Report: Is this the 2014-15 Cadillac Escalade?

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under: Following the introduction of the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, we’re expecting General Motors won’t wait too much longer to show off the next-generation fullsize SUVs that share this platform – including the Cadillac Escalade. It’s still not clear if the next Escalade will debut for the 2014 or 2015 model years, but Carscoops has what it claims to an exclusive first look of the new Cadillac, revealing a portion of the headlight, front fascia and wheel.

Judging from this small picture, it looks like the Escalade could incorporate styling cues that we’ve seen on new Cadillac models like the ELR and the 2014 CTS, but that article says that other design details could include tall, vertical taillights similar to the CTS Wagon, staggered-width wheels and a narrower daylight opening for the side windows. The last time we saw the fourth-generation ‘Slade back in October in spy shots, the heavy camouflage prevented us from getting an idea of the luxury SUV‘s appearance, but this image and description gives us something to look forward to. Head on over to Carscoops for more potential information as well as a full rendering from back in January.

Lincoln Navigator to Live On, Will Add Turbocharged V-6 Engine, According to Reports

By Justin Berkowitz

Lincoln’s antediluvian Navigator does, apparently, still exist—and the name will live on, according to Lincoln’s global boss Matt VanDyke. (Don’t miss the irony in “antediluvian” literally meaning “so old it’s from before the Biblical flood” and the Navigator being called, uh, the Navigator.) Motor Trend originally reported that VanDyke said the Navigator would stick around even with Lincoln trying to reboot its image and lineup, and that it would add Ford’s twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine.

That Lincoln wants to keep the Navigator is somewhat unexpected. Yes, profit margins on it are thick, but it sells in miserably small numbers, its 8400 sales last year is less than half of the Cadillac Escalade’s volume. If what VanDyke describes as the “next-generation” Navigator is another F-150–based body-on-frame truck, there’s no reason not to install the EcoBoost V-6. Livery shoppers don’t care what’s under the hood, while the F-15o has shown that even macho truck buyers are fine with a boosted V-6.

The better question, though, is whether the next-generation Navigator is a massaged version of the current truck or—far more sensibly—a rebadged, upgraded Ford Explorer. Buyers may be scarce for Noah’s Ark–sized SUVs, but there’s still plenty of consumer interest in three-row luxury crossovers. Infiniti demonstrated this thinking perfectly: The Nissan-Pathfinder-based JX crossover  launched in March of last year and romped all over the truck-based (and pricier) QX56. Should Lincoln follow suit with the next Navigator, expect naturally aspirated and turbocharged EcoBoost V-6s.

Official: Infiniti <strike>JX35</strike> QX60 Hybrid confirmed for New York debut

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid crossover - rear three-quarter view

Filed under:

The next Q-ified Infiniti will be making its debut at the New York Auto Show later this month, the QX60 – the crossover formerly known as JX35. And while there aren’t many changes to the crossover in terms of design or function, the big news is that Infiniti will be revealing a production hybrid powertrain option for its seven-passenger luxury/utility vehicle.

The QX60 Hybrid uses the same powetrain found in Infiniti’s M35h gasoline-electric sedan, which couples a 2.5-liter supercharged four-cylinder engine with a 15-kilowatt electric motor, running to the wheels via continuously variable transmission. Both front- and all-wheel-drive versions of the QX60 Hybrid will be available, and Infiniti says that the more efficient CUV should be good for around 26 miles per gallon combined – an improvement of five mpg over the current JX35 with its 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6. And because the compact lithium-ion battery will be housed underneath the third row seat, we’re told that the hybrid model will still have the same passenger and cargo capacity of the non-hybrid crossover.

This will be the first three-row hybrid CUV offered in the US market, and wrapping it up in a luxury package makes a lot of sense to us, since it could be a good way of cajoling customers into absorbing the extra cost of the more expensive powertrain. (Keyword in that sentence: CUV. After all, the Cadillac Escalade is still currently available as a two-mode hybrid for the 2013 model year.) Infiniti has not released official pricing figures, but says that the hybrid model will represent a roughly $3,000 premium over the standard QX60.

We’ll have the full details in just a few weeks. For now, take a glance below for Infiniti’s official press release.

GM Recalls Nearly 55,000 Trucks And SUVs For Transmission Flaw

By Kurt Ernst

The 2013 Cadillac Escalade EXT – image: GM Corp

General Motors sells a lot of trucks and SUVs under its various brands, which include Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. Since the automaker builds so many each year, there’s no such thing as a “minor” recall. In this most recent example, GM is recalling 45,686 trucks and SUVs built between November 7, 2012 and December 18, 2012 to address a fractured park lock cable or a malformed steering column lock actuator. The net result is that affected vehicles can shift from Park with the ignition key in the “Off” position, or with the key removed entirely. Similarly, the vehicle may shift out of park without the application of the brakes, increasing the chance of a rollaway accident.

