Andrew Mason may be gone, but the deals keep coming at Groupon. Right now, the site has one of those national deals that sell like mad: A $10 Starbucks gift card for $5. Groupon customers have already bought more than 100,000 of the deals, but it doesn’t appear that quantities are limited. You do, however, need to make your purchase by 1 a.m. Sunday morning. Once you do, you have until Sept. 30 to redeem the voucher and get your Starbucks Card eGift.

BeFrugal.com points us to a limited-time deals at Stride Rite: Buy any item and get a second (of equal or lesser value) for 50 percent off. Select brands, such as Crocs, Converse and Ugg, are excluded. The offer is good through Sunday at 11:59 p.m. EDT; you can get it in stores or online, though if you’re shopping online you’ll need to remember to use the coupon code SPRINGBOGO. See the site for the full terms and conditions.

Freebie Finding Mom reminds us that Denny’s is once again celebrating Baconalia, its annual bacon event. As part of its celebration, it’s offering a coupon for two free strips of bacon when you share a status about the event and then punch in your name and email address. We’re still waiting for our coupon to arrive, but according to this post in the SlickDeals forum, it’s only good with a minimum entrĂ©e purchase of $2.50, so you can’t just go in and grab some free bacon without ordering anything else.

Redbox is holding its own March Madness event, with a bracket of movie rentals. When you sign up to use the Facebook app, you can earn points by voting on movie matchups to decide the best new release on Redbox. The more points you earn, the more promo codes for free rentals you can earn. Note, though, that you need to earn at least 5,000 points just to get one free rental, and voting in all five rounds only nets you 3,000 points. So if you actually want to get enough points for a free movie rental, you’ll need to do things like share the contest on Facebook, invite friends, and sign up for text and email updates. Seeing as a one-day rental only costs $1.20, it might not be worth the trouble, unless you really enjoy brackets.

US pockets of protest persist after years of war

A decade after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, small groups of people across the country still carry signs to voice their opposition to the U.S.-led wars across the world.

Even though the war in Iraq officially ended in 2011, the war in Afghanistan continues.

Every Friday in Vermont’s capital, a small group of protesters gathers in front of the post office. There are also protests in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California and other states.

Sixty-four-year-old John Snell of Montpelier says the protests are a reminder for everyone that the wars are still going on.

Car bombs hit markets in Iraq, killing 20 people

Four car bombs struck two outdoor markets in Baghdad and a town south of the Iraqi capital on Friday, killing at least 20 people and wounding dozens, officials said.

The blasts were the latest in a series of attacks by insurgents seeking to re-ignite sectarian violence and undermine the Shiite-led government‘s efforts in maintaining security.

The bombings targeted an outdoor pet market in Baghdad‘s northern Kazimyah neighborhood and in a vegetable market in the town of Shomali in Hillah province, south of the Iraqi capital.

Every Friday, Iraqis converge on markets to shop and spend family time during the Muslim weekend. Markets are a frequent target for militants who seek to inflict large numbers of casualties.

In Baghdad, the first car bomb exploded around mid-morning at the entrance to the Kazimyah market, two police officers said. When panicked shoppers tried to flee the area, a second parked car exploded a few meters (yards) away, according to the officers.

At least 14 people were killed and 42 were wounded in the two blasts, police said. All the victims were civilians.

About an hour later, two car bombs exploded simultaneously at the Shomali market, killing at least six people and wounding 15, two police officers said.

Health officials confirmed the casualty figures in each attack. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Despite a drop in violence since the worst sectarian fighting in 2006-2007, insurgents carry out near-daily attacks on security forces and civilians in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

Two police officers say a bomb hidden in a box went off at a pet market Friday in northern Kazimyah area. In a second blast, a parked car exploded.

A health official confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to release information.
