These are keywords or phrases with the prefix “#” in front of them (i.e., #ThankYouForReading #Forbes). Sometimes words are mashed together, sometimes they’re independent. The hashtag essentially works as a filter—a way to see all responses that have included that specific word or phrase. …read more

Holtz-Eakin and Roy: The Critics Are Wrong About the Future of Free-Market Health Care Reform

By Avik Roy, Contributor

Earlier this week, the two of us—Douglas Holtz-Eakin and Avik Roy—published an op-ed for Reuters in which we outlined a market-based plan for entitlement reform and universal coverage that builds on a reformed version of Obamacare’s subsidized insurance exchanges. The piece generated a lot of media reaction, both positive and negative, so we felt obliged to respond to our critics. Is free-market reform a “surrender” to Obamacare? No. Are we ignorant of the policy issues associated with a Swiss-style regulated, subsidized insurance market? Hardly. Consider this piece our all-purpose rebuttal to Matthew Yglesias, Paul Krugman, et al. …read more

What If An iWatch Replaced Most Of The iPhone's Functions?

By Anthony Wing Kosner, Contributor

Earlier this week I wrote about “the minimum viable product that could constitute an Apple smartwatch.” I was thinking about physical constraints like size, weight and battery life and tried to imagine what could be both massively useful and also efficiently minimalist. The vision that emerged for me was one of a device that could display “micro-apps” (much like the Pebble watch) but operate in concert with one’s other iOS gadgets, particularly the iPhone. …read more

By Larry Olmsted, Contributor

Earlier this year I wrote about the much-anticipated upcoming opening of the world’s first Nobu Hotel (several others are in the works, from Miami to Dubai), inside Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. With the possible exception of the under-construction Linq Resort, compete with an London Eye-style giant observation wheel, scheduled to open on the Strip in December, the Nobu Hotel Las Vegas is easily the biggest lodging event of the year in one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, which instantly makes it big travel news. …read more

Mumford & Sons' Big Win And The Problem With The Grammys

By Leor Galil, Contributor

Earlier this evening British folk-act Mumford & Sons’ blockbuster album Babel won the top prize at the 55th Grammy Awards—Album of the Year. Although the achievement came as a surprise to the band, it didn’t feel that way to those who pay close attention to the awards: As Forbes’ Zack O’Malley Greenburg wrote earlier this week that Las Vegas oddsmakers had it as the likely winner. The group’s middle-of-the-road spin on folk is pleasing enough to garner enough mass appeal and critical accolades without inciting a lot of ire, which not only made Babel a success but also made Mumford & Sons the safest choice for Album of the Year. Grammy voters have always appeared conservative and out-of-synch with the vanguard of music and Mumford & Sons’ big win underscored those claims and validated my decision to not watch the award ceremony. …read more
