By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Au courant with the Hungarian Grand Prix running this weekend, Codemasters has released in-game footage from F1 2013 of a hot lap video of the Hungaroring driven by Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo and narrated by ex-Formula One driver and current Sky F1 commentator and sportscar racer Anthony Davidson. The graphics have improved over F1 2012, Davidson’s commentary is just as good as it was last year, and the rear-view mirrors are still huge.

There are also hot lap vids of the Nürburgring driven by Kimi Räikkönen in his Lotus and Silverstone piloted by Jenson Button in his McLaren. The game hits shelves October 8, but you can watch the hot lap videos below right now.

Toyota Reveals Updated TS030 WEC Hybrid Le Mans Prototype Racer

By Austin Lindberg

Toyota Racing TS030 hybrid race car

Toyota’s attempt to beat Audi in the World Endurance Championship got off to a rocky start in 2012, but ended up rock solid. New-car teething problems and an accident during testing kept Toyota from the first two races last year, so the brand’s debut came at Le Mans. Tough crowd. Accidents, including Anthony Davidson’s terrifying crash at the end of the Mulsanne Straight ended the battle with Audi in France. But Toyota showed strength at the end of the season, taking the pole and winning three of the last four races: Brazil, China and at home in Japan.  At least that’s the corporate home as the competition program is run out of Toyota’s racing base in Cologne, Germany.

That is where the automaker unveiled its updated 2013 WEC challenger. The TS030′s hybrid system has been “fine-tuned.” Unlike Audi with its diesel engine/flywheel energy-recovery system combo, Toyota matches a 530-hp, 3.4-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline V-8 with a super capacitor that can add an extra 300 horsepower.

One last-minute decision in 2012 was to flow the added power to the rear wheels, rather than the fronts as Audi does. As a result, last year’s monocoque structure could accept either system. Pascal Vasselon, Technical Director for the team explained that, “… the 2012 car, being a laboratory car, was able to accept front and rear hybrid systems, so we have redesigned the monocoque to optimize it without the front motor. Last year’s performance was very satisfying and we felt we ticked most boxes so there has been no concept change, just refinement and optimization of the 2012 car.”

The aerodynamics have also been improved and to underline Toyota’s plans for the future, Hisatake Murata, Hybrid Project Leader, mentioned they were including some pre-testing of 2014 technologies. Which bodes well for next year’s new rules and Porsche’s return to WEC.

Motorsports: Toyota updates Le Mans-ready TS030 hybrid for 2013 season [w/video]

By Zach Bowman

Toyota TS030

Toyota has polished up its TS030 hybrid Le Mans race car for the 2013 season. Once again, the machine uses a 530-horsepower 3.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 paired with a capacitor-based hybrid system with an additional 300 horsepower on hand. This year, engineers have tweaked the drivetrain to deliver more power and efficiency while bolstering reliability. The chassis has received a few updates of its own, though Toyota is keeping those changes under wraps for the time being. Fans can expect to see a new aerodynamic package at work on the prototype, and the chassis will conform to new regulations that increase the minimum weight of LMP1 cars by 33 pounds.

Last year, the TS030 won three events over six races, but ran into a number of issues during the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans. The No. 8 Toyota suffered a spectacle of a crash that saw driver Anthony Davidson hospitalized with two fractured vertebra. And while the No. 7 car briefly held the lead over rival Audi, trouble in the pits and engine failure eventually saw that car sidelined as well.

This year, the No. 7 TS030 will be piloted by Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima while the No. 8 machine will fall to the hands of Anthonay Davidson, Stephane Sarrazin and Sebastien Buemi. You can view the full press release below as well as a quick video on the 2014 TS030.
