Measuring Workforce Experience

By Forrester Research, Contributor

Over the last few months, some of us at Forrester have been wrestling with the concept that CIOs play a key role in employee engagement. All the signals point to this as hot topic. We’ve worked with many large clients on workforce technology assessments to help them understand how to assemble the right portfolio of technology tools to help employees be as productive as possible. For this research, we interviewed many technology leaders and their HR counterparts in companies that are widely recognized as great places to work that also happen to score well on customer experience. My colleague, Kerry Bodine, co-author of the book Outside-In: The Power Of  Putting  Customers At The Center Of Your Business and an expert in customer experience published a blog post in November 2012 that talked about the importance of employee empowerment and the need to design the employee experience in the same way that you design the customer experience. As Kerry puts it, “great customer experiences don’t happen by accident — they have to be actively designed.” The same is true of great employee experiences. …read more

Killing The Obamacare Zombie: Hope Lives!

By Matt Barber

Obamacare SC Killing the Obamacare Zombie: Hope Lives!

“But Republican governors are folding like cheap lawn chairs,” you say. “And political eunuchs in the GOP establishment are bowing to Obama like he bows to foreign dictators. Any hope of repeal is long dead, and besides, Chief Justice John Roberts put the final nail in the judicial coffin last summer, didn’t he? Any chance of killing the Obamacare zombie is gone, right?”

Wrong.

Not surprisingly, the mainstream media paid it little attention; but back in November, the U.S. Supreme Court shocked many in the legal community by granting Liberty Counsel’s motion for a rehearing on its multi-pronged challenge to Obamacare. The high court ordered the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rehear arguments. This is extremely rare and means, almost certainly, that Chief Justice Roberts will get another bite at the rotten apple – this time, with a whole new quiver of legal arrows.

Following the Supreme Court’s directive, Liberty Counsel recently filed its brief in the case of Liberty University v. Geithner. The Christian civil rights firm represents Liberty University and two private individuals in this case. While there are other legal challenges to the employer contraceptive/abortifacient mandate, Liberty Counsel’s is the most comprehensive case pending in the country.

The lawsuit challenges 1) the employer mandate for all employers; 2) the abortion mandate for religious employers; 3) the abortion mandate for individuals; and 4) the entire law because tax bills must originate in the House (and Obamacare originated in the Senate.)

This case is the only one in the country that challenges the entire employer mandate for all employers. Like other pending cases, Liberty Counsel’s also challenges the so-called “Preventative coverage” mandate, which requires employers to provide free contraceptives, sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and IUDs, which also causes abortion.

Additionally, Obamacare compels individual citizens to violate their conscience by making them directly fund abortion homicide – both surgical and chemical – under penalty of law. It forces all employees who are part of a plan that offers abortion coverage to pay $1 per month directly to a “free” abortion fund. There is no opt-out provision, and information relative to which plans offer abortion is intentionally covered up. This too is part of the case, so don’t let anyone tell you that Obamacare doesn’t require you to fund abortion on demand. If they do, they’re simply lying through their triple-grande,-four-pump-hazelnut-mocha-stained teeth.

Finally, Liberty Counsel’s brief argues that Obamacare is invalid because, since it’s a tax – as the Supreme Court already ruled in June – it violates the Constitution’s Origination Clause. To pass constitutional muster, tax bills must originate in the House, not the Senate.

Before the Democrat-led Senate rammed it through in the dead of night on Christmas Eve 2009, Senate majority leader Harry Reid used a House bill unrelated to Obamacare, struck all the language and the title so that only the former HR number remained, and then inserted a new title and over 2,000 pages of job-killing, economy-crushing, health-care-rationing compost.

Sneaky? Yes. Typical? No doubt. Unconstitutional? Absolutely. It’s like dropping a Ford Pinto engine into …read more

Klout Vs. Kred: Which, If Any, Is Better For Your Business?

By Scott Levy, Contributor

I’m often asked by companies who have hired us for Social media consulting “should we use something like Kred or Klout in our hiring process?” This question makes me cringe and my answer is always: absolutely not. But, and yes, there’s a but, you can use them to gain some insight as to what someone is about. It has always amazed me how quickly social media managers, HR managers and even CTO’s jump to adopt new measurement tools, analytics and data, just because someone comes out with it. …read more

Has Paychex Become the Perfect Stock?

By Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Every investor would love to stumble upon the perfect stock. But will you ever really find a stock that provides everything you could possibly want?

One thing’s for sure: You’ll never discover truly great investments unless you actively look for them. Let’s discuss the ideal qualities of a perfect stock and then decide whether Paychex fits the bill.

