Ailing sea lion pup checks in to California hotel

One very thirsty sea lion pup reportedly waddled into a California hotel Wednesday, where it proceeded to take a seat at the patio bar.

The pup reportedly walked from a nearby beach all the way “across the street, up the cobblestone driveway and onto a plush lounge chair in the hotel’s open pavilion,” according to AFP.

“I got an email saying that we had a sea lion pup lounging on our patio,” said Shane Pappas, manager of the Pantai Inn in La Jolla.

The ailing sea lion pup reportedly was dehydrated and malnourished. Rescuers from SeaWorld San Diego picked her up from the hotel and brought her back to the park, where wildlife experts administered fluids and fed her from a tube, AFP reports.

SeaWorld will reportedly monitor the pup for six weeks and then re-release her into the wild.

North Korea Marine Landing Photoshop: AFP Pulls Photo, Cites Evidence Of Tampering

By The Huffington Post News Editors

North Korea‘s rhetoric might be getting increasingly bellicose, but it’s now being undercut by what might be a Photoshop gaffe.

The Agence France Presse recently released a photo from North Korean state media that appears to depict hovercraft at a beach on the country’s east coast and marines during a training exercise on March 25.

The Atlantic Wire’s Alan Taylor stumbled across the image while researching a story about North Korea‘s recent war threats and brought it to the attention of AFP, claiming that “at least two, possibly three hovercraft appear to have been pasted into the scene.”

Indonesia Offers ‘World-First’ Home For Transgender Elderly

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A dozen elderly women are gathered inside the pink house, set on a narrow dirt road in a dusty suburb of Jakarta. Together they sew, bake and chat.

On first sight they look like a group of benevolent grandmothers, but the sunken cheeks and deep lines on some of their faces tell stories of hardship.

All of these women are “waria”, a term used for Indonesian transgender people, and the house in the country’s capital has been hailed by activists as the first old person’s home for that gender community.

The word waria combines the Indonesian for woman (wanita) and the word for man (pria).

It is used to describe a range of gender identities, though it particularly refers to men who feel they are women and is applied regardless of whether they have undergone gender reassignment surgery or hormone therapy.

A home for elderly waria is an unexpected sight but perhaps also typical of the many contradictions in a nation where, until two years ago, the official government line on transgender people was that they were mentally ill.

As part of new moves towards acceptance, the government will in March begin supporting the home, which officially opened in November, with a basic nutrition programme while offering business seed money to 200 transgender residents in the city.

However, most of the funds needed to support the home will continue to come from its founder, Yulianus Rettoblaut, a waria and prominent activist better-known as Mami Yuli, who turned her own house into the shelter last year.

“We are focusing on elderly waria because NGOs usually focus on young ones,” the 51-year-old told AFP.

She was inspired to take action after seeing many of her fellow ageing waria on the streets, ill, unemployed and forced to live in squalid conditions.

While a few waria have found domestic celebrity as talk show hosts or emcees, most across Southeast Asia‘s biggest nation of 240 million people are cast out by relatives who would otherwise be responsible for the care of their elderly family members.

“Life for them is very difficult and many live under the poverty line. They often have no choice but to sleep under bridges,” Mami Yuli said.

While the home is grossly underfunded, she tries to offer three daily meals to residents who learn sewing, baking and hairdressing if they are jobless.

Conditions are far from ideal — the 12 waria who live there sleep on old mattresses crammed into one bedroom at the top of steep, narrow stairs.

When Mami Yuli fails to raise the 350,000 rupiah ($36) a day needed to run the house, she organises street performances where the residents of the home sing and dance. Despite their age they are expected to work to make a living if they can.

A devout Catholic, Mami Yuli says that 70 churches in Jakarta support the home, offering shelter during floods. Only four donate money.

Despite the huge challenges, she hopes to one day be able to accommodate all 800 of Jakarta’s elderly waria and expand her home into the vacant lot next door, if she …read more

Japanese city devastated by tsunami receives gift of gold worth $250,000

A Japanese port city that was hit by the 2011 tsunami last week received anonymous parcels containing gold worth more than $250,000, the AFP reported.

The mystery gift is being called a “goodwill gold rush” ahead of the second anniversary of the disaster.

The president of the company that runs the port in the northeastern city of Ishinomaki received a parcel containing two slabs of gold each weighing 1 kilogram, or about 2 pounds, according to AFP.

“Since it was labeled as ‘miscellaneous goods,’ I casually opened the box,” Kunio Sunow, president of the Ishinomaki Fish Market, told AFP.

“I was stunned because what’s in there was 24k gold in two plates. One was wrapped in brown paper and the other in a page taken from a magazine — both were sitting in bubble sheets,” he said.

Study Reveals Why Pilots’ Farts Can Be Dangerous

By Matt Cantor Need to pass gas on a plane? No worries—assuming you’re a passenger, says an oddball new study. In fact, researchers encourage you to go right ahead: Pressure changes associated with flying do indeed make us more gassy, and holding it means potential indigestion and heartburn, AFP reports. If you’re a pilot, however, you might want to think twice about letting one go. The “co-pilot may be affected by its odor, which … reduces safety onboard the flight,” the authors—five European gastroenterologists—say.

Pilot Farts But it’s a bit of a conundrum, since holding it in could result in the aforementioned unpleasant effects for the pilot. The study, published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, weighed in on other flatulence-related topics: It found, for instance, that women’s farts are smellier than men’s, and that sulfur is at the root of the bad smell. Researchers also discovered a hidden benefit to sitting in economy class: The textile seat covers absorb up to half a fart’s smell; first-class leather seats offer no such advantage.
