me” commercials for Grey Poupon mustard.

The Associated Press reports that the Dijon mustard brand will return to the airwaves more than 16 years after its “Pardon Me” ads last aired. Kraft will run an updated version of the ad during the Oscars on Feb. 24, and according to the AP report, we’ll get to see what happens after the old man in the Rolls-Royce gets his hands on the requested condiment.

8 arrested in murder of Russian councilman

Zooming around in a Rolls Royce and boasting of ties to Chechnya’s strongman ruler, Mikhail Pakhomov didn’t live the life of the average provincial Russian lawmaker. He didn’t die the death of one either.

Pakhomov, 37, a councilman from the industrial city of Lipetsk, 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of Moscow, was found beaten to a pulp at the bottom of a barrel of cement Monday after what investigators say was a business deal gone wrong — and a kidnapping that went even worse.

Evgeny Kharitonov, a former senior official in the Moscow regional government, was arrested at a Moscow airport Monday and charged with organizing Pakhomov’s kidnapping over an $80 million debt. A warrant was issued Tuesday for his business partner, Sergei Krasovsky. Four other men are charged with the murder-kidnapping, and another three with a related theft.

The case has gathered wide public attention. Some Russians have referred to it as a “postcard from the 1990s,” when business, political and criminal interests mixed together and often exploded into violence.

The son of a well-known Lipetsk theatrical couple, Pakhomov ran Liter, a construction and transport company. A former Lipetsk police official was quoted by local media as saying he had been arrested for robbing a shop with a well-known mafia gang in 1995 and on suspicion of kidnapping in 2010, but never charged. After a failed attempt in 2011 to win election to Russia‘s parliament as a candidate of the Kremlin-backed United Russia, he became a city councilman last October.

Despite his modest public salary, Pakhomov lived an extravagant lifestyle. He cruised around in his Rolls Royce, boasted of connections to Chechnya’s strongman leader Ramzan Kadyrov, and surrounded himself with women, the newspaper Kommersant reported.

Police accused Kharitonov and Krasovsky of turning to unemployed men from the Moscow region to carry out the kidnapping. Several failed attempts to kidnap him were made last year. Finally, last week, he was bundled him into a car as he left a restaurant outside Lipetsk.

When Pakhomov resisted, the men hit his head against the car door so hard that he eventually bled to death, local media reported, citing police. Police said they determined the kidnapped man was Pakhomov after they found his jeans, phone, and shoes in the street outside the restaurant.

When they arrived in Moscow, police said, the kidnappers refused to go back to Lipetsk to steal documents from Pakhomov’s car, a task they had forgotten to carry out in the heat of the moment. Kharitonov and Krasovsky then paid three other men 60 million rubles (about $2,000) to go back and get them, according to local media, citing police.

But while driving back to Moscow, investigators said, the men were pulled over for speeding by traffic police, who found Pakhomov’s passport in their car. The men then led police to the other suspects.

Although police did not specify where the alleged $80 million debt came from, local media pointed to contracts Liter had with the two men charged with organizing his kidnapping. Krasovsky is the former head of a …read more

Teased: Rolls-Royce releases another shadowy look at new Wraith

Rolls-Royce Wraith - rear end teaser

Filed under:

Rolls-Royce has dropped a third teaser for its upcoming coupe that we’ll be seeing in a few weeks at the Geneva Motor Show. A couple of weeks ago, we saw the 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith in a shadowy profile shot, and now we’re getting an (admittedly limited) idea of what the rear of the car will look like.

As suggested by a recent set of spy shots, the 2014 Wraith should have a rear-end styling very similar – if not identical – to the Rolls-Royce Ghost, which this car is a coupe version of. In typical Rolls-Royce fashion, the British automaker promises that this new model will deliver plenty of power, style and drama, though it’s declining to get more specific about what that power is (other than to say it will be “more than ample”). We have no indication that the engine won’t be the 563-horsepower, 6.6-liter V8 that’s in the Ghost, but we’ll have to wait until next month to find out for sure.

First Drive: 2013 Land Rover Range Rover

By Jonathon Ramsey

The Imperial Super Star Destroyer of SUVs

2013 Land Rover Range Rover

Andrew Polsinelli, Land Rover North America’s head of product planning, told us this is what owners requested of the new, fourth-generation Range Rover: “Don’t change it, just make it better.” Superficially, the request appears to represent that species of conflicted, mashed-potato yearning that births other such entreaties as “I want it to be non-fat but still rich and full of flavor,” and “I’d like more cashiers and better service at the 99-cent store.”