The quest for perfection
Stocks that look great based on one factor may prove horrible elsewhere, making due diligence a crucial part of your investing research. The best stocks excel in many different areas, including these important factors:

  • Growth. Expanding businesses show healthy revenue growth. While past growth is no guarantee that revenue will keep rising, it’s certainly a better sign than a stagnant top line.
  • Margins. Higher sales mean nothing if a company can’t produce profits from them. Strong margins ensure that company can turn revenue into profit.
  • Balance sheet. At debt-laden companies, banks and bondholders compete with shareholders for management’s attention. Companies with strong balance sheets don’t have to worry about the distraction of debt.
  • Moneymaking opportunities. Return on equity helps measure how well a company is finding opportunities to turn its resources into profitable business endeavors.
  • Valuation. You can’t afford to pay too much for even the best companies. By using normalized figures, you can see how a stock‘s simple earnings multiple fits into a longer-term context.
  • Dividends. For tangible proof of profits, a check to shareholders every three months can’t be beat. Companies with solid dividends and strong commitments to increasing payouts treat shareholders well.

With those factors in mind, let’s take a closer look at Paychex.

His Financial Goal: Dump His Bank and Join a Credit Union

By Jean Chatzky

Credit Union Bruce Watson

Everyone has things they want to improve about their financial lives — even those of us who are paid to write and think about money on a daily basis. To that end, some of the editors at AOL and Daily Finance have shared their financial goals for 2013. In return, I reached out to some experts for tips that can help these folks – and everyone who has a similar resolution – step-by-step their way toward making these goals reality.

“I want to finally pull the trigger and move my accounts to a credit union,” says Bruce. “Also, I’m going to formally put away 10 percent of every paycheck, rather than just saving all my leftover money at the end of every month.”

Here’s what Jean advises:

Step 1: Have you already landed on a credit union to use? If not, you’ll have to do a little bit of research. Bankrate.coms Greg McBride suggests checking to see if your employer is affiliated with one; if not, he says alumni associations, your community and your family might be a great way to get a good suggestion. If word-of-mouth isn’t your thing, the National Credit Union Administration has a look-up tool that you can access here.

Step 2: Once you’ve decided on a credit union and have opened the new accounts, make sure you change the direct deposit information for all your bills. Just to be safe — and to make sure you haven’t forgotten about a gym membership with a quarterly charge — leave your old account open for at least three months before you completely close it.

Step 3: As for your savings goal, if you’ve heard it before, you’ll hear it again, and again: If you want to hit that 10 percent mark every month, automate the savings process. Better yet, head to HR with the account number, routing number and bank info of the account you want to receive this 10 percent. They’ll deduct it right from your paycheck, so you’ll never even see the money (and be tempted to use it).

HR Starts with Communications and Collaboration

By Dan Schuster, AdVoice

HR has ostensibly been all about attracting, onboarding, retaining, and developing staff. But at its core, HR has, almost secretly, been about communication and collaboration. Effective communication and collaboration helps companies attract prospective hires, establish numbers-driven performance reviews, give employees a sense of how they can grow their careers, and so on. And, rapid advances in the way people engage with one another has shed new light on the subject. Today’s employee is one of a connected, social world. The ease by which staff can now connect with one another via social-networking tools like Twitter and Facebook has brought similar expectations to the tools they use in the workplace. For HR technology, in particular, these new expectations have meant a newfound push for connectedness. And at Microsoft, we want to help you unlock social, organization, and operational intelligence that inspires innovation, interaction, and collaboration. You need a central source from which all interactions take place. …read more

The New HR Manager: Moving from Administrative to Strategic

By Dan Schuster, AdVoice

Nobody likes doing busy work, at least not anyone I have ever run into. And in HR departments, busy work can many times be an all-too common occurrence. Because of inefficient technology (like various, point solutions), many HR professionals are forced to spend much of their time on administrative tasks, rather than strategic HR initiatives. So what can businesses do about this? Well, aside from standardizing on a single platform and reaping the efficiencies inherent  in that, the answer to that question is to provide employees and manager across the company with self-service tools.  The workforce should be able to update address, phone number, and other personal information through an easy-to-use Web portal without needing HR staff to intervene. They should also be able to view and manage their benefits as well as apply for jobs, register for courses, maintain performance goals, enter and approve absences, and file their expenses. These are, of course, all widely understood needs. But what often goes overlooked when forging forward with employee self-service is the importance of ease of use. There is no sense in providing so-called self-service capabilities to employees, if no one can figure the system out—everyone will just end of on the phone with HR again. And to that end, Microsoft technology is familiar and easy to use. …read more

What is Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime?

Here’s a thing about indie development that’s pretty darned ace. The way these guys cobble their games together with stringy bits of cultural detritus, lost weekends at game-jams, vaguely appropriate skill-mishmashings and on-the-fly working relationships that just flourish without the aid of a HR minder or a mission-statement.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a cracking example of this binding together of illogical, ill-fitting parts into something completely coherent. It’s set on a Death Star-type craft, but the colors are more Powerpuff Girls than brooding space-opera. Its major influences range from Space Battleship Yamato and Sailor Moon to Canadian folk music and Jean-Luc Picard. Game-wise it’s part Asteroids, part Jumpman and part Katamari Damarcy.
