Straczynski and the Wachowskis Bringing "Sense8" Exclusively to Netflix

Filed under:

Netflix continues its push into original programming with supernatural series Sense8 , backed by genre veterans J. Michael Straczynski and Andy and Lana Wachowski.

Sense8, a “gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted,” will be coming exclusively to Netflix in late 2014, the company announced today.

Sense8 brings together some of the biggest names in science fiction. The Wachowskis are best known for their work on the Matrix trilogy of big-screen hits. Straczynski’s portfolio includes the Babylon 5 TV series as well as the 2011 Thor movie.

Details on the show are hard to come by, but it will involve minds connecting directly to one another across the globe.

“Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born,” said Andy and Lana Wachowski in the Netflix press release. “We’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.”

Netflix gets exclusive distribution rights to the 10-episode first season, while production duties are handled by Georgeville Television and Studio JMS. Netflix tends to publish entire seasons of its original shows, all at once. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

When You Can See the Wachowskis' Next

Warner Bros. has set an official release date for Andy and Lana Wachowski‘s upcoming science fiction film Jupiter Ascending: July 25, 2014.

Starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, the story centers on a Russian immigrant (Kunis) who scrubs toilets for a living. Unbeknownst to her, she possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her immortal rule. From there, an evolved bounty hunter (Tatum) is sent out to dispatch the cleaning lady, but they soon fall in love.

Jupiter Ascending‘s release date now pits the film against Brett Ratner’s Hercules, which has Dwayne Johnson attached to star.

Additionally, Warners has moved its boxing comedy Grudge Match from November 15, 2013, to January 10, 2014. That film stars Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro.

Wachowskis Lawsuit: ‘Matrix’ Filmmakers Sued For Allegedly Stealing Ideas

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Andy and Lana Wachowski are being sued by Thomas Althouse for allegedly using ideas from Althouse’s unproduced 1993 script “The Immortals” in “The Matrix” franchise. TMZ reports that Althouse — who didn’t see 1999’s “The Matrix” or its 2003 sequels, “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” until 2010 — is looking for $300 million in damages.

Althouse’s issue stems from similarities between “The Immortals” and “The Matrix,” though TMZ writes that it’s the second and third “Matrix” films which are the subject of the lawsuit. Althouse submitted his script in 1993, one year before the Wachowskis were signed to a deal with Warner Bros. At the time, the siblings brought two original scripts with them to the studio: “Bound” and “The Matrix.”

“The Matrix” films were a huge success for Warner Bros.; the three films grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide.