Focus on the word “it” in the first part of that demand, though, and one can begin to find clarity. When they say “Don’t change it,” that isn’t a command to leave everything untouched on the 42-year-old SUV franchise that can simultaneously rule the farm and the Bolivian highlands and a refugee camp and the vogue enclaves of any national capital. They mean don’t change the ‘Range Roverness‘ of it, the feeling that it’s penthouse automotive luxury – a donked-out Rolls-Royce if you will, a Phantom on thirty-sixes but without the rapper/kingpin connotations. Beyond that comes the knowledge that if you want to get from Los Angeles to Miami in your Range Rover, you can take the straight shot over the I-10 freeway or a slight detour through the Canadian tundra. And it’s still the only SUV extant that will have the driver looking for buttons with the icons for serfs or footmen upon arrival (because you can’t be expected to have to do things yourself, can you?).

That feeling remains in the 2013 Range Rover. And the latest generation is better. So there’s the prime directive accomplished. Furthermore, it is so capable that it’s not wrong to call this the Super Star Destroyer of SUVs.

It does, however, look a little different.

Report: Rick Ross crashes Rolls-Royce in drive-by attempt [w/video]

By Seyth Miersma

Rap star and exotic-car enthusiast, Rick Ross, had a double-close call on Monday morning, escaping harm in what appears to be an attempted drive-by shooting.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, Ross was driving his 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost (pictured) with his girlfriend, Shateria Moragne-el, as a passenger at 5:00 AM on Monday. An unnamed gunman in another vehicle opened fire on Ross’ car, causing the rapper to turn a corner, lose control of the vehicle and eventually crash into the wall of an apartment complex. Neither Ross nor Moragne-el was injured, despite reports that “dozens” of ammo casings were found at the crime scene.

Ross had been out celebrating his birthday on Sunday night; at nearby restaurant Floridian and a club called LIV in Miami Beach. Reports indicate that the restaurant was also the target of gunfire – some 15 shots that “sounded like they came from a high-powered rifle.”

Scroll down below for a video wrap-up of the events.

2014 Mini Clubman Bond Street: You’re Probably Better Off with a Used Goodwood Edition

By Justin Berkowitz

Mini Clubman Bond Street

Even after a decade of business under German management, Mini is still beating away at the “We’re Cheeky Brits” drum. Beyond Union Jack decals and London Olympics sponsorship, the company has offered such a flood of London-inspired special editions that one assumes they were the product of a weeklong pub crawl. (Ja, I vill have ze fish und chips!) The latest is the Clubman Bond Street, named for a posh shopping neighborhood best described as a rainier, colder, less-silicon-implanted Rodeo Drive.

The standard Clubman—with either the 121-hp Cooper engine or the 181-Cooper S unit—is sprayed in a metallic black paint, while the roof, C-pillars, and trim are done in a gold color called Cool Champagne. Seats, armrests, and the instrument panel are all trimmed in black leather with contrasting stitching. Mini is including a number of options as standard kit for the Clubman Bond Street, including chrome exterior trim, automatic climate control, and rain-sensing automatic headlights.

It’s an appealing package for a small number of buyers, many of whom, we suspect, will only learn the Clubman Bond Street exists when they fall in love with one at the dealer. For people who want a particularly special Mini, though, the real action is with a leftover or slightly used Mini Inspired by Goodwood, the brand’s we-won’t-say-Rolls-Royce homage to Rolls-Royce. There are unsold cars with delivery miles advertised for $40,000—that’s 23 percent off the original price—and used ones ring in for even less. Pricing for the Clubman Bond Street will be cheap as chips in comparison; the exact number will be released closer to the car’s arrival at dealers this March.

Rolls-Royce Claims Wraith Will Trigger World Standstill, Releases Image [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Austin Lindberg

The British luxury automaker Rolls-Royce has released a shadowy image of its upcoming luxury coupe based on the Ghost sedan, the Wraith. “When Wraith is present, for that fleeting moment, the world will stand still,” the press release announces in flowery prose. In preparation for that moment, we can deduce from the attached computer-enhanced rendering that the Wraith will sport a fastback, frameless windows, and a set of suicide doors.

The Wraith will be motivated by a version of the Ghost’s 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-12; it will be rated at around 600 horsepower. The two-door luxury coupe likely will likely be governed at 155 mph. Under the skin, it shares many componentes with the current BMW 7-series, but they are masterfully concealed beneath beautifully crafted exterior panels outside, and generously applied wood and leather inside.

