Whole Foods' GMO Labels Are About to Change Grocery Shopping

By M. Joy Hayes, Ph.D.

Genetically Modified Organisms

Who would have thought that Walmart (WMT) would ever sell organic foods? But now they do, and you can thank Whole Foods (WFM) for that. Whole Foods sets the trends, and it’s about to do it again with a new food-labeling initiative that may force other major retailers to follow suit.

Whole Foods announced on Friday that it is giving its suppliers five years to clearly label all products containing ingredients with genetic material that has been modified through genetic engineering, or Genetically Modified Organisms. Alternatively, suppliers have the option of sourcing only non-GMO ingredients. The company says this move is in response to consumer demand (as reflected by the growing sales of their existing non-GMO products) and grassroots political movements pushing for more transparent labeling.

Where Whole Food Goes, So Goes the Neighborhood

Whole Foods became the first national certified organic grocer in 2003 and flourished as it served high-income customers. Other major retailers saw that there it was profitable to offer organic food options that were clearly labeled as such.

In 2005, Safeway (SWY) introduced its own private-label organics line, called O Organics. In 2006, Walmart, Target (TGT), and Costco (COST) all introduced their own lines of organic products.

In turn, this broader demand motivated big brands like Kellogg (K) and Kraft (KRFT) to start developing organic versions of their most popular products in order to meet the grocers’ new and growing demand for organic products.

Next Course, Hold the GMOs

If Whole Foods is right about the significant, growing consumer demand for non-GMO products, then we should expect to see a similar spread of non-GMO products in mainstream grocery stores.

According to a recent poll conducted by Huffington Post and YouGov, 82 percent of Americans want GMO foods to be clearly labeled. Whole Foods President A.C. Gallo told The New York Times that some of their suppliers have seen sales increases of 15 percent in foods they have labeled.

While opponents of the initiative claim that GMO labels can mislead consumers by creating a false impression that GMO foods pose health risks, advocates claim that they do have the potential to pose a wide range of health risks — everything from creating new allergens to causing humans to build up a resistance to antibiotics.

Advocates also worry that GMOs eliminate genetic diversity in our crops and put us in a position where the introduction of a new pathogen could destroy an entire food source. And some say that the FDA‘s claim that products containing GMOs are safe for consumption is based on inadequate testing — and that many of the studies that conclude GMOs are safe have been conducted …read more

The good news for 63 of the 64 teams earning an invitation to the 2013 Women’s Basketball Tournament is that Brittney Griner and the Lady Bears of Baylor have shown they can actually be defeated this season. The bad news for all of those teams is that Griner and company seem committed to not losing another game.

To the surprise of no one, the Lady Bears were awarded one of four No. 1 seeds when the women’s bracket was unveiled on Selection Monday. The other three No. 1 seeds went to UConn, Stanford and Notre Dame. All four of these teams earned No. 1 seeds in the 2012 tournament.

By The Huffington Post News Editors

What happens after happily ever after? Jon Cozart knows, and thanks to him, now so do we.

Cozart, the creator of the viral video ‘After Ever After’ which spoofs the classic songs from Disney films, talked to HuffPost Live Thursday about his masterpiece. He told host Jacob Soboroff how he went about making the video and how long it took him. While Cozart admitted that he’s lip-synching on the finished product, the parts in all four frames are his voice, and he filmed each part in one take.

Jacob predicted Thursday that the video would “go extremely viral” (as of Friday morning, HuffPost Comedy’s writeup was the most viewed entry on the site), to which Cozart replied “I’m talking to the Huffington Post right now, so I did something right.”

Former NY Times Editor Bill Keller on Tech Cults, Native Advertising and the Benefits of Buyouts

By Jeff Bercovici, Forbes Staff

Bill Keller obviously has something of a love/hate relationship with the internet. The former New York Times executive editor has written columns questioning the societal value of Twitter and web news aggregators like the Huffington Post. On the other hand, he’s rather active on Twitter, where he has more than 50,000 followers, and it was under his tenure that the Times became an enthusiastic user of that platform, among a slew of other digital technologies. …read more

Is Print Dead, or Will These Spinoffs Be Great Investments?

By Michael Lewis, Lewis, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Typically, spinoffs are great opportunities for investors to snag up underfollowed, and sometimes undervalued, companies while the rest of the market turns a blind eye. For two upcoming publishing spinoffs, though, it’s going to be a hard sell even for special-situations lovers. The publishing business is in upheaval, and these two companies are a large part of what is being upheaved — and it’s probably why their parents are using this bull market as an excuse to unload these revenue drains.

Of course, since analysts and investors have been quick to squawk about these seemingly terrible investments, I’m compelled to take another look. There are few elements to stocks more attractive than being universally disliked by the Street and its minions. Let’s see if these two upcoming publishing spinoffs are as bad as they say.

Introducing the losers
Companies spin off their components in efforts to unlock hidden value in the parent, the subsidiary, or sometimes both. When a thriving business is burdened under a slower-moving conglomerate, sometimes the only way is for it to take on a life of its own as another public entity. In this case, though, it’s really the parents that are thriving and need to be allowed to fly free.

News Corp. is a parental case in point. It’s a diversified media company with properties ranging from Fox News to The Wall Street Journal. It’s been a strong company that’s weathered disruptive technology and industry change well, phone hacking aside. The stock has responded accordingly, rising more than 50% in the past 12 months. The company is currently a top favorite among hedge fund managers, as its upcoming schism will yield one company that operates the difficult publishing business, and one that operates the media and entertainment operations — including the highly valuable regional sports networks.

The other company to announce excommunication of its publishing side is Time Warner . This is third major spinoff for Time Warner, which already separated its cable company, Time Warner Cable , and its Internet property, AOL . Though volatile at times, Time Warner Cable performed well in 2012, rising a bit more than 50% throughout the year, only to retract a bit in the early months of 2013. After a decade-long rough patch following the tech bust of the early 2000s, AOL seemed to have finally turned the corner midway through 2011 and has since been on a nearly vertical trend.

For both companies, though, these latest spinoffs haven’t been met with enthusiasm. Just this week, Yahoo!‘s Jeff Macke ripped into both prospective companies, citing Time Inc.’s troubled titles such as People magazine. The magazine industry, with the exception of those that have taken to the Web successfully, is getting crushed. A weekly newsrag, regardless of its content, cannot compete with the instant gratification of the Huffington Post or Gawker.

News Corp.’s spinoff may be more attractive than Time Warner‘s, as the aforementioned Wall Street Journal remains the end-all publication …read more

2 Girls 1 Cup-Cake Maker Is Not What You Think (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Word associative marketing has a bad rep. Or at least it does on Reddit. But this Facebook ad for a Dutch web retailer appears to have broken the mold.

MediaMarktNL posted an ad for the “2 girls 1 cup-cake maker” on its Facebook page Wednesday.

According to a Huffington Post translation, the image is captioned “So good that it’s impossible to film,” which pretty much confirms that the ad is a knowing nod to the infamous viral scat porn video so hideously awful that Louis C.K. couldn’t handle it.
