Final Fantasy XIV's Jedi Mind Trick

Final? Square Enix doesn’t know the meaning of the word. That’s apparent enough from the avalanche of Final Fantasy games we’ve seen since 1987, but it’s especially true of its approach to its last MMORPG. By all accounts–including Square Enix’s–2010’s Final Fantasy XIV was an abomination, a shameful excuse for an MMORPG that couldn’t even pull off the simplest kill-and-fetch quest without tripping over itself. And so I tiptoed into this “reborn” incarnation of Eorzea with caution, fully expecting the world to crumble around me pixel by pixel. That didn’t happen. Against all odds, it was good, and I found myself reluctant to leave when the closed beta breathed its last. But was it enough to justify such a Herculean effort? I’m cautiously optimistic.

Can Elder Scrolls Online Work on Consoles?

An Elder Scrolls console MMORPG? Matt Firor, executive producer of ZeniMax, seemed convinced it could work during a recent chat with him, and despite my lingering concerns with other aspects of ESO, I’m prepared to believe him. I’m aware that I may be in the minority. When the news broke during E3 that ESO would be coming to both the PS4 and Xbox One along with the PC, many onlookers reacted as if the Oblivion crisis were at hand. Either a console transition would sacrifice some vague notion of complexity, it was believed, or it would fall flat on its face in the absence of “essential” PC elements such as modding capabilities. I beg to differ. ZeniMax has an ace up its sleeve: if it stays true to the series’ roots, it has a better chance of success than all console MMO efforts that have come before it.

SWTOR: Rise of the Hutt Cartel Review in Progress

I finished up the main storyline of Star Wars: The Old Republic’s Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion early Sunday morning, and while no credits rolled at the crucial moment, I was treated to a decent cinematic explaining how my Jedi was the most amazing dude in the galaxy. I’d beaten all the bad guys. I’d saved millions of lives. And yet I was still only level 53.

In other words, I still had a level and a half left to go. So much for closure. Such a wide gap between the story content and the level cap is rare in an MMORPG storyline, and you can’t say that I haven’t put my heart into the existing content. I’ve finished every main story quest on the new planet of Makeb, I’ve completed the first major sections of the off-world stories involving the new seeker droids and macrobinoculars, and I’ve finished daily quests as I’d encountered them. And yet, after all that, it seems I’ll either have to grind dailies or PvP battlegrounds to finish up to drive to 55.

WoW 5.2 Interview: Looking Forward, Looking Back

Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street, lead systems designer for World of Warcraft, wants to bring the eight-year-old MMORPG closer to its roots. Last week’s Patch 5.2 marks yet another step in that direction, bringing with it a renewed emphasis on ground travel, a sense of server-wide progression, a new raid, and an under-the-radar island that pays homage to the gameplay of WoW’s past. “This game’s been out for, gosh, eight years now and while we have millions of players, we also have a lot of players who’ve stopped playing for whatever reason,” he said. “It’s great to give those players a reason to come back and try it again, and appealing to their nostalgia is a good way of doing that. ”

That nostalgia manifests itself most prominently in the new Isle of Thunder, a new hub with dozens of daily quests that unlock more content via server participation in an manner that recalls 2008’s Isle of Quel’Danas from the Burning Crusade expansion. The process, Street hopes, will provide a more engaging daily questing experience than players have experienced in the Mists of Pandaria expansion to date. “One of the problems we had before with all our daily quests is that we just threw them all on players right away, so they burned out on the individual quests pretty quickly,” he said, adding that unlocking a new tier will grant access to an entirely new set of quests and further progression in the story.

Neverwinter: First Impressions

By Daniel Tack, Contributor

We had a chance to get some real hands-on time with Cryptic’s Neverwinter yesterday with a full dungeon run.  We’ve already had a chance to take look at the extensive user-driven Foundry system that’s in the game, so how’s the actual gameplay and experience?  Clearly it’s absurd to draw definitive analysis about any MMORPG (especially one in beta) from a few highly choreographed hours of play, but from a first impression standpoint – Things look great. …read more

By Daniel Tack, Contributor 5th Planet Games‘ Dawn of the Dragons is headed to the App Store this month.  Previously available on platforms such as Kongregate and Facebook, Dawn of the Dragons is the first 5th Planet Games title to make the move to mobile, but it won’t be the last.  It’s a perfect selection for their inaugural transition, as players will find that many elements of the game are standard conventions in the modern mobile MMORPG.

Wizardry Online Out Now

Sony Online Entertainment‘s Wizardy Online has launched. Based on the classic Wizardry franchise, the free-to-play MMORPG is currently available in Japan, Europe and North America. Sony describes Wizardry Online as “a fully re-imagined Wizardry game that stays true to the franchise’s trademark features: hardcore gameplay, intense difficulty, party-based combat and permadeath — where when you’re dead… you stay dead!”

That is not an exaggeration; difficulty is something Wizardry Online touts. If you die you engage a “Lost System,” wherein you get to make a donation to try and revive your body. If your donation isn’t good enough (though how that’s determined wasn’t disclosed in the press release), then you’ll have a second chance to donate. If this happens twice your character is lost for good. Todd Carson, Senior Producer, Sony Online Entertainment, also released the following statement regarding Wizardry Online‘s difficulty:
