Fish Oil Could Boost Immune System, Study Suggests

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil may have benefits beyond potentially boosting heart health — they could also benefit the immune system, according to a new study in mice.

Researchers from Michigan State University and East Carolina University found that feeding fish oil high in the omega-3 fatty acid compound DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) seemed to boost activity of a white blood cell called a B cell, a vital part of the body’s immune response. And because of the particular way the DHA-rich fish oil worked in the mice, the researchers noted the finding could have special applications for people with compromised immune systems.

The findings, which are published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, included comparing two groups of mice — one that was fed a control diet, and one that was fed a diet that included DHA-rich fish oil. After five weeks, researchers took B cells from the mouse tissue and then examined them in the lab for B cell activation.

Bee Buzz Creates Electric Field That Helps Insects Communicate

The electric fields that build up on honey bees as they fly, flutter their wings, or rub body parts together may allow the insects to talk to each other, a new study suggests. Tests show that the electric fields, which can be quite strong, deflect the bees’ antennae, which, in turn, provide signals to the brain through specialized organs at their bases.

Scientists have long known that flying insects gain an electrical charge when they buzz around. That charge, typically positive, accumulates as the wings zip through the air—much as electrical charge accumulates on a person shuffling across a carpet. And because an insect’s exoskeleton has a waxy surface that acts as an electrical insulator, that charge isn’t easily dissipated, even when the insect lands on objects, says Randolf Menzel, a neurobiologist at the Free University of Berlin in Germany.

Although researchers have suspected for decades that such electrical fields aid pollination by helping the tiny grains stick to insects visiting a flower, only more recently have they investigated how insects sense and respond to such fields. Just last month, for example, a team reported that bumblebees may use electrical fields to identify flowers recently visited by other insects from those that may still hold lucrative stores of nectar and pollen. A flower that a bee had recently landed on might have an altered electrical field, the researchers speculated.

Now, in a series of lab tests, Menzel and colleagues have studied how honey bees respond to electrical fields. In experiments conducted in small chambers with conductive walls that isolated the bees from external electrical fields, the researchers showed that a small, electrically charged wand brought close to a honey bee can cause its antennae to bend. Other tests, using antennae removed from honey bees, indicated that electrically induced deflections triggered reactions in a group of sensory cells, called the Johnston’s organ, located near the base of the antennae. In yet other experiments, honey bees learned that a sugary reward was available when they detected a particular pattern of electrical field.

Altogether, these tests suggest that the electrical fields that build up on bees due to their flight or movement are stimuli that could be used in social communication, the researchers report online this week in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

The team’s findings “are very significant,” says Fred Dyer, a behavioral biologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing. “I hadn’t heard about the possibility that honey bees could use electrical fields.”

One of the honey bees’ forms of communication is the “waggle dance.” When the insects have located a dense patch of flowers or a source of water, they skitter across the honeycomb in their hive in a pattern related to the direction of and the distance to the site. When a fisherman caught a bull shark recently off the Florida Keys, he came across an unlikely surprise: One of the shark’s live fetuses had two heads.

The fisherman kept the odd specimen, and shared it with scientists, who described it in a study published online today (March 25) in the Journal of Fish Biology. It’s one of the very few examples of a two-headed shark ever recorded — there about six instances in published reports — and the first time this has been seen in a bull shark, said Michael Wagner, a study co-author and researcher at Michigan State University.

Scott Romney Considering 2014 Senate Run In Michigan: Report

The Romney name may appear on the ballot once again in 2014. Roll Call reported Friday that former presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s brother Scott is considering a run for retiring Sen. Carl Levin’s (D-Mich.) seat.

According to the report, a Michigan GOP source close to Scott RomneyMitt Romney’s older brother — has expressed interest in running. Aaron Blake of the Washington Post later reported that he had been told the same.

Scott Romney, 71, a Michigan State University and Harvard Law alumnus, currently works as a corporate attorney at the law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, LLP in Detroit. He made a public political appearance at last year’s Republican National Convention, announcing Michigan’s delegation.

Report: National parks generate $1.37B in DC area

A new report shows visitors to the national parks in the Washington area spent $1.37 billion in surrounding communities, based in 2011 data.

The National Park Service report released Tuesday is based on an analysis by Michigan State University. The report found there were 44.5 million visitors to national parks in the greater Washington area. Spending by visitors supported more than 17,000 jobs.

According to the report, the National Mall and Memorial Parks generated an economic benefit of more than $910 million. That spending came from about 24.3 million visitors in 2011. Overall, the District of Columbia saw about $1.13 billion in spending by park visitors.

National Parks in Virginia saw about 23.4 million visitors, generating $620 million. Maryland parks counted 6 million visitors and $157 million in spending.

Report: Acadia visitors add $186M to Maine economy

A new report says Acadia National Park isn’t just a pretty place to visit, it’s crucial to the region’s economy.

The National Park Service announced Tuesday that the 47,000-acre park on Maine’s coast attracted 2.4 million visitors in 2011, who created $186 million in economic benefits for the surrounding communities and helped support 3,000 jobs.

The information is part of a peer-reviewed spending analysis of national park visitors across the country conducted by Michigan State University for the National Park Service.

Superintendent Sheridan Steele says Acadia attracts visitors with its “unparalleled scenery and extraordinary recreational opportunities.”

Most visitor spending, about 63 percent, supports jobs in lodging and food service, while 17 percent is spent on recreation and entertainment.
