Sharpton Plans National Protests

The Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for a “Justice for Trayvon National Day of Action” on Saturday and say demonstrations are planned in more than 100 cities nationwide.

Saying there would not have been a trial in Florida without pressure from activists, Sharpton was confident that continued pressure would result in a federal civil rights case.

“When they’re telling you today, ‘I don’t know if they’re going to get a civil rights trial:’ We will. And we will get a civil trial,” Sharpton said on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” on Monday morning. “What we’ve watched the last several weeks was not the system correcting itself, it was the people correcting the system. Now we’ve got to finish the job.”

National Action Network is organizing the protests at federal court buildings to press the Justice Department to bring a civil rights case against George Zimmerman, who was found not guilty in the death of teenager Trayvon Martin by a Florida jury on Saturday.

Sharpton said his National Action Network intends to keep the pressure on until a civil rights case is brought, insisting the protests will show the national anger over the verdict is not a “two- or three-day” thing.

Eric Holder: Gun Lobby Stands For ‘Violent And Dangerous Status Quo’

Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday called on the American people to “stand with and support” politicians who support proposed gun reforms when the Senate votes on the proposals in the coming weeks.

“Many have said that these will be ‘tough’ votes, and I understand that the gun lobby will attack some who support reform But progress is never easy, and taking risks to ensure change is almost always necessary,” Holder said during a speech before the National Action Network on Thursday.

“The American people must stand with and support those who will be with us on this critical issue. The collective voice of those who overwhelmingly support the proposed reforms must overcome the efforts of the well-financed few who stand for a violent and dangerous status quo. Those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence — the victims and the survivors — are depending on us,” Holder said.

Detroit Emergency Financial Manager Kevyn Orr Had Tax Liens on His Home

DETROIT (AP) – The auto-industry turnaround expert picked to steer Detroit back from the brink of financial ruin had tax liens on his Maryland home, records show.

Kevyn Orr, Detroit’s new emergency financial manager, had two outstanding liens on his $1 million home in Chevy Chase, Md., for $16,000 in unemployment taxes in 2010 and 2011, The Detroit News reported Saturday. The Maryland state records also show that two other liens of more than $16,000 in unemployment and income taxes were satisfied in 2010 and 2011.

Orr, a partner in the Cleveland-based law firm of Jones Day who represented Chrysler during its successful restructuring, was appointed Detroit’s financial manager by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Thursday.

Orr said Friday he didn’t know anything about the liens when shown the records by the News. On Saturday, the Washington, D.C., bankruptcy attorney said he now is paid up on state liens.

“It’s on me – it’s something that fell through the cracks,” Orr told the Detroit Free Press.

Orr, 54, apologized for the oversight, saying he always tries to be attentive to such matters and wasn’t aware of the liens until he was notified about them on Friday.

“It’s remarkably embarrassing,” Orr said. “I called and paid it up Friday. I wanted to make sure I addressed it as soon as I could.”

Sara Wurfel, a spokeswoman for Snyder, said the governor’s office wasn’t aware of the liens until the News asked about them.

“It did not come up in any of the vetting,” she said.

Critics of the emergency manager said the liens are troubling, because one of Orr’s jobs will be to improve Detroit’s tax-collecting operations.

Detroit is saddled with a $327 million budget deficit and more than $14 billion in long-term debt. City records estimate that Detroit collected $32 million less in income taxes than it was owed in 2011.

“It’s quite interesting that (Orr) feels he could manage the city of Detroit, and he’s having trouble managing his own affairs,” said the Rev. Charles Williams II, president of the National Action Network of Michigan and an opponent of Orr’s appointment.

An expected state takeover has been the hottest of hot button issues in Detroit, and Gov. Rick Snyder‘s Thursday announcement of a state takeover and the appointment of Kevyn Orr to the position of emergency financial manager (EFM) is likely to bring even more heat to the situation.

Many residents of the majority African-American city feel the appointment of an EFM is a form of political disenfranchisement. In Detroit, some are now engaging in political protest and civil disobedience in an effort to make their voices heard.

During Snyder’s Thursday press conference at the Cadillac Place building in Detroit’s New Center district, a crowd of picketers from Good Jobs Now, the National Action Network and other groups made clear their opposition to the EFM appointment.

MLK's dream still not fulfilled, son says

As he looked across a room filled with civil rights veterans, White House officials and leaders from corporate America, Martin Luther King III said that the issues his father championed and died for have yet to be fulfilled in many communities across the country.

“My heart is heavy today! A people who do not remember their history are doomed to repeat their mistakes,” said King, who spoke at a luncheon in the District, sponsored by the National Action Network, that was held on what would have been his father’s 84th birthday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, the group’s president, hosted events in Washington and New York on Tuesday in honor of the slain civil rights leader, but he told community leaders to beware of reducing King’s legacy to the commemorative events held around his birthday.

“Martin Luther King can’t be reduced to a ceremony,” Sharpton said….

Top Two Reasons I’m A Conservative American Black

Growing up in the late sixties and seventies, I saw that era’s crazy clothes and crazier behavior and even as a child dismissed what I’d come to know as socialism.

I’ve always been old-school, preferring dignity and civic duty over demonstrations and civil unrest. Old-school brothers like Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens have always been my idea of how Black men should navigate great issues of the day: passionately, but always with an eye on uplifting America instead of tearing her down.

New old-school ones like US Senator Tim Scott are added as well.

Always a traditionalist, I’d like to share the top two reasons for old-school American Blacks to call themselves the loaded C-word: conservative.

1. Conservative American Blacks aren’t out here committing crimes, joining gangs, and making murder the number one public health hazard for young urban men. Our liberals hate to hear it, but their beloved moral relativism mass-produces what I call “chocolate Klansmen” who rampage without remorse.

For this reason alone, self-respecting American Blacks should call themselves conservative.

2. Conservative American Black women are God-fearing, industrious, and the exact opposite of Obama phone ladies and other female nightmares destroying our child development and public decorum.

Conservative American Black women aren’t the ones having babies randomly, abusing the welfare system, or parading around half-naked in public.

Conservative American Blacks aren’t the ones cornering the market on being thugs and baby mamas. We shouldn’t apologize for having dignity and shouldn’t cut any slack on those who don’t.

These top two reasons, critics will note, have nothing to do with White folks. Sorry to bring race into it, but this is the Left’s favorite weapon.

One tired accusation liberal uncle toms use (despite being being bought and paid for by a pale politburo) is that Black conservatives are economically controlled by racist Republicans.

It’s odd considering how liberal icons Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, alongside the NAACP, National Urban League, Rainbow Coalition, and National Action Network, are primarily funded by non-Black owned corporations.

I don’t discriminate when it comes to the free market; but since Black liberals color-code conservative supporters, turnabout now becomes fair play.

To my old-school American Black sisters and brothers: calling yourselves conservative means divorcing yourselves away from the morally void, vulgar, and violent vision of the Black Left.

Would you rather be a community where upright people like US Senator Tim Scott and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice are the norm, or modern minstrel show characters courtesy of devolved Hip Hop and the six o’clock news?

Lack of thugs and baby mamas are the top two reasons why I’m a conservative American Black. I prefer people of any pigmentation to have dignity.

If you’re really old-school, you do too.
