Ever since exploding onto the scene in the 1980s, Tom Cruise has remained one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. His personal life might be constant tabloid fodder, but in theaters Cruise still manages to keep us entertained. Whether he’s shooting down Russian MIGs, running from or toward danger, or just being handsome and charming, Cruise rarely disappoints. And we’re hoping that trend will continue this Friday when Oblivion hits theaters.

We figured the time had come to take a look at Cruise’s prolific career and pick out his best films. Brad Bird's Return of the Jedi Fix

It’s generally accepted that Return of the Jedi is good but not great, right? And apparently, even Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird agrees.

At least, that’s what actor-comedian Patton Oswalt tells Esquire in a new interview. Bird apparently once filled Oswalt in on what he would’ve done to spruce up Jedi, and the topic came up when Esquire’s reporter commented to Oswalt that “you can learn so much from an early failure.”

“It’s weirdly important,” Oswalt replied. “I was talking with

Brad Bird one time, and he said it’s like the beginning of Return of the Jedi. Luke shows up and he’s a badass. He said they should’ve opened it with Luke in the swamp saying to Yoda, ‘You said “Don’t go.” I said “F#@k you, I’m gonna go help my friends.” I went and got my hand cut off and my friends are in even worse trouble because of what I did. I f#@ked up everything.’ And then Yoda should have gone, ‘Now you’re a Jedi. Now you’re beyond the fear of failure. Now you’re ready.’ That would have made it even cooler.”

We’ve known that writer-producer Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, Lost) and director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol) have a mystery film in the works at Disney called 1952. But with it being, you know, a mystery film and all, we’ve had no idea what it was about. But now the pair is dropping some clues…

Lindelof and Bird have tweeted a couple of photos revealing a mysterious box — reportedly discovered in Disney’s vaults and the inspiration behind the film — that offers up hints about 1952. Have a look:

Jack Reacher Sequel Looking Unlikely

Jack Reacher is yet to open in several territories, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will struggle to make enough money to justify a sequel.

The action thriller – which stars Tom Cruise – has grossed $153m thus far, with THR sources claiming that the film will need to gross more than $250m for studio Paramount to even consider a follow-up.

That means Reacher would have to score big in Japan, China and Korea, which isn’t out of the question as Cruise is a huge star in Asia.

But it’s hardly the franchise starter that Paramount was hoping from, and a long way from the gross of Cruise’s last film, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which scored a whopping $694.7m worldwide.
