Assurant Paying $14 Million to Settle New York Investigation

By Eric Volkman, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Assurant has reached a $14 million agreement with New York’s Department of Financial Services over its business practices in relation to forced-place loans.   Without admitting or denying any wrongdoing, the company is to pay the settlement amount, modify some of its business practices, and establish a refund opportunity program for eligible property owners, among other requirements.

Forced-place insurance providers, including Assurant, were collectively the target of a DFS investigation into the industry’s business practices. The investigation found that premiums for such insurance could be several times higher than those for voluntary insurance.

Forced-place is a type of insurance taken out by a lender on a piece of property. This occurs at times when a borrower cannot or will not continue to carry the homeowner insurance required by the terms of their mortgage.

According to the DFS, Assurant is the largest force-placed insurer in the country.

Call me maybe? DFS bond issue highlights make-whole refinancing opportunity

By Sohko Fujimoto, Contributor

DFS presented an interesting opportunity to the market recently when it demonstrated the cost of issuing new bonds, making the existing bonds whole, extending maturities, and extracting a dividend was more economical than waiting five more months to call the bonds at first-call while paying the semi-annual coupon. …read more

Server Monitoring Suggestions

By Phylum

Hi all – newb here.

We’re a Windows shop and I’m looking for something [free] that I could stand up to monitor various aspects of our servers. I’m specifically looking for something that can:

  1. verify that servers are up [& responding]
  2. verify services are up [& responding]
  3. verify remote sites are up/accessible
  4. monitor CPU & memory (warn when its above X% sustained for Y mins etc)
  5. monitor latency between this site and the remote site
  6. monitor disk usage (e.g.: warning when its down to 10% etc.)
  7. monitor things like disk queue length (like performance monitor)
  8. monitor exchange specific things like number of mailboxes left to crawl, oustanding batches & outstanding documents to index (again, like performance monitor)
  9. monitor other things like IIS, BES, Lotus Notes, DFS, IronPort – custom services etc

I’m hoping for some sort of nifty frontend that others could have up on monitor/projector to keep an eye on general health & maybe highlight ‘problem’ areas.

I don’t know, but, I suspect I’ll need something like Nagios, SmokePing and/or Edoceo to tackle this. Since I have 0 experience with any of these, I figured checking with the community first might be best.

Many thanks!