Positioned just above the Bentley Continental GT and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-class coupe, the Wraith is expected to rejuvenate the Rolls-Royce brand’s image and broaden its appeal to a younger set of customers. It will be offered for the 2014 model year and likely set buyers back by around $300,000. Provided that the world starts spinning again after its launch, of course.

Union: Rolls-Royce to close UK plant

Britain’s largest trade union, Unite, says that Rolls-Royce is planning to close its U.K. defense operations, resulting in the loss of some 400 jobs.

The union said staff at the firm was informed of the company’s plans to shut the plant at Ansty, near Coventry, an internal memo Tuesday.

Rolls-Royce was unable to comment when contacted about reports of the closure.

The plant employs about 800 people and handles the refit and repair of airplane and marine engines.

Unite claimed that the closure is proposed to take place in the next few years, and blamed the British government’s cuts to the national defense budget for the decision.

Rolls-Royce Wraith Teaser #1 - profile

Rolls-Royce Wraith spyshot - front three-quarter view, disguisedWell here’s a nice twofer. On the same day Rolls-Royce releases its first official teaser image showing the 2014 Wraith, we also get a look at the car undergoing some cold-weather testing courtesy of some new spy shots. As the coupe version of the Ghost, the 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith will make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and it’s expected to go on sale during the fourth quarter of this year.

Rolls-Royce already confirmed plenty of information in a teaser it released last week, but the latest image shows us a clear shot of what the car’s midsection will look like. Comparing this image and the spy shots, we can see that the Wraith will have a pretty sleek – (almost Bentley Continental GT-like) roofline, and, like the Phantom Coupe, it will have rear-hinged doors. We can also tell from the spy shots that it seems to be keeping the same face as the Ghost and taillights, too.

Be sure to check out the latest spy photos for the Wraith as well as a brief press release from Rolls-Royce by scrolling below.

Report: Rolls-Royce Ghost meets its muddy maker in Jakarta flood

By Jeffrey N. Ross

When severe weather or a natural disaster strikes an area, it’s hard to get sentimental over trivial possessions like cars, but at the same time, as auto enthusiasts, it always pains us to see a rare car lost regardless of the circumstances. Heavy rains in Jakarta, Indonesia have produced the worst flooding in the city since 2007, which according to Reuters has left an estimated 18,000 people displaced from their homes in addition to six deaths, leaving the roadways covered covered in feet of water.

One of the many cars claimed by the rising waters was this Rolls-Royce Ghost that is surrounded by water that almost fully covers the massive wheels. There is no word as to how much water got inside this Ghost, but it was obviously enough that it could be bailed out by the bucket.

Rolls-Royce Debuting Wraith, Its Most Powerful Model Ever [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

Rolls-Royce Wraith Spirit of Ecstasy

Rolls-Royce has announced the coming of an all-new model to be called Wraith, and it claims the new car will be the most powerful Roller ever. The company hasn’t specified what form the Wraith will take, but our guess is that it is a coupe version of the brand’s “entry-level” Ghost sedan. Rolls-Royce’s newest model will make its big debut at the 2013 Geneva auto show in March before going on at the end of this year.

According to Rolls-Royce, the Wraith will be “the most dynamic, powerful, and beautiful [car] in the company’s history.” That’s a rather bold statement from an automaker that used to not quote power figures for its engines, preferring instead to label them “adequately powered.”

Instead of offering hard details on the Wraith, Rolls-Royce did provide nearly a page-long list of suggested responses to the yet-unrevealed car’s presence. Gems like “When you encounter Wraith, your world stands still as it whispers by” or “it possesses an unmistakable presence but is difficult, if not impossible, to corral” festooned all over the Wraith announcement attempt to set up wild anticipation.

2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost coupe

Continuing the theme, Rolls explains its choice of the (admittedly super-bad-ass) Wraith name by stating the word “alludes to an almost imperceptible but powerful force, something rare, agile, and potent, a spirit that will not be tethered to the earth.” This statement fits with what the engineers lapping a two-door Ghost test mule on the Nürburgring (see the photo above) must have had in mind when they jumped it. Also, Rolls-Royce has used the Wraith name on several models since 1938—okay, you got us, we just wanted an excuse to publish that photo of a flying Rolls-Royce again.

