Video: Hot lap the Hungaroring with Codemasters' F1 2013 and Anthony Davidson

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Au courant with the Hungarian Grand Prix running this weekend, Codemasters has released in-game footage from F1 2013 of a hot lap video of the Hungaroring driven by Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo and narrated by ex-Formula One driver and current Sky F1 commentator and sportscar racer Anthony Davidson. The graphics have improved over F1 2012, Davidson’s commentary is just as good as it was last year, and the rear-view mirrors are still huge.

There are also hot lap vids of the Nürburgring driven by Kimi Räikkönen in his Lotus and Silverstone piloted by Jenson Button in his McLaren. The game hits shelves October 8, but you can watch the hot lap videos below right now.

The Only 2013 Formula 1 Season Preview You’ll Need

By Austin Lindberg

The action in Formula 1 doesn’t stop once the season ends: Once the champagne has gone flat in Brazil, teams have less than 12 weeks before their first public on-track appearances for the next season. Over those precious three months, teams will spend hours poring over the revised rulebook to discover any loopholes that can be exploited—while staying within “the spirit of the rules,” of course. There will be changes in ownership, management, and sponsorship, as well as teams that may cease to exist entirely. And, as seems to happen every year, tire compounds and constructions will change, adding another element for the engineers to deal with. And while the 2012 season will go down as one of the most exciting in F1 history, what’s transpired since Jenson Button finished first last November in São Paulo indicates that 2013 could be as good, if not better.

Major Changes at Mercedes

When Bernie’s traveling circus reconvened in Jerez and Barcelona for preseason testing, no fewer than eight drivers vacated their cars, but the biggest action was over at Mercedes. Legend Michael Schumacher announced his retirement last fall after his three-year comeback tour with Benz fell well short of expectations. But his departure was just the second step in what would become a massive overhaul at Mercedes as the 2012 season wound down. A week prior to Schumacher’s announcement, Lewis Hamilton made known that he would swap his McLaren for a Mercedes starting in 2013. Six weeks later, Benz’s head of motorsport, Norbert Haug, was relieved of his duties and subsequently was replaced by three-time world champion Niki Lauda. And, early this year, Paddy Lowe, who had been with McLaren for the past 20 years, was announced as Mercedes’ technical director beginning in 2014. Lowe’s appointment likely serves as writing on the wall for team principal Ross Brawn, who has led the non-business side of the team since moving from his eponymous effort to Mercedes for the 2010 season. The other driver changes for 2013 are detailed below in the team previews.

Double-DRS Banned

While the names affiliated with the teams are ever in flux, so too are the rules. Of the 2013 changes, of most interest is the ban on “double-DRS systems,” similar to what was used by Mercedes last season. Essentially, when the driver engages DRS (Drag-Reduction System), the rear wing opens to reduce drag. Benz’s double DRS exposed a pair of intakes, which channel air to the front of the car and stalled the front wing, further decreasing downforce and increasing top speed. Already we’ve seen teams exploiting a loophole in this new regulation. “Passive double-DRS,” in which intakes are permanently exposed and automatically activate above a certain speed rather than being driver-activated, is allowed, and both Red Bull and Lotus have been experimenting with the idea.

Tire Updates

Another obstacle for the engineers is that Pirelli—the exclusive tire supplier since 2011—has again changed its choices for 2013. The entire range will …read more

F1 Star Lewis Hamilton Sets New Top Gear Lap Record

By Kurt Ernst

Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton made his first cameo appearance on Top Gear in 2007, during the British driver’s inaugural Formula One season. His Top Gear test track lap of 1:44.7 wouldn’t have been particularly impressive, except for the fact that the track was wet and the final corner, Gambon, was covered in oil from a grenaded gearbox.

Compared to other F1 stars, Hamilton wasn’t too far off the mark. Nigel Mansell managed a 1:44.6 on a dry track, while Hamilton’s former teammate, Jenson Button, produced a matching time of 1:44.7 on an exceptionally hot day. In the wet, with the track nearly underwater, Kimi Raikkonen turned a lap in 1:46.1.

The fastest lap time among Formula One drivers was set by multiple world champion Sebastian Vettel, who cranked out a lap in 1:44.0. That time stood for two seasons, until Lewis Hamilton had a chance to reprise his role on the show. As Planet F1 tells us, Hamilton completed a lap in the Suzuki Liana (used by all F1 drivers) in a blistering 1:42.9, cutting an impressive 1.1 seconds off of Vettel’s previous record.

In fairness to Vettel, Hamilton was driving under clear and cool conditions, ideal for setting a high-speed lap (once the tires have heat in the, of course). Will Vettel have the opportunity to reprise his lap as well? How about Kimi Raikkonen lapping in the dry?

We’ll see the lap on BBC America next Monday, February 25, but the “behind the scenes” video below (from Top Gear’s Transmission blog) sets it up nicely.

Official: McLaren introduces the MP4-28 Formula One [w/videos]

By Jonathon Ramsey

McLaren F1 hasn’t gone into much detail on the changes included in its brand new MP4-28, which might cause a double-take since it has the same lines and paint job as last year’s car. We’re told, however, that under the skin it is a new beast, team managing director Jonathan Neale saying that instead of evolving last year’s race-winning car it made more sense to be more ambitious and provide a more open-ended development track.

The front suspension is a pull-rod type like the one used by Ferrari, which is a change from last year, and the sidepods and rear bodywork are probably the most notable of the other upgrades. McLaren hopes the “deep and sweeping re-design” will avoid the mid-season slump of last year; the team had the fastest car to start and end the 2012 season, but it played catch-up during the meaty part of the year. As we can expect with probably every major team on the grid, upgrades are already planned, McLaren saying there’s a big package being prepared for the second test.

Returning driver Jenson Button now leads the team after Lewis Hamilton‘s departure to Mercedes, and is paired with ex-Sauber driver Sergio Perez. Two videos below will get you a closer look at their steeds: The first video is the television presentation – the action starts at 31:52, the second gets some close-up shots of the silver bullet.
