30 protesters indicted for seizing Thai airports

Thirty members of a protest movement have been indicted for seizing Bangkok’s two airports in 2008 during political chaos that left Thailand bitterly divided.

Prosecutors said the members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, also known as Yellow Shirts, and their TV station were charged Thursday with terrorism, violation of an emergency decree and other offenses. Terrorism is a capital offense.

All of the suspects are free on bail.

The protesters occupied the airports for about 10 days to demand the resignation of the government, which was allied with ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Also in 2008, they occupied the prime minister’s office compound and blocked access to Parliament.

Officials have been criticized for delays in prosecuting the Yellow Shirt protesters, compared to rapid indictments of “Red Shirt” demonstrators who supported Thaksin.

Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness #1 Review

By Jesse Schedeen

Is there such a thing as a tie-in project being too integral to a movie? If so, Star Trek: Countdown certainly qualifies. IDW‘s prequel comic to the 2009 Star Trek reboot did a great job of shedding light on Nero’s back-story and the origins of his feud with Spock and the Vulcan Empire. The problem was that too little of that background material made it into the actual film. Nero was a poorly defined enigma unless viewers had the experience of the comic to draw upon.

For better or worse, it doesn’t appear that IDW‘s similarly conceived Star Trek Into Darkness prequel will have the same integral relationship to its source material. Countdown to Darkness reunites some of the gang from Countdown. Roberto Orci and Mike Johnson plotted the series, Johnson scripted it, and David Messina once again illustrates it. In its first issue, Countdown Into Darkness plays out pretty much like any random episode of the old TV series. The Enterprise crew arrive at their latest intergalactic destination, a routine mission develops a complication, and a handful of crew members suddenly find themselves in a pickle. It’s all there, even down to a botched mission where our heroes are joined by one random Red Shirt.

Thai Red Shirt gets jail term for anti-king speech

A Thai court has sentenced a leader of the Red Shirt political movement to two years in prison for a speech judged to have insulted the country’s monarchy.

The court ruled Thursday that 54-year-old Yoswarit Chuklom made a speech insulting the monarchy at a political rally in 2010. The Red Shirts took to the streets in 2010 in political protests that ended with deadly clashes with the military.

Yoswarit was one of the group’s leaders. He is currently an advisor to a Cabinet minister.

Yoswarit has requested bail and intends to appeal.

Thailand‘s lese majeste law has been criticized as a violation of free speech. It mandates a jail term up to 15 years for anyone who “defames, insults, or threatens the king, the queen, the heir-apparent, or the regent.”