Teased: Rolls-Royce teases Wraith debut in Geneva

By Zach Bowman

Rolls-Royce Wraith Teaser

Rolls-Royce is headed to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show with a new addition to its lineup: the Wraith. The ultra-luxury automaker says it plans to start deliveries by the fourth quarter of this year, though details are scarce at the moment. The automaker has contented itself with saying the Wraith will the “most dynamic, powerful and beautiful Rolls-Royce in the company’s history.” We hear it will be the most modest, too.

Rolls-Royce first began using the Wraith nameplate in 1938. The original car used a tweaked version of the 4.3-liter inline six-cylinder found in the company’s 25/30, but its real claim to fame came from the fact that it boasted speed-variable hydraulic dampers. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 85 miles per hour, Rolls-Royce only built 492 examples of the vehicle’s chassis.

You can look for the new Wraith to bow at the Geneva Motor Show in March. In the interim, check out the shockingly bare press release below and get ready for a spate of teasers to follow.

Official: Rolls-Royce rings up best-ever sales year

By Jonathon Ramsey

The wheeled monolith above is the 2013 Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase – a rolling demonstration of the real definition of “More.” For that reason we can use it as a symbol of the firm’s sales, which have not only achieved ‘more’ for the past three years but have also broken company records. Adding to its record-setting years in 2010 and 2011, the Goodwood-based carmaker moved 3,575 units, an increase of 38 over the year before.

The US retook its crown as the greatest consumers of Rolls-Royces, snagging it back from China. Other market movers were the Middle East, where sales rose 26 percent, Mainland Europe – the same place where mass-market makers are drowning in woe and inventory – that rose by 21 percent, and the Asia Pacific region and its 18-percent rise. Rolls-Royce is probably making more money on its cars, too, with bespoke uptake reaching 95 percent on the 10-year-old Phantom line and 73 percent for the Ghost line.

With a just-refreshed lineup and one or perhaps two more models coming, the indicators for more upward sales movement are strong, even if we don’t know how soon the new models will arrive. For 2012, the brand that sells more cars above $200,000 than any other proved the saying that storms can’t affect you when you live above the clouds. The press release below has more to say about the record year.

Rolls-Royce Phantom celebrates decade of decadence

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe - dead-on view

Ten years ago, Rolls-Royce opened its Goodwood manufacturing facility and handed over the keys to the very first Phantom. Back then, parent company BMW was cranking out Phantom sedans at the blistering pace of one unit per day. By the end of 2003, that number had tripled, and today, the Goodwood plant builds a total of 20 Phantoms in sedan, coupe, drophead and extended-wheelbase models during a single day’s working hours. Originally, there were fewer than 400 workers on staff responsible for hand-building the big cruisers, but now the plant boasts over 1,400 craftsmen, with 100 of those positions added in 2012 alone.

Rolls-Royce boasts one of the lowest staff turnover rates of any brand in the industry, thanks in part to a successful apprenticeship and internship program, and the company notes 80 percent of its workers live within 15 miles of the facility. You can read the full press release on the 10th anniversary of both the Phantom and the Goodwood plant below.

Report: Man drives Rolls-Royce for 78 years then makes museum donation to ensure its preservation

By Michael Harley

Mr. Allen Swift died in 2005 at the impressive age of 102, but his automotive story is even more remarkable. Not only is the gentleman credited with owning a Rolls-Royce automobile longer than anyone else in the world, but he had the forethought and funds to ensure its future preservation after his death.

In 1928, while living in Springfield, Massachusetts, Swift’s father gave him a 1928 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly P1 Roadster as a graduation present (Springfield and Rolls-Royce have a history – from 1920 to 1931, the British automaker built 2,944 vehicles in the city as part of its attempt to establish a US plant). The young man was passionate about his green-over-green softtop convertible, not only driving it on a regular basis, but maintaining it meticulously over the decades (the two door-received a complete body-off restoration and engine rebuild in 1988).

Rolls-Royce acknowledged Mr. Swift in 1994, awarding him a crystal Spirit of Ecstasy award for his length of ownership. By 2005, Swift had logged more than 170,000 miles on its analog odometer and he was recognized as the oldest living person to have owned a car from new. He passed away that year.

But the story doesn’t end there. Swift left the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History a $1 million gift to create a new exhibition to care for his roadster and tell the story of Rolls-Royce manufacturing in the Massachusetts town. Today, Mr. Swift’s beautiful Piccadilly P1 Roadster is prominently displayed in the museum’s Transportation Collection.
