Report: First Toyota unintended acceleration case headed for trial

By Brandon Turkus

2006 Toyota Camry XLE front three-quarters

Filed under:

Toyota is going to be back in the spotlight, as the first of its unintended acceleration lawsuits is headed for trial. This case covers a Los Angeles sushi shop owner, Noriko Uno. According to the what the family told The Detroit News, Uno only put about 10,000 miles on her 2006 Toyota Camry in four years. Uno was apparently afraid of high speeds, avoiding the freeway and taking a route home along LA’s surface streets to avoid them.

On August 28, 2009, Uno’s Camry suddenly accelerated to 100 miles per hour, eventually striking a telephone poll and a tree and killing her. The family contends that Uno attempted to step on the brakes and pull the emergency brake, neither of which brought her speed under control, while Toyota maintains that improperly installed floormats and driver error have been behind the majority of the 80 cases expected to be heard in court.

In Uno’s case, The Detroit News is expecting the trial to focus on the lack of an override if the gas and brake pedals were pressed at the same time. Brake overrides were installed on Toyota’s European fleet. The Uno family attorney will need to prove to the jury that it wasn’t driver error that killed Noriko Uno.

Uno’s case will be a bellwether case, which other state courts will use to predict potential outcomes for similar lawsuits. Toyota is also combating suits in federal court as well, although in most cases both sides have chosen to settle. The federal suit argues that the Camry and other models had defective electronic throttle control systems, despite denials from Toyota and investigations from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA coming up empty.

Kristen Stewart Wears Short Shorts, Flashes Major Leg On Movie Set (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Kristen Stewart may not be quick to flash a smile, but she seems just fine with flashing a whole lotta leg.

KStew was spotted on set of her new movie “Camp X-Ray” in Los Angeles, Calif., earlier today. She enjoyed the 75 degrees weather in her usual tomboy garb: short crimson shorts, a T-shirt that allowed for a sliver of her midriff to peek through, Converse sneakers and a backwards cap.

In the movie, Stewart plays a young woman who enlists in the military and winds up stationed at Guantanamo Bay. Once there, she starts to form a bond with one of the captives.

Korea, Not China, Should Be Our Model For Urban Development

By Richard Green, Contributor Here in Los Angeles, the subway along Wilshire Boulevard, one of the densest streets in America, ends 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean.  The Long Beach (or 710) Freeway and the 210 Freeway, two of the busiest trucking routes in America, are connected by surface streets, even though they are only 4.5 miles apart.  Both of these projects have been discussed for decades. The “Subway to the Sea” may finally happen, but even now, it will only go as far as Westwood, and it was delayed because of tantrums from Beverly Hills.  It is still not clear what will happen with the 710-210 gap. …read more

Need help: our 800 sq.ft. apartment only has 2x15amp circuits, is that legal?

By skatin

Hi all, my first post here. Thank you for reading.

I have a huge problem. About six months ago, my family and I moved into a two bedroom, 800 square foot apartment. Almost immediately, we discovered the available electrical power is severely limited. Circuits were popping left and right.

Through trial and error, I discovered the entire apartment only has 2 15-amp circuits. One circuit covers the kitchen, dining room and living room. The second circuit covers two bedrooms, the bathroom and hallway.

We need more power. Summer is here, and it is getting hot. I live in Los Angeles, specifically Inglewood. There is no central AC, and window AC units are not allowed. I have to buy and use the portable AC units, and run a hose to the window, which is fine, but there’s not enough power for AC units.

I made a request to the office manager, who had me put it in writing. The response I got was the wiring cannot handle additional load, so there’s nothing they can do about it. They claim the electrical system meets legal specifications, so they don’t have to do anything.

They told me to buy one small unit, and only run one AC unit at a time. I won’t go into btu’s per foot stuff (which I did research), but even the largest 110-volt unit (14,000 btu, 10.5 amps) will not cool the entire apartment, and if it could, there’s not enough power anyways.

I’m no code expert, but a quick “National Electric Code” google search tells me this apartment should have a LOT more than just 2 15-amp circuits. The kitchen alone should have a least 2×20 amp appliance circuits. It has neither.

I should note: we love it here! The neighbors are great, the neighborhood is nice, location is perfect, so we don’t want to move, or even rock the boat. I don’t want to lawyer up, or start calling federal, state and local regulatory authorities and file complaints. I don’t want anyone getting into trouble. I just want more power, so we can have sufficient AC. The maintenance manager told me he’s received no complaints, and insists there is no problem.

Is he right? Does our apartment meet electrical code requirements? Am I up a creek without a paddle?

Thanks for reading, and I appreciate your feedback!

Sincerely,

Sweating Tenant

Local Spanish Language Television Reporters Attend "Live from the White House" Series

By Katherine Vargas

For the first time ever, the White House invited four local Spanish-language television anchors to participate in the “Live from the White House” series, or in this case “En Vivo desde la Casa Blanca”. During this full day of behind-the-scenes and special access, each reporter had the opportunity to interview President Barack Obama. “Live from the White House” is an initiative which provides reporters outside of the Beltway a unique opportunity to cover the President and the Administration.

Spanish language television anchors from Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles and New Jersey/New York City were given the opportunity to broadcast Tuesday from a special location on the South Lawn and attended briefings with some of the President’s top advisers on issues that are important to their Latino audiences like healthcare and immigration reform.

The reporters interviewed the President in the Blue Room, where he made the case for bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform which would be a big boost to our economy; offer a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals and modernize our legal immigration system to make it more consistent with our values.

In the interviews, the President made clear the key principles which must be a part of any bipartisan, commonsense effort, including continuing to strengthen border security, creating an earned path to citizenship, holding employers accountable, and bringing our immigration system into the 21st century. Immigration reform has broad bipartisan support from Democrats and Republicans, CEOs and labor leaders, and law enforcement and faith leaders. Most importantly, it has the support of the American people.
