For those who like to drive, but are frugal-minded, there’s plenty of good news. Compact sedan and hatchback models have very quickly evolved over the past several years, shedding their staid appearance and miserly demeanor for something much more interesting–including more better-trimmed interiors, and feature sets appealing for those who do… …read more

Official: Qoros brand debuting in Geneva with 3 Sedan, two concepts
Filed under:
There will be plenty of debuts at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but one of the more unique reveals will be for an entire car company. Chinese automaker Qoros will use the prominent auto show to introduce itself to the world by launching a new production-intent sedan as well as two “concepts” that appear to be production ready. Qoros was founded as a part of a joint venture between Chery Automobile and global holding company, Israel Corporation.
Unlike most Chinese-designed cars we’ve seen recently, this car is neither unsightly nor a blatant rip off of another automaker. There are some hints of maybe BMW and even a little Kia on the outside and some Volkswagen and Audi on the inside, but the overall design language is clean and unique. This includes the highly detailed exterior with the Qoros name inscribed into the headlights as well as the large eight-inch touch-screen infotainment and navigation display inside the car.
At 181 inches long and 72.4 inches wide, this sedan is just slightly longer and wider than a Ford Focus. Under the hood, there will be two engines available at launch with another two said to be coming later. The base engine will be a 1.6-liter four-cylinder producing 126 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, and there’s also a turbocharged version of the same engine putting out 156 hp and 154 lb-ft; two turbocharged and direct-injected engines (a 1.3-liter inline-three and a 1.6-liter inline-four) will come at a later date. Transmissions include a base six-speed manual or an optional six-speed dual clutch transmission; auto stop-start is also an option.
Looking down the road, the Qoros 3 Cross Hybrid Concept shows a potential crossover model for the brand using a Honda-like Integrated Starter Generator sandwiched between the engine and transmission, but there is also another motor offering power to the rear axle for use as all-wheel drive. Finally, there is the Qoros 3 Estate Concept showing off a likely station wagon model. Feel free to peruse the press blast below.

Official: Nissan to build Golf-fighter in Spain
Filed under:
Nissan hasn’t had a proper European entry in the ridiculously popular compact hatchback segment since it stopped offering its somewhat staid and uninspiring Almera (above) in 2006. According to Automotive News Europe, the new machine, which will not be called Almera, will be marketed against the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus – two extremely popular models in Europe. Production is slated to begin in July of 2014.
The new compact will be built in Barcelona, Spain, at the factory that currently builds the Pathfinder, Navara pickup and NV200 commercial van. An investment of $178 million will be made to assemble the compact car, and an additional $27 million will go to the plant to create more trucks and transmissions for electric vehicles.
The decision to invest in Spain comes after the automaker successfully renegotiated contracts with local unions. Similar talks are underway in France, where Nissan partner Renault is based, but as of yet no new agreements have been struck. Feel free to browse through the official press release below.

2013 Hyundai Elantra GT Manual Tested: Good Looks, Competent Package
By Tony Swan
Hyundai’s Elantra is a solid player in the crowded compact-car competition, but it has also faced self-imposed limitations, lacking the nifty hatchback variants offered by competitors like the Ford Focus, Mazda 3, and Subaru Impreza. The deceased Elantra Touring wagon nibbled at this turf but lacked the svelte looks and desirability of many of its five-door rivals. READ MORE ››

Kia Tries Yet Again To Prove That Compact Sedans Are Its Forte
For those keeping track, the introduction of the 2014 Kia Forte sedan marks the second time in five years that Kia has completely redesigned its compact sedan offering. Put another way, car shoppers have now had three entirely different options in this category from Kia – the unloved Spectra along with two generations of the Forte – in the same period of time that Toyota has been building the current Corolla.
If nothing else, it’s clear that Kia is committed to making as big of a dent in the compact class as possible. That said, none of Kia’s entries have come close to challenging the dominance of the aforementioned Corolla, Honda Civic or Volkswagen Jetta, domestic offerings like the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze, or even the Hyundai Elantra, its slightly older and more subdued Korean sibling, in the race for market share.
We spent a day driving the new 2014 Forte Sedan through the wide open spaces separating the copper mines of central Arizona to find out if Kia’s latest offering has what it takes to play in the compact car Big Leagues.

2013 Ford Focus
Most small-car shoppers now want not only a vehicle that’s compact and economical, but also one that’s fun to drive, stylish, and includes the latest technologies. Basic, ‘economy car’ transportation appliances don’t cut it any longer for these buyers. Last year, the launch of the all-new redesigned Ford Focus model leapfrogged Ford’s…

Official: Ford sales in China up 21% in 2012, 43% in Dec. alone
Filed under: Budget, China, Crossover, Ford
Ford went into the Beijing Motor Show last year talking big about its “15 by 15” plan for China – introducing 15 new models to the market by 2015, doubling production capacity and its dealership network. Its stand at the show showcased four new vehicles – the EcoSport, Kuga, Edge and Explorer CUVs – along with the launch of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost in the Ford Focus (pictured) and convenience features like the Mandarin-enabled SYNC system in the new, Chinese-built Focus.
It’s all paying off so far, with Ford reporting record December sales and annual sales (all sales are wholesales in China) in the world’s largest auto market. Overall December sales were up 43 percent to 70,510 compared to 49,238 in the year before, with overall annual sales up by 21 percent to 626,616 compared to 519,390 in 2011.
Those numbers are a combination of Ford Motor China sales, and the sales locked up by Ford’s passenger car joint venture partner, Changan, and its commercial vehicle joint venture partner, Jiangling. Passenger cars with Changan were up 31 percent for the year, to 418,500 units, including the imported Ford Edge that climbed to 426,608. The Focus ruled the roost, tallying 296,360 units sold for the year. Commercial vehicles did 200,008 units, a three-percent gain year-on-year.
For the number junkies among you, the press release below breaks it down even further.

