Video: Sick of long lines at the DMV? Hawaii might have a solution

Hawaii DMV Line

Filed under:

Hawaii is taking a novel approach to reducing the average wait time in the state’s DMV offices. All five O’ahu locations now feature live webcams showing exactly how many patrons are in line at any given time. Visitors can simply check the office’s web site ahead of time to see if its clear to stop in. The system uses cheap cameras sourced from eBay, and the change has helped shorten overall waits to as little as 10 minutes. Officials now offer pre-screening to help visitors make sure they have all the right documents before they get to the counter.

Officials are also working on a new system that will allow patrons to take a number and monitor the line’s progress remotely. The hope is that change will let visitors run errands and otherwise make better use of their time. You can check out a local news report on the changes in the video below.

Pink stripe on NC illegal immigrant licenses eyed

A new North Carolina driver’s license set to be issued to some illegal immigrants has a bright pink stripe and the bold words “NO LAWFUL STATUS,” raising concerns about whether the design will stigmatize those who show it.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced last week they would begin issuing the licenses in March following a lengthy legal review.

The Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program grants valid federal work permits to qualifying applicants brought to the U.S. as children without legal authorization.

Meanwhile, conservative lawmakers filed a bill Thursday to bar the DMV from granting the licenses next month, saying the issue needs more scrutiny.

Sponsoring Rep. Mark Brody (R-Union) says President Barack Obama‘s executive order creating the new immigration program violates the Constitution.

Virginia DMV says Iraq war veteran's vanity license plate encourages violence

A legal battle between the state and an Iraq war veteran over his personalized license plate is not over.

Sean Bujno‘s plate reads: “ICUHAJI,” which can be read to state: “I See You, Haji.” Some Arab-Americans object to that phrase.

The DMV revoked the license plate in 2011, saying it could be interpreted as socially, racially or ethically offensive or disparaging.

Chesapeake Circuit Court Judge John W. Brown ruled last November that the DMV couldn’t deny the Chesapeake man’s license plate on the basis that it denigrated individuals of a particular nationality. The judge ordered the DMV to either return the license plate to Bujno or find a permissible reason to keep it from him.

In a recent letter sent to Bujno, the DMV now says the license plate encourages violence and is vulgar.

“That couldn’t be further from the truth,” Bujno’s attorney, Andrew Meyer, told The Virginian-Pilot. “He really means it respectfully.”

Meyer said the use of the word “Haji” is not intended as a slur. He said it simply refers to someone who has made a pilgrimage to Mecca, or the hajj.

“Some might see it as a slur, but it’s not,” Meyer said. “The word haji is not obscene.”

A DMV spokesperson declined to comment on Bujno’s case, citing state privacy laws.

Meyer said Tuesday that he plans to bring the matter back before Brown to argue the DMV is again violating his client’s free-speech rights. A hearing is set for March 13.

Meyer said Brown signed his final order on Dec. 7 and it took the DMV more than three months to make a decision regarding his client’s plates.

“It never should have taken this long,” he said. “They didn’t like the plate and decided to hold on to it until they found a reason to deny it.”

The plate was displayed on Bujno’s car for more than four years before the DMV revoked it. Bujno was honorably discharged from the Army in 2009.

105-year-old California woman 'relieved' to pass driver's test with flying colors

By Cristina Corbin

Calvin Coolidge was president and Babe Ruth was having the best season of his career when Edythe Kirchmaier took her first driving test. Last week, she passed her most recent road test at the age of 105.

The California great-grandmother, who has never had so much as a parking ticket, said the test was a snap — and she never even thought about turning in her card and leaving the driving to someone else.

“I just couldn’t imagine myself without a car,” Kirchmaier told FoxNews.com. “It just didn’t feel very good.”

The Santa Barbara resident started out driving on the streets of Chicago in a Model A Ford Coupe back in 1927 while attending graduate school. That was long before the days of traffic jams and $4-per-gallon gas, and Kirchmaier said plenty of other things have changed, too.

“When I learned to drive, there were no rules of the road,” said Kirchmaier. “The roads were narrow and there were no signs saying 55 mph or anything like that.”

Through it all, Kirchmaier, who now drives a 1997 Dodge Caravan, has maintained a perfect driving record for 85 years — with no accidents, speeding tickets or parking violations to report.

“I think I’m a pretty good driver,” said Kirchmaier. “I feel safe about getting my driver’s license renewed because I’ve never had an accident.”

Kirchmaier took her latest DMV driver’s test on Jan. 23, the day after she turned 105. It’ll be good until 2017.

Born in 1908 in Dayton, Ohio, Kirchmaier moved to the Santa Barbara area with her husband after the couple were married. She has worked as a volunteer for a local non-profit, Direct Relief International, for the past 40 years.

She’s also one of the older drivers on the information superhighway: Kirchmaier, who has an active Facebook profile, is reportedly the oldest member on the social media site.
