By Giovanni Rodriguez, Contributor I’m catching up with this late in the evening, but it looks like we have a new meme.  If your are on Facebook (who isn’t?), you will of course have noticed by now.  Quick summary from The National Journal, which for some reason has taken an early interest in this story: As the Supreme Court prepares for its second day of oral arguments concerning same-sex marriage, gay rights supporters are flocking to a viral image being spread by Human Rights Campaign: its logo. HRC initially asked people to make the graphic, which was specially modified for Tuesday’s hearings, their profile picture on Facebook. But now the logo has turned into an actual, honest-to-goodness meme. It has derivatives of all kinds. Some were made by brands hoping to get in on the social action; others were created by ordinary people. The Journal does a nice job collecting variations on the theme.  The artist was not gay.  But his fanatical devotion to the arrangement of hues is testament to the simple power of color.  That’s what we are seeing today.  The simplicity of the meme is enabling people — gay and straight — to express their solidarity for a cause.  I will check in tomorrow morning; I’m sure there’ll be lots more report.  But I’ve got a feeling this meme won’t quit even after the decision from the Supremes comes in.   As I have argued before, same sex marriage may in fact be the next big item on the civil rights agenda.  In the meantime, watch carefully, if you can, as the lines are drawn. …read more
