'Fifty Shades' makes list of challenged books

Here’s a list “Fifty Shades of Grey” was destined to make: The books most likely to be removed from school and library shelves.

On Monday, E L James’ multimillion selling erotic trilogy placed No. 4 on the American Library Association‘s annual study of “challenged books,” works subject to complaints from parents, educators and other members of the public. The objections: Offensive language, and, of course, graphic sexual content.

No. 1 was a not a story of the bedroom, but the bathroom, Dav Pilkey’s “Captain Underpants” books (Offensive language, unsuited for age group), followed by Sherman Alexie‘s prize-winning “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” (Offensive language, racism, sexually explicit), and Jay Asher’s “Thirteen Reasons Why”(Drugs/alcohol/smoking, sexually explicit, suicide). Also on the list, at No. 10, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison’s “Beloved” (Sexually explicit, religious viewpoint, violence).

“It’s pretty exciting to be on a list that frequently features Mark Twain, Harper Lee, and Maya Angelou,” Pilkey said in a statement. “But I worry that some parents might see this list and discourage their kids from reading ‘Captain Underpants,’ even though they have not had a chance to read the books themselves.”

The library association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom defines a challenge as a “formal, written complaint filed with a library or school requesting that a book or other material be restricted or removed because of its content or appropriateness.” The office received 464 challenges last year, a jump of more 25 percent from 2011, but still low compared to the 1980s and ’90s. Exact numbers, including how many books were actually pulled, are hard to calculate. The association has long believed that for every complaint registered, 4-5 go unreported by libraries, and that some librarians may restrict access in anticipation of objections.

“One reason we think the number went up in 2012 is that we made challenges easier to report by including a portal on our Web page,” said Barbara M. Jones, director of the OIF.

The challenged books list was included in the library association’s annual “State of the Libraries” report (http://tinyurl.com/salr2013) which examines how libraries are responding to budget cuts and the financial advice they offer for patrons during hard economic times.

The “Fifty Shades” books were released last spring and public libraries in Georgia, Florida and elsewhere soon pulled the racy romance trilogy or decided not to order the books, saying they were too steamy or too poorly written. Local library representatives at the time denounced the

Women deny hiding gun seized in Georgia baby killing

The mother and older sister of a coastal Georgia teenager charged with killing a baby last month are pleading not guilty to charges that they tried to dispose of a gun police believe was used in the slaying.

The Brunswick News reports that Karimah Elkins and her 19-year-old daughter, Sabrina Elkins, entered written pleas Friday. Both are charged with evidence tampering in the case against 18-year-old De’Marquise (deh-mahr-KEESE) Elkins. He faces a malice murder charge and other counts in the March 21 slaying of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in coastal Brunswick.

An indictment accuses the two Elkins women of disposing of a .22-caliber pistol in a small saltwater pond where it was later found by police. The gun is being tested to determine whether it matches the weapon that killed the child.

Where The Foreclosure Crisis Is Still Booming

By Morgan Brennan, Forbes Staff

Nationally, foreclosure activity continues to decline, according to RealtyTrac, an Irvine, Calif.-based foreclosure listing site. In March the number of filings fell 1% from February and 21% from a year earlier, and home repossessions hit their lowest level in five and a half years. The national level declines have been driven by dramatic decreases in areas long considered foreclosure hot spots like California, Arizona, Georgia and Michigan.

Police: firefighter hostage-taker gave no signs of compromise

When a gunman took four firefighters hostage in his Georgia home, police tried to buy time and create a rapport by meeting his initial demands. But when his demands became unreasonable and negotiations seemed to go nowhere, police said, officers stormed the house and killed him after he fired on them.

Authorities on Thursday provided new details on Wednesday’s hostage-taking north of Atlanta, including how the suspect — 55-year-old Lauren Brown — lured firefighters to his home.

Meanwhile, some who knew Brown said he’d suffered from disabling medical problems and was struggling financially, and that he had lived across the street from his ex-wife and her new family.

Gwinnett County Police Chief Charles Walters said Brown called 911 complaining of chest pains Wednesday afternoon, and five Gwinnett County firefighters arrived at 3:48 p.m., believing it was a routine call. Brown was lying in bed and appeared to be suffering from a condition that left him unable to move. But when they approached the bed to help him, he pulled out a handgun, Walters said.

Brown told his hostages he had spent weeks planning the ambush and targeted firefighters rather than police officers so he wouldn’t be shot, Walters said. Investigators found half a dozen guns in his house.

One of Brown’s first demands was to move the fire truck and ambulance from in front of his house, and he released one firefighter to accomplish that, police said.

Next he asked that power be restored to his house, which was in foreclosure; that his cellphone be reactivated; and that his cable and Internet service be turned back on. Police checked and learned that those services had all been deactivated due to non-payment. They worked with the utilities and companies to get them turned back on.

Then Brown asked for a meal to be brought in from a fast-food seafood restaurant for him and his hostages. But he had also asked police to bring tools and wood and to board up the windows and doors of his house from the outside.

