Oracle's Mark Hurd talks Fusion Applications, customer satisfaction and SAP's HANA

As co-president of Oracle, Mark Hurd is tasked with selling an ever-increasing array of new software and hardware products, such as the Exadata database machine and Fusion Applications, while figuring out how to keep the company’s vast installed base happy and fending off competition from the likes of SAP.

Hurd spoke to IDG News Service on a variety of topics during an interview at the Collaborate user group conference in Denver. What follows is an edited transcript of that conversation.

IDGNS: Oracle has said there are more than 400 customers of Fusion Applications, which became generally available in October 2011. Are you happy with the rate of Fusion Applications adoption?

Hurd: We sort of think of it in different categories. If we went to HCM [human capital management], we think we’re doing quite well. In terms of cloud, SaaS deals, we think we’re winning all deals internationally in HCM. We think we’re doing quite well now in the U.S. We’ve got a great team, our product is maturing, we’ve got lots of go-lives, references, etcetera. In sales automation, we have a tougher competitor. We’ve made a number of acquisitions in the social space. We’re integrating those into sales automation. We’re going to market later with that product than with HCM, and that’s the place where we’re really driving hard for more business. We don’t typically think of Fusion Apps as a single thing. We think of it more in these various pillars.

Ping Identity Increases Efficiencies, Improves Overall Business Results with Ultimate Software’s UltiPro

WESTON, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Ultimate Software (NAS: ULTI) , a leading cloud provider of people management solutions, announced today that Ping Identity®, The Identity Security Company™, has selected UltiPro to unify its HR operations, improve reporting capabilities, increase efficiencies, and enhance ease of use for its employees.

Before UltiPro, Ping Identity was handling many of its HR processes manually and using a payroll system that could not accommodate the company’s rapid growth, need for business intelligence, and workforce analytics. The security company also used a separate benefits system that didn’t interface with other systems, so the HR team had to maintain and reconcile data in multiple places. Ping Identity selected Ultimate’s cloud-based UltiPro in December 2012 to automate its end-to-end processes for HCM, and executives are enthusiastic about the business results already achieved.

“We were using accounting software that wasn’t designed for payroll. This kind of system worked when we were smaller, but we have been doubling our workforce every year for the last three years,” said Melissa Grandchamp, director of HR at Ping Identity. “We no longer have to ‘duct tape’ five systems together. UltiPro is a holistic solution that handles a full range of U.S. and international HCM requirements. We’re thrilled with UltiPro’s robust functionality and its ease of use.”

Ping Identity started its initial rollout of UltiPro in April 2013 and plans to expand its use of UltiPro to benefit its entire multinational workforce.

“We’re excited about Ultimate’s recent announcement about its partnership with global payroll provider Celergo. Because we have employees in five countries, the Ultimate-Celergo partnership will allow us to bring all of our global information together in UltiPro,” said Grandchamp. “UltiPro is our single global system of record, and we expect significant improvements in our reporting and employee experience.”

In April 2012, Ultimate and Ping Identity also announced a partnership that enables Ultimate’s customers to select PingOne™, its Identity-as-a-Service, to provide their end users with a secure, cloud-based, single sign-on (SSO) connection to UltiPro and other business applications. Ping Identity’s solution is now available directly from Ultimate as an option in customers’ SaaS subscription.

“Activities like manual reconciliation and duplication among disparate systems undermine productivity and engagement, which can be especially detrimental when a company is experiencing sizable expansion,” said Greg Swick, chief sales officer at Ultimate Software. “Because UltiPro provides a unified, end-to-end HCM solution with

10,000-Employee Airline Leverages UltiPro’s Business Intelligence for Strategic and Operational HR Improvements

WESTON, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Ultimate Software (NAS: ULTI) , a leading cloud provider of people management solutions, announced today that Republic Airways Holdings Inc. (NAS: RJET) , an airline holding company that owns Chautauqua Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Republic Airlines, and Shuttle America, is using UltiPro’s capabilities for business intelligence to generate analytics for strategic decision-making and forecasting, automate critical communications and reports necessary for compliance and audits, and make significant improvements to its overall HCM operations.

An Ultimate customer since 2005, Republic Airways has grown to 10,000 employees. With its large employee population, Republic’s HR teams and executives needed visibility into their workforce from a companywide perspective as well as access to employee metrics for fast and accurate insights on specific elements of the business. According to Jon Clahan, manager of HR shared services at Republic Airways, the company is using UltiPro to analyze turnover and employee demographics, and as a result, has made improvements to talent acquisition, re-evaluated its processes for performance management, and implemented succession plans to avoid talent shortages.

“The airline industry is highly regulated, and one of these regulations requires that pilots stop flying after age 65. With UltiPro, we have been able to identify employees who will be retiring and when they will retire. This allows Republic to ramp up hiring when appropriate so we can better fill vacancies that could have a negative impact on the business,” said Clahan. “Our executives have dashboards in UltiPro to more easily and accurately monitor these kinds of trends, and then we can make the best adjustments and decisions for our multiple businesses.”

Republic is using UltiPro to automatically deliver dozens of reports used every day by stakeholders across the organization. Clahan also has created a series of reports to handle most daily requests for information. For example, Republic’s HR team and leaders may need historical workforce information because airline regulations often require manpower data that may be date-specific and relevant to all employees or that is only relevant to a specific group of employees. With UltiPro, Clahan is better positioned to immediately address a full range of reporting needs.

“Information really can be put into almost any system, but what sets UltiPro apart from other HCM platforms is the solution’s ability to enable people to easily extract information and then deliver it to our teams or decision makers …read more
