Ford is Selling a Lot of Hybrids

Here’s a bit of good news for Ford : The Blue Oval’s sales of hybrids were up 324% in the first quarter, thanks to strong sales of several new models.

Ford now has a 16% share of the U.S. market for “electrified vehicles” – electric cars and hybrids, it said on Wednesday.

And even better for Ford, many of the hybrids it’s selling are loaded.

A serious push into the green-car market for Ford
Ford said that it sold 21,080 hybrid vehicles in the U.S. in the first quarter. That’s not a huge number when compared to something like Ford’s pickup sales, but hybrids don’t (yet) represent a huge market. Market leader Toyota sold 55,724 Priuses here in the first quarter, along with hybrid versions of several of its other models.

Clearly, Ford has a long way to go to catch up with Toyota on the hybrid front. But, just as clearly, the automaker that only a few years ago was known mostly for its pickups and SUVs has made good progress with its greener models in a short time.

It’s already paying off for Ford. The company said on Wednesday that its hybrid and plug-in versions of the Fusion sedan and C-MAX compact were helping Ford make inroads into markets that were previously cold to the Detroit automakers – like California. Ford says that 73% of Fusion Hybrid buyers in Los Angeles, and 77% in San Francisco, are coming to Ford from another brand.

What’s more, those sales are particularly profitable ones for Ford, because hybrid buyers turn out to like lots of high-tech options.

Why these sales are particularly profitable
As is true with most automakers, options packages are worth big bucks to Ford. The profit realized by the manufacturer on any given car or truck increases significantly if it’s loaded with options, and Ford has put a lot of effort into offering premium options packages that have strong appeal with buyers.

Ford says that 70% of Fusion Hybrid buyers are opting for the MyFord Touch package, Ford’s well-known touchscreen “infotainment” system, versus about 50% of buyers of the conventional gas-powered Fusion. Ford also says that Fusion Hybrid buyers select high-tech safety options, like its blind-spot alert and active parking assist systems, at about twice the rate of regular Fusion buyers.

That should add up to an outsized contribution to Ford’s bottom line — and another reason why this is a good business for Ford to be capturing.

Competing well with Toyota
As I said above, Ford still has a ways to go to catch Toyota, still the undisputed global hybrid leader. But Ford’s making progress: Ford cited data from Edmunds.com showing that the Fusion Hybrid and C-MAX Hybrid were getting “consideration” from potential buyers roughly equal to Toyota’s Camry Hybrid and Prius.

The company also pointed out that it was winning those sales with incentives that

Analysts: Strong Sales Continue for GM and Ford

By John Rosevear, The Motley Fool

Did U.S. auto sales hold strong in March?

We’ll know for sure when official numbers are reported on Tuesday, April 2, but if analysts are correct, March was indeed another solid month for car and truck sales in the U.S.

Analysts polled by Bloomberg expect an average 4.2% year-over-year increase in U.S. sales of “light vehicles” (cars, pickups, and SUVs). At least one high-profile analyst, Edmunds’ Jessica Caldwell, thinks March was likely the best month for U.S. light-vehicle sales since May of 2007.

While Ford will likely come in with an increase above the average, analysts say, the year-over-year growth winner looks set to be General Motors .

A good month as the General gathers strength
GM is expected to post a 12% year-over-year sales gain for March, according to the Bloomberg consensus analyst estimate. GM’s full-sized pickups are likely to have been a big driver of any sales increase – Kelley Blue Book analyst Alec Gutierrez estimates that overall full-sized pickup sales were up 14.9% in March, and GM is known to be aggressively clearing out pickup inventories ahead of the arrival of redesigned models later this spring.

GM’s increasing strength in cars is likely beginning to pay off as well. The Cadillac ATS and XTS sedans, both introduced last year, are set to benefit as GM’s efforts to revive its old luxury brand gather steam. And GM has more new vehicles on the way: The company is introducing 13 new Chevrolets in 2013, as well as another Cadillac, the mid-sized CTS, due at dealers this fall.

Meanwhile, Ford will likely bask in a strong result for its midsized Fusion sedan, introduced late last year. Kelley Blue Book estimates that Fusion sales will be up 24% over year-ago totals for the last-generation model, itself a strong seller.