Ford Focus
The Ford Focus is a family of small cars, that are offered in a wide range of body styles including a four-door sedan, wagon, coupe, and three- and five-door hatchbacks. The Ford Focus had been Ford’s bargain-priced, entry-level car model for North America for many years, although the smaller Ford Fiesta has now taken that spot. Top alternatives…

Opinion: The good news and the bad news about December car sales
Filed under: Car Buying, Earnings/Financials
The holiday season saw Santa leave some nice gifts for the industry.
Pop the champagne, don’t spare the caviar. The New Year has begun with a bang. Or, more precisely, the old year ended with one, December car sales delivering a much-needed boost to an auto industry still feeling the cold chill of its worst downturn since the Great Depression.
And the last-minute push past partisan gridlock that avoided an economic meltdown (can we all now abandon last year’s tired cliché, “fiscal cliff”?) suggests that 2013 will maintain momentum. By most estimates, we’ll see new vehicle sales surge somewhere into the low to mid-15 million range this year, and a new forecast by RL Polk predicts we could be looking at volumes of 16 million by mid-decade.
That’s great news. At least it should be if you work for an automotive company or supplier or have some auto shares in your stock portfolio. If you’re a car buyer, well, the story might not be so bright. Here’s why it all depends on where you are in the consumer food chain.
Let’s look at it from the industry perspective for a moment. The holiday season saw Santa leave some nice gifts for the industry. A long line of brands, including Nissan, Audi, Porsche, Subaru, Hyundai and Jeep, set all-time records last year. Bankrupt barely three years earlier, Chrysler Group wrapped up a string of 33 consecutive monthly sales gains.
While Toyota could claim Camry as the best-selling passenger car in the US, Ford could counter with the world’s number one seller in the form of the Ford Focus, while the F-Series again topped the overall US sales chart. And Ford’s Blue Oval was the only brand to top the 2 million mark in the US last year.

The Ads for the Dodge Dart? They’re Smart, and Here’s Why [The Ad Section]
By Don Klein
![The Ads for the Dodge Dart? They’re Smart, and Here’s Why [The Ad Section] The Ads for the Dodge Dart? They’re Smart, and Here’s Why [The Ad Section]](http://blog.caranddriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/2013-Dodge-Dart-Spot.jpg)
Award-winning ad man-cum-auto journalist Don Klein knows a good (or bad) car commercial when he sees one; the Ad Section is his space to tell you what he thinks of the latest spots. The ad’s rating is depicted via the shift pattern at the bottom, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to advertising, so hit Backfires below and tell us what you think, too.
Dodge’s portfolio of television commercials for the 2013 Dart isn’t just an ad campaign; it’s a miniature film festival that both educates and entertains. It’s got action, drama, humor, excitement, and a killer soundtrack. The casting and acting are top-notch too, as are the occasional cameo celebrity appearances. Yet these commercials are so jam-packed with relevant product information, they could be used as training videos for dealership personnel. You know what’s wrong with them? Nothing.
Hitting a creative home run is difficult even when the assignment is relatively uncomplicated. But in Dart’s case, the agency (Portland-based Wieden+Kennedy), had to accomplish a number of difficult objectives, including several that are intangible. Cool, for example, is a difficult quality to bestow by simple assertion, especially when the product’s name conjures up images of an ancient, slant-six powered econobox. Yet these commercials are definitely cool.
First, a little background. Compacts account for approximately 15 to 20 percent of U.S. auto industry sales, yet Chrysler hasn’t been a player in this arena since the last Neon rolled off the assembly line in 2005. In addition to contributing unit sales, compacts play the important role of introducing buyers to the brand: It’s a lot easier to keep happy customers in the tent than it is to lure converts after they’ve had a good experience elsewhere. And while Chrysler’s been asleep at the switch regarding this critical category, its competitors clearly haven’t: Ford, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, VW, and Mazda are just some of the marques that have been honing their compact game. (Have you driven a Ford Focus—or the ST?)

And as every player knows, if you come to the party late, you’d damned well better bring something worth waiting for. But how many times has that been tried in car advertising before? A million? Three million? At least. And it rarely works, because most of the time, those commercials start out showcasing the end result of their alleged greatness and rely on a voiceover to explain how they got there. But the Dart commercials start at the beginning and show you how they achieved their goal with easy to digest, snack-sized visuals that illustrate the copy points.
And the journey isn’t always pretty. For example, in the spot called “How To Change Cars Forever”, we suffer along with the designers (all young and hipster-like) as they chug coffee, skip meals, and pull all-nighters until they’re satisfied. We cheer them on from our couches when they destroy not-quite-there sketches and prototypes, “ignore the committees,” and literally kick the finance guy out the door, all to the pumping beat of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild.” This is car building the way we would do it! Less compromise! More power! Cool apps! Tom Brady! Low price! I want one!
Of course it’s just an ad. But advertising is still the way most of us get our information about the things we buy. True, enthusiasts will dig deeper, do their own research, and listen to the voices they trust most. If that weren’t true, Car and Driver wouldn’t be in business. But if car companies relied just on enthusiast buyers, they wouldn’t be in business. Like it or not, advertising plays a major role in the auto industry, and Chrysler’s betting heavily on the Dart campaign to deliver prospects to their showrooms. I have no doubt that these commercials will do just that. Whether they’ll be happy with their Dart—we’d avoid the bummer-tastic dual-clutch gearbox, for example—is another matter entirely.
