Codemasters Announces F1 2013

Codemasters has announced F1 2013 will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC later this autumn.

Two versions of the game will be available this year – in addition to the standard F1 2013, there will also be F1 2013: Classic Edition.

The standard edition of the game will feature all the cars, circuits and drivers from the 2013 season, including Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes and Sergio Perez with McLaren-Mercedes. Additionally, updated rules, tyre changes and remodelled handling have also been included.

In both versions of the game, the new F1 Classics mode hosted by Murray Walker will offer players control of a number of legendary drivers and classic cars, meaning you can race five iconic 1980’s vehicles against the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger. The Circuito De Jerez and Brands Hatch circuits will also be available.

Reminder: The 2013 Formula One Season Starts Sunday – Video

In five days, the 2013 Formula One season kicks off with the Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia. Fans will see quite a few changes from last season, beginning with the cars: in an effort to level the playing field, certain technologies (such as blown diffusers, which routed exhaust gas to create additional downforce) will be banned by the 2013 competition rules.

That should up the number of teams running at the front of each race, meaning that the championship won’t be just a battle between Infiniti Red Bull, McLaren Mercedes and Ferrari. If we had to guess, we’d expect the Lotus F1 team and even the Mercedes AMG Petronas team to be more competitive in 2013 than in 2012.

There are plenty of driver changes to talk about as well. Lewis Hamilton vacated his seat at McLaren last year for a ride with the Mercedes team, while fast and hungry Sergio Perez takes over Hamilton’s old McLaren. Nico Hulkenberg left Force India to take Perez’s old seat at Sauber, where he’ll partner with former test driver Esteban Gutierrez. Filling Hulkenberg’s vacant Force India seat is Adrian Sutil, who returns to the sport after a year’s absence.

Japanese drive Kamui Kobayashi was left without a ride at Sauber, due primarily to lack of sponsorship money. The same issue now hangs over Williams driver Pastor Maldonado; the Venezuelan had ties to Hugo Chavez, who provided sponsorship via PDVSA, the Venezuelan state oil company. Following Chavez’s death, its a bit unclear if Maldonado will be able to retain the same level of sponsorship necessary to fund his ride.

It will be a blank slate on Sunday, and a whole new season awaits drivers, teams and fans alike. If you can’t be in Australia for the opening round, you can catch it on the NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus). Live coverage begins Sunday morning at 1:30 a.m. Eastern.

Official: McLaren introduces the MP4-28 Formula One [w/videos]

McLaren F1 hasn’t gone into much detail on the changes included in its brand new MP4-28, which might cause a double-take since it has the same lines and paint job as last year’s car. We’re told, however, that under the skin it is a new beast, team managing director Jonathan Neale saying that instead of evolving last year’s race-winning car it made more sense to be more ambitious and provide a more open-ended development track.

The front suspension is a pull-rod type like the one used by Ferrari, which is a change from last year, and the sidepods and rear bodywork are probably the most notable of the other upgrades. McLaren hopes the “deep and sweeping re-design” will avoid the mid-season slump of last year; the team had the fastest car to start and end the 2012 season, but it played catch-up during the meaty part of the year. As we can expect with probably every major team on the grid, upgrades are already planned, McLaren saying there’s a big package being prepared for the second test.

Returning driver Jenson Button now leads the team after Lewis Hamilton‘s departure to Mercedes, and is paired with ex-Sauber driver Sergio Perez.
