Retail discounts available to those 50+ years old

DiscountsKeep this list and send a copy to your senior friends and relatives.
As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy’s recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 get 10% off everything on the menu, every day.
Being of ‘that’ age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too.
This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and howsome of them start at the young age of 50 .
This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family too.
Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55 .
If you’re paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for FREE.

Interesting Polish custom celebrating the beginning of Spring

Pagan Roots

In every culture, where the winter is harsh and long, people eagerly await the arrival of spring and Drowning of Marzanna Effigysearch for its signs. In Poland, the return of the beloved storks from warmer climates is one such sign and precipitates preparations for the Drowning of Marzanna (topienie Marzanny), also known as the Frost Maiden and Winter Witch. This holdover from pagan times used to take place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, but these days takes place on the first day of spring — March 21. It’s a chance to symbolically “kill” or bury winter and welcome in spring, rebirth, new crops and the warmth of the sun.

The Marzanna, symbolizing winter, death, disease, starvation and all evil, is a braided straw female effigy dressed in white or local folk costumes, and adorned with beads (coral in the south of Poland and amber in central and northern Poland) and ribbons. In Silesia, she is dressed in a beautiful wedding dress with a wreath on her head. Some villagers still carry the Marzanna from house to house. Eventually, she is drowned in a river, pond, lake or simply a big bucket of water. Sometimes, before dousing her, the effigy is set on fire. As the marzanna is carried out of the village, others carry in green branches adorned with ribbons, beads and flowers representing spring. These days, however, the Drowning of Marzanna has become an excuse to party and for children to play hooky from school.

In the late 1990s, the Polish Department of Education declared March 21 a school holiday known as Truant’s Day. While there are no regular classes, school activities are organized and students are allowed to wear masks, funny costumes and generally act silly.

Dropbox buys Audiogalaxy. Is a cloud music service on the way?

Online file sync and storage service Dropbox has acquired Audiogalaxy, a peer-to-peer file sharing utility turned online music streaming service. The move suggests some form of media streaming is coming to Dropbox, based on the acquisition announcement from Audiogalaxy. “We are excited about the opportunity to join the amazing folks at Dropbox and bring great new experiences to 100M+ Dropbox users,” the Seattle-based streaming service said on its blog. Financial details were not revealed.

It’s not clear what the Audiogalaxy team will be doing once it joins Dropbox. The company’s current service allows you to stream your music collection from a mobile device via remote connection to your own computer at home. That’s very different from services such as Google Music, which require you to upload your music collection to a remote server and then access it from anywhere via your mobile device.

Audiogalaxy’s mention of “great new experiences” for Dropbox users suggests the company was purchased specifically for its media streaming expertise. Dropbox doesn’t advertise it very much, but the service already offers limited media streaming. You can, for example, stream music tracks one at a time, as well as stream video using Dropbox’s mobile apps. For complete access to playlists and albums you need to use a third-party media player connected to Dropbox.

The best Windows 8 video apps for tile-loving cord cutters

Every app store has its bleak and early days, when quality apps are rare, buried in heaps of throw-it-against-the-wall-to-see-what-sticks, fart apps, poorly coded abominations, and general dreck. The iTunes App Store had them. The Play Store—formerly Android Market—had them. The Window Store, well, it’s dredged in those early days right now—but video apps are a shining star amongst the quagmire.

The modern UI beating at the heart of all Windows 8 and Windows RT apps ensures a similar experience across all of the apps you’ll find in the Windows Store, making them simple and clean and designed to run full-screen. For many types of content, this isn’t ideal. For video, it’s perfect.

Here are seven Windows 8 video apps that don’t suck. Your mileage shouldn’t vary.

Texas man dead after bin is emptied into trash compactor

A 41-year-old man has died of injuries received when the garbage bin in which he was sleeping was emptied into a trash compactor in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth police say the man apparently was seeking shelter from the cold early Wednesday morning when a garbage truck lifted the bin in which he was sleeping and emptied it into its compactor. Officer Sharron Neal says workers stopped the contractor when the man began to scream. He was in cardiac arrest when he was removed but revived. He died later while having surgery at John Peter Smith Hospital.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Chad Adams and said he died of crush injuries to his pelvis.

Pennsylvania pair charged in 'nightmare' dog-fight ring

Authorities say a suburban Philadelphia couple ran a dog-fighting ring at their home that killed at least 10 dogs and maimed many more.

Chester County officials announced Wednesday that animal cruelty charges have been filed against Shane Santiago and Laura Acampora of West Brandywine.

They also face child endangerment counts because five children lived with them.

Officials began investigating after two abused dogs were found along area roads. The Daily Local News reports neighbors had also complained about suspicious activity at the house.

District Attorney Thomas Hogan described the home as “a nightmare.” He says six dogs recovered from the property were turned over to animal welfare officials.

The suspects are being held in county prison. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers.

Massachusetts man accused of fake medical examinations

A Salisbury man has been charged with pretending to be a medical professional so he could recruit young women for invasive medical exams that he secretly videotaped.

Prosecutors also allege 44-year-old David E. Anderson, who has a home in Newtown, Conn., secretly videotaped nude adolescent female relatives.

The Newburyport Daily News reports Anderson was held on $500,000 bail at his arraignment Monday on charges of unlawfully recording a nude or partially nude person and possession of child pornography.

Police say Anderson recruited women through Craigslist and offered money to be examined by medical students for research. Instead, Anderson conducted what he called preliminary examinations.

Authorities say Anderson may have fooled at least 20 women over several years.

His court-appointed attorney said bail was excessive and his client is not a flight risk.

Aliens: Colonial Marines – Elegant Monsters

Recognisable but monstrous. Organic yet mechanical. H.R. Giger’s original Xenomorph is life at its most brutal and basic – the snarling embodiment of those twinned Darwinian impulses to survive and reproduce. It remains the most elegant of movie monsters.
A hissing, savage mouth concealed an even more vicious set of jaws. A long serrated tail provided balance and poise, yet also functioned as a cruelly effective harpoon. It’s blood was concentrated acid, capable of burning through floors and flesh: the perfect defence mechanism. But through the translucent dome that formed its otherworldly head, you could see something even more terrifying: a human skull. It served as a disturbing reminder that cinema’s most famous alien wasn’t entirely extra-terrestrial. It was the child of an unholy union, born to man and those he found waiting amongst the stars.

Check Out Neverwinter’s Chasm Zone

The launch of Cryptic’s in-development Dungeons & Dragons-based MMO Neverwinter isn’t all that far away now. It’s currently scheduled to be released sometime in early 2013 and will be free-to-play.
While Neverwinter’s Foundry system will no doubt result in the creation and distribution of lots of player-made content, there’ll also be plenty of Cryptic-made quests to play through. Some of those quests will take place within the Chasm map, a major adventure zone filled with monsters obsessed with trying to invade and raze the city of Neverwinter. You’ll find a preview video of the Chasm zone below.