Models affected include the Cadillac Escalade (including ESV and EXT variants); the Chevy Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; and the GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL. GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the steering column assembly in affected vehicles and replace as necessary. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013, but owners of affected vehicles would be wise to contact their dealership in advance if problems are encountered with the gear selector lever.

Owners with questions or concerns can reach Cadillac at (866) 982-2339, Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 or GMC at (866) 996-9463. Alternatively, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236 for the latest information on this recall.

GM recalls fullsize truck, SUVs and vans over faulty shifter mechanism

By Jonathon Ramsey

Twelve different General Motors vehicles from the 2013 model year, up to 54,686 units in total, are being recalled over two potential issues with their steering columns. The models in question, all full-size trucks, SUVs or vans, are the: Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.

The affected vehicles were built with a fractured parking lock cable or “a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly.” As a consequence, they could shift out of park without the brake pedal being applied or with the key removed or in the off position.

A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the recall should begin on January 17. GM will notify owners, at which time they can take their vehicles to their dealers for repair free of charge. Have a look at the bulletin below for more information.

Report: Expect greater differentiation in GM's next-generation SUVs

Cadillac Escalade dashboard

General Motors says its next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade models will offer shoppers improved interior differentiation. Car and Driver recently caught up with Chris Hilts, GM‘s creative manager of interior design, who said that the cabins will all feature unique instrument panels, consoles, center stacks and switchgear moving forward. Apparently GM is now aware that consumers may be bothered by the fact that today’s $85,000 Escalade has effectively the same cabin as a $45,000 Tahoe. Hilts says SUV buyers want more refinement than their pickup purchasing counterparts – and those same buyers also want their SUVs to have more exterior differentiation between the company’s Silverado and Sierra pickup lines. Shocking.

That all sounds good to us, but we’ve heard this song and dance before. GM made big waves about how different the new-for-2013 Silverado and Sierra would look from each other, but judging by what we’ve seen so far, GM‘s stylists are painting in shades rather than with the full spectrum. For more on the what to expect out of GM‘s new SUVs, click on the C/D link below.

GM to Further Differentiate Interiors and Exteriors of Redesigned SUV Family

By Rick Kranz

On the left we have the interior of a Yukon Denali, and on the right, the interior of a Cadillac Escalade. Can you spot the differences?

General Motors has dropped the cookie cutter approach to the interiors of its full-size SUVs, beginning with the redesigned 2014 models.

“In the past we shared SUV and (pickup) truck interiors. That is not the case going forward,” said Chris Hilts, creative manager of interior design at General Motors. When the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Suburban, the GMC Yukons, and the Cadillac Escalades get their redesigns, they’ll be getting their own instrument panels, consoles, instrumentation, center stacks, knobs, materials and other design elements.

Hilts cited two reasons for the change in strategy. First, GM learned during clinics that SUV buyers want more refinement in their vehicles. (No surprise there.) However, pickup owners want a different look in the Silverado and the GMC Sierra interiors.

“We went to a lot of clinics. What we learned is that truck customers like their interior to feel like a truck. In some of our past experiences, we felt truck customers would like a passenger-car interior,” Hilts said. “That wasn’t quite the case when we started listening to what was being said.”

The front ends of Chevy’s Silverado and Suburban look awfully similar.

The second reason, refinement, also is an effort to further separate the three brands—especially Cadillac—so the interior of a $85,000 Escalade isn’t similar to a $45,000 Tahoe. For example, the 2013 Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukons, and the Cadillac Escalades share interior door panels. The 2014 models will have panels specifically designed for each brand.

“I think in the past we have not done so well with brand differentiation and we haven’t done so well with trim differentiation,” Hilts said. With the next-generation pickups and SUVs, “we tried to make a great effort to correct that.” He said there still will be some sharing, “but it will be the things that people don’t notice. We are putting the money where people do notice. That is what we need to do to be competitive, right?”

As for exterior styling, Hilts suggested that the 2014 Chevrolet and GMC SUVs will be noticeably different from each brand’s pickups. Today, the front-end styling of the Tahoe and the Suburban are nearly identical to the Silverado, as is the front treatment for the Sierra and Yukon models. Hilts said if a Chevrolet dealer places a 2014 Silverado and 2014 Tahoe side-by-side on the floor, “they will appear as completely different interiors and they will look like completely separate vehicles.”
