The Showdown Effect Review

The Showdown Effect gave me something I never knew I wanted, but now can’t live without: Godzilla boxing a towering silhouette of a featureless hulk man in the background of a level. Once, during one of the side-scrolling, Quake 3: Arena-meets-Super-Smash-Bros matches, I just stopped in place to watch the action unfold. The man clearly had Godzilla against the ropes, cracking his scaly chin with crisp uppercuts that sent the lord of all lizards backpedaling. But then, as is his wont, Godzilla put down his comparatively diminutive dukes and unleashed a mouth beam of radioactive green. It was quite the spectacle, and it was obvious Magicka developer Arrowhead had put some real thought into it. It made me want to see more. Do more. But alas, that’s all there was to it. Window dressing. Flat cardboard cutouts. I’d say the same of The Showdown Effect as a whole: lots of love, but very little depth.

Fire Emblem Awakening: Recruiting Roy

Last Thursday another new piece of Fire Emblem Awakening DLC was released (check out my full review of Awakening to find out why you should care). Called Champions of Yore 2, this new pack allows players to recruit Roy, yet another legendary hero from FE‘s illustrious past. Gamers outside Japan probably best know Roy as one of the playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Take a look at the new DLC below, then check it out for yourself by visitng Outrealm Gate (this opens up after you’ve reached Chapter 5). Enjoy!

Smash Bros Wii U, 3DS Will Both Be at E3

Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that both versions of the next Super Smash Bros. game will be at E3 2013. Following yesterday’s announcement during Nintendo Direct that Smash Bros. will make an appearance at the show, Sakurai has now clarified the news on Twitter.

According to a rough translation, Sakurai says “Wii U and 3DS versions — I would like to show you both.” He then explains that “Other games have had visuals shown, but you still have to wait for Smash Bros. But we’ll be able to release something better.” Sakurai apologizes that the production of the game was announced so far in advance but says that there will be more things coming, so fans should be ready.

Smash Bros, Mario, Mario Kart Will Debut at E3 2013

Nintendo has confirmed that the next Super Smash Bros. game, a new 3D Mario game and a Mario Kart for Wii U will all make their debut at E3 2013.

During a Nintendo Direct conference this morning, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said he’s aware that Nintendo fans have been waiting for more news on the next Smash Bros. game and confirmed that the “first screens” will be shown at E3. Iwata said development is “on track” for both Wii U and 3DS and asked fans to “wait just a little bit longer” for their first look at the ambitious sequel.

Iwata also announced a new 3D Mario game for Wii U in development from EAD Tokyo, the team that previously developed Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land. Iwata said the game is an “action game” and will be playable at E3. On top of that, Iwata revealed that a new Mario Kart game is in development for Wii U as well, and will also be playable at the show.