“That was the one we couldn’t realistically meet,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith said, adding that they didn’t want to fortify Brown inside with the hostages.

Instead, a SWAT officer carrying the food approached the house in Suwanee, about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Other SWAT members set off a stun blast to distract Brown and stormed the house. Police said Brown opened fire on the first officer as he entered the bedroom. The man was hit in the left arm by one of the shots, but managed to return fire, killing Brown. Before Brown fired, police told him to drop his weapon, Walters said.

Thursday, it wasn’t immediately clear why Brown had lashed out. Brown had separated from his wife years earlier, but he had lived across the street from her, her new husband and his two children, according to neighbors and people who knew the family.

“We knew he wasn’t quite normal, but this is a real shock,” said David Books, a former colleague of Brown’s and a friend until they

Spring storm that killed 3 moving to the Carolinas

A powerful spring storm that brought tornadoes, hail and high winds to the Deep South after socking the Midwest is making its way toward the Carolinas early Friday, with three deaths blamed on the rough weather and thousands of people without power.

The storm marched from Louisiana to Georgia on Thursday, causing major damage to parts of Mississippi, where a twister was spotted and one person was killed. Tennessee authorities late Thursday declared a state of emergency after a tornado was reported in Monroe County, in the southeastern part of that state.

While tornado watches for the Atlanta area had been lifted by early Friday, they remained in effect in for parts of the Carolinas.

Indiana Court Calls Protection of Private Property “Tenet of American Life”

BRYN MAWR, Pa.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The Indiana Supreme Court today ruled that government does not have the unchecked right to determine the value of private property taken for public use, and that an Aqua America subsidiary is entitled to have the fair value of its infrastructure established by a jury.

The case involves infrastructure that served a portion of Fort Wayne and Allen County, Indiana. The City of Fort Wayne condemned the water utility in 2002 and unilaterally established a purchase price based on two appraisals that it commissioned. Aqua appealed this decision and sought to have the ability to present its view of the value of the property seized by the taking and requested that a jury decide what the fair value of the property was at the time of the City’s use of eminent domain. Today, the Indiana Supreme Court agreed with Aqua’s positions and allowed it the ability to present its side of the story.

Aqua America Chairman and CEO Nicholas DeBenedictis said the company is considering its options and hopes to avoid returning to court. Nonetheless, the decision justifies its persistence. “Although we don’t normally sell assets,” DeBenedictis said, “when we do, we will fight to get fair value.”

Aqua America‘s corporate counsel Christopher Luning said the company is pleased to have played a role in establishing case law that gives vital protection to land and property owners. “The highest court in Indiana has rendered a national victory for private property rights. It assures citizens have a voice in such a powerful use of government authority,” Luning said.

Aqua America is one of the largest U.S.-based, publicly-traded water utilities and serves almost 3 million people in Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, Indiana, Virginia, and Georgia. Aqua America is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WTR. Visit www.aquaamerica.com for more information.

Disabled vet, service dog, reportedly kicked out of Georgia gun store

A disabled war veteran injured in Afghanistan says he was kicked out of a Georgia gun store after bringing in his service dog.

MyFoxAtlanta.com reports that Russ Murray was escorted out of Clyde’s Armory in Bogart when the shop owner allegedly accused his service dog, Ellie, of causing a disturbance.

Murray told the station that gun shop owner Andrew Clyde said Ellie was disturbing his security dog, Kit. Murray was escorted out after refusing to leave the store.

“I was just extremely hurt,” Murray told MyFoxAtlanta.com. “I have this animal to help me when I’m out and it really disturbing that a business would do that when she’s there to help me go into public.”

Clyde told the station that under the Americans With Disabilities Act, a business owner is allowed to ask a customer with a service dog to leave if the dog is being disruptive.

He said he’s also a disabled veteran and understands Murray’s needs but cannot allow his security job to be distracted to the point that it prevents her from doing her job, according to the report.

John Beasley, Murray’s attorney, told the station that businesses are required to make accommodations and could have brought the merchandise outside.

“The issue is whether or not he was accommodated for a service dog and clearly he wasn’t, and that’s a violation of the law,” Beasley told MyFoxAtlanta.com.

Attorney wants separate trials in Ga. baby killing

The defense attorney for a 15-year-old charged with felony murder in a baby’s slaying in Georgia says he should be tried separately from an older teen accused of shooting the toddler in the face.

Attorney Kimberly L. Copeland said Tuesday she believes her client, Dominique Lang, is “more of a witness than a defendant.”

Copeland says she’s afraid Lang would automatically be found guilty if the same jury also chose to convict 17-year-old De’Marquise (deh-mahr-KEESE) Elkins. Authorities say he was the gunman.

Both teenagers are charged in coastal Brunswick with the March 21 slaying of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago, who was shot in the face as he sat in his stroller. Police say the baby and his mother were attacked in an attempted street robbery.