Tight supply and strong demand at Ford
Ford is probably selling all the Fusions it can make at the moment, as its factories are at full capacity – and in some cases, beyond. The company is adding 1,200 workers at its plant in Flat Rock, Mich., to build additional Fusions starting later this year.

Ford’s production capacity challenges extend well beyond the hot new Fusion. While the impressive utilization of its factories has meant big profits in North America, the company is likely to be facing tight supplies for a few more months as it works to squeeze more production out of its existing North American factories.

That will likely keep the Blue Oval’s sales increases relatively subdued, at least for a few more months, even as new models bring nice gains to GM. But Ford shareholders can take comfort: Those busy factories should continue to drive strong North American profits for the Blue Oval.

Worried about Ford?
If you’re concerned that Ford’s turnaround has run its course, relax — there’s good reason to think that the Blue Oval still has big growth opportunities ahead. We’ve outlined those opportunities in detail, in the Fool’s …read more

Detroit: Ford Atlas Concept carries the weight of the F-150 on its shoulders

By Zach Bowman

Ford has taken a shot at the freshly unveiled Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra with the Atlas Concept. Unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, the brutish pickup gives us a glimpse at what the next-generation F-150 may bring to the table. With active wheel shutters and a “smart” chin spoiler capable of altering the vehicle’s aerodynamics on the fly, Ford says the concept offers substantially better fuel efficiency than the company’s current pickup offerings. There are no drivetrain specifics available at the moment, but Ford says the Atlas relies on a “next-generation” Ecoboost mill for power, complete with a start-stop system.

Other handy tricks include a tail gate step that doubles as a cargo cradle, which can support longer materials strapped across the vehicle’s roof. Dynamic Hitch Assist automatically lines up the pickup’s tow hitch with a trailer, while a 360-degree camera provides a perfect view of the truck’s surroundings. You can check out the full press release below for more information, as well as official shots from Ford and our live shots in the attached galleries.

Official: Ford sales in China up 21% in 2012, 43% in Dec. alone

By Jonathon Ramsey

Ford went into the Beijing Motor Show last year talking big about its “15 by 15” plan for China – introducing 15 new models to the market by 2015, doubling production capacity and its dealership network. Its stand at the show showcased four new vehicles – the EcoSport, Kuga, Edge and Explorer CUVs – along with the launch of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost in the Ford Focus (pictured) and convenience features like the Mandarin-enabled SYNC system in the new, Chinese-built Focus.

It’s all paying off so far, with Ford reporting record December sales and annual sales (all sales are wholesales in China) in the world’s largest auto market. Overall December sales were up 43 percent to 70,510 compared to 49,238 in the year before, with overall annual sales up by 21 percent to 626,616 compared to 519,390 in 2011.

Those numbers are a combination of Ford Motor China sales, and the sales locked up by Ford’s passenger car joint venture partner, Changan, and its commercial vehicle joint venture partner, Jiangling. Passenger cars with Changan were up 31 percent for the year, to 418,500 units, including the imported Ford Edge that climbed to 426,608. The Focus ruled the roost, tallying 296,360 units sold for the year. Commercial vehicles did 200,008 units, a three-percent gain year-on-year.

For the number junkies among you, the press release below breaks it down even further.

CES: Ford announces app developer program

By Chris Tutor

Ford used the occasion of CES to announce that the Ford Developer Program, the automaker’s own app developer program, would be open to anyone wanting to participate. Ford will provide its software developer kit to registered software writers who will then have access to code libraries and documentation to allow them to write apps to “enable two-way communication between mobile apps” and Sync-equipped Ford vehicles “including voice commands from the driver.”

Several apps have already been developed by a select group of beta-testing code-crunchers. Some of the more interesting ones include the Amazon Cloud Player that will allow users to access music stored in Amazon’s cloud, USA Today which will provide audio versions of the national newspaper, and BeCouply, a new app that gives entertainment suggestions to couples looking for date ideas.

Got an idea for an app but no idea how to write it? Ford has teamed with Michigan-based jacAPPS to be the “recommended mobile app development house.” Read the entire press release below.
