Official: Renault promises new concept car and Dacia Duster in Frankfurt

By Brandon Turkus

Dacia Duster front three-quarter

Filed under:

Renault and Dacia will be headed to the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in a big way, with a new concept car from the French company and an all-new Duster from its Romanian budget brand. The new concept is particularly exciting, as Renault’s press release mentions a “new brand identity.” We can also count on this car being a bit higher on the luxury scale than Renault’s traditional offerings.

Dacia’s new Duster will have big shoes to fill when it hits the spotlights of Frankfurt. The current Duster (pictured), a small, handsomely rugged CUV, was introduced in 2010, and has been a critical hit in Great Britain, Russia, and India (where it’s called the Renault Duster). It’s also been a smash with customers, becoming Renault’s best-selling global model.

Both the new Duster and Renault’s latest concept will hit the stage in Frankfurt on September 10.

No discomfort for Walker during rehab stint

By Tom Singer Neil Walker got to bat from both sides of the plate, got a couple of hits and participated in a couple of double plays. But the best thing to happen to Walker during his rehab weekend at Triple-A Indianapolis was swinging and missing. Getting fooled on pitches rarely felt as good — because Walker couldn’t feel any discomfort in the right oblique area that put him on the disabled list on June 9. …read more

Report: Mercedes FWD platform to last until 2018, convertible and two-seater future uncertain

By Brandon Turkus

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan - front three-quarter view, silver

Filed under:

Mercedes-Benz seems to be expecting a lot of success from its front-wheel-drive CLA-Class. Automotive News is reporting that the sub-C-Class sedan could grow when its second generation arrives in 2018.

The current FWD platform for MB underpins the CLA, the B-Class, the GLA-Class, and the A-Class. The B-Class will arrive in North America as an EV for spring of 2014, while the production GLA crossover will arrive three to four months after that. The five-door A-Class won’t be crossing The Pond. Sad faces all around.

According to AN, another model will be based on the front-drive architecture, but it won’t be coming to the US market. Set to arrive next year, rumors are that it’ll be a wagon version of the CLA, sort of like the ill-named five-door CLS Shooting Brake that is also a Europe-only item.

As for the rumored CLA convertible and two-seat roadster, if those two arrive, it’s not going to be until the second-generation of the current architecture hits the market. Even then, their future is in uncertain, as Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG told Automotive News, “We are considering the final portfolio of the next generation of our compact cars. We have to define it and we may expand the portfolio.”

Gig-It: FarmVille Meets Rock Band, On Facebook

By Zack O’Malley Greenburg, Forbes Staff

Nas doesn’t usually perform multiple concerts on the same night, but April 30th was a notable exception. The Queens-born rapper wowed a crowd with a string of hits from his classic, Illmatic—and followed with another set at the same venue, ending with the 1994 album’s closer, “It Ain’t Hard To Tell.” …read more

Cameron Diaz's Latest Role: PLV Artistic Director

By Randy Miller

The star of In Her Shoes is literally giving you a chance to walk in them. With today’s news that Cameron Diaz has been named artistic director of Pour La Victoire, fans of the leggy star can emulate her footwear style come Spring (“Cameron’s Picks” for Fall and Holiday will roll out earlier, as well as a Jessica Hart campaign at which she was on set).

More than being just a spokesperson for the label, Cameron described the partnership: “I don’t do endorsements really. This is completely different.” Cameron added, “Being influential in a brand and in its [advertising] campaigns interests me. I love fashion. It’s a large part of my life. What I wear is looked at. It influences what other people wear because that’s just the world we live in.”

Born from a visit last year to the company showroom, the actress now owns a stake in PLV Studio Inc. – which owns Kelsi Dagger and licenses bags for French Connection, though she’ll have creative control over Pour La Victoire exclusively while working closely with PLV Studio’s creative director, David Giordano. In the role, she’ll be involved in the label’s shoe and handbag collections, as well as their merchandising, marketing, and advertising. With a heavy load to undertake, Cameron admitted, “There’s a lot I have to learn about the business. I’m interested in learning how collections are created. The word ‘fun,’ I want to say that it’s going to be fun, but it’s deeper than that.”

For an idea of what we can look forward to when the actress’s first collection hits stores, Cameron promised, “We want the brand to be accessible for that working girl . . . I work hard for my money. I want it [the collection] to be sensible, whether you have a lot of money or you are scraping together pennies.” And on that note, we’re saving up!

The Price Of The Autism-Measles Panic, 15 Years Later

By Emily Willingham, Contributor

Several news outlets today are reviewing the measles outbreak in Wales, citing public health experts who lay the blame for the burst in cases squarely at the feet of Andrew Wakefield’s bogus MMR vaccine scare in 1998 and the subsequent media coverage. The Wall Street Journal has a particularly in-depth story [hits paywall if you click the link here, but clicking from Google News seems to give full access], “Fifteen Years After Autism Panic, a Plague of Measles Erupts,” that digs into the roles of both in the Wales outbreak, that left 1219 people infected with measles and one in ten hospitalized. Most were hospitalized with pneumonia or dehydration, and most fell into the age range of children who should have been vaccinated around the time of the Wakefield scare. …read more

corner cabinet lazy susan

By David Doran

Hopefully I have the right forum group, everyone is always such a book of knowledge…………have a kitchen cabinet that has a corner unit which has a lazy susan as part of the angle door. Over the years the mechanism I assume has settled and the bottom of the door hits the base threshold. Is there an adjustment on the mechanism itself or do you loosen the bottom and put a shim in to raise it just enough so the turning door clears the threshold.
I think others may have had this issue over the years, cabinets are laminate and where put in I suspect in the 60’s.
