Volkswagen Group Green Lights Bentley’s SUV Project

By Jens Meiners

A Bentley SUV will go on sale in 2016, but it likely won’t look like this early design proposal of the EXP 9 F concept.

It’s official: the Bentley SUV will happen. Today, Volkswagen Group chief Martin Winterkorn declared that the long-rumored off-roader—previewed by the unfortunately styled EXP 9 F concept at the 2012 Geneva auto show—will go on sale from 2016. British Prime Minister David Cameron’s presence added a political dimension to the announcement, highlighting Bentley’s investment of more than £800 million, roughly $1.2 billion, which will see the SUV built in Crewe and generate 1000 jobs in the U.K.

No further details were provided, but Bentley did say, however, that the new model “will be a thoroughbred Bentley” and “the most luxurious and most powerful SUV in the market.” The SUV moving to production will be a late triumph for Wolfgang Dürheimer, the recently dismissed head of Audi’s R&D program, who was Bentley’s CEO when work on the SUV model commenced.

Echoing Dürheimer’s remarks of last summer, Bentley maintains that the reaction of customers to a Bentley SUV has been “extremely positive.” Nevertheless, the vehicle will receive a complete makeover; design chief Luc Donckerwolke is in charge of a comprehensive restyling that will address some of the concerns about the model’s design.

What we know is that the Bentley SUV will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB architecture, originally designed by Audi and to be shared with the next generation of Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg, and Porsche Cayenne. It will be available with a range of powertrain options that will include a hybrid, a V-8 diesel, and a twin-turbo W-12. Competition will come from the likes of Range Rover, an upcoming Jaguar SUV, and top-drawer versions of the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7. Perhaps most interesting will be the dynamic between Bentley and Lamborghini, as Audi CEO Rupert Stadler announced that the Italians’ Urus SUV project will arrive on showroom floors roughly at the same time as Bentley’s SUV. Just how the VW Group plans to position two similar models with such historic badges and astronomical sticker prices will be fascinating to say the least.

Honda, Acura Tease a Pair of Concepts Ahead of Shanghai Debuts [2013 Shanghai Auto Show]

By Andrew Wendler

Honda and its upmarket arm, Acura, each will unveil a concept vehicle at the Shanghai auto show. As is the current trend, the images the brands provided are highly stylized, emphasizing the overall shape and a few key character lines, but remaining careful not to give away specific details like the door count or B-pillar placement. Even so, both concepts bear a strong resemblance to the brands’ existing crossovers: Honda’s CR-V and Acura’s MDX and RDX. (There’s also a hint of Honda’s Urban SUV concept.) Honda says both concepts will preview its and Acura’s future styling for Chinese-market offerings, a glimpse into the future we’ll get to see when the show cars are revealed next weekend.

Land Rover to Use All-Aluminum Unibody for a Number of Upcoming Models

By Jens Meiners

Land Rover is refining its lineup with fresh styling, high-tech platforms, and downsized engines. This strategy is becoming visible in the brand’s new lineup, which includes an entirely new Range Rover and an equally new Range Rover Sport. What’s somewhat less visible, however, is the streamlining that’s taking place within the brand’s platform portfolio.

Up until recently, the brand used four different platforms: the Ford-derived EUCD platform for the Land Rover LR2 and the Range Rover Evoque; a standalone platform for the ancient Defender; an integrated body-on-frame platform for the LR4 and the Range Rover Sport; and a standalone platform derived from the first-generation BMW X5 for the now defunct, third-gen Range Rover. In the near future, Land Rover will keep the Evoque and the LR2 on their current platforms; every other model will use a variations of the new, lightweight D7 platform launched with the new Range Rover.

We’re hearing that this architecture will accommodate an upcoming long-wheelbase version of the Range Rover, which is likely to be unveiled in 2014. The LWB Range will be tailored specifically to the Chinese market, but there is a historic precedent: The first-gen Range Rover also was offered in long-wheelbase form. Land Rover has confirmed a diesel-hybrid for the Range Rover, and we hear it will be based on the brand’s 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel. It likely won’t be offered in the U.S., however, even though its consumption could shame the gasoline-hybrid offerings by other automakers.

Land Rover DC100 concept.

In addition to the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models already introduced on the new D7 underpinnings, this platform will serve as the foundation for two new vehicles: the next-generation Discovery/LR4 and the next-generation Defender. We understand the the LR4 will continue to move upmarket and that it will revert to the Discovery moniker next year, when we expect the new model to arrive.

The next Defender, however, is perhaps the most difficult challenge for Land Rover to tackle. The current model, essentially the same vehicle that was launched in 1948, is an automotive icon with a rugged appeal matched by few other vehicles on the market. It was last sold in the U.S. market in 1997; it carries on dutifully in Europe and elsewhere.

For more than a decade now, Land Rover has been discussing whether it’s worth continuing to update the Defender in order to meet today’s safety and emissions standards. Consistently strong customer demand has provided the anwer so far: a resounding yes. The DC100 concept, first shown at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show and intended to test the waters for a successor, was strongly disliked by the target group, and …read more

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s Pricing Leaks Online, Including New Diesel

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit

Pricing for Jeep’s updated-for-2014 Grand Cherokee SUV has found its way online, appearing first on a Jeep forum. Pricing for the mildly refreshed Grand Cherokee is, for the most part, unexciting and predictable, but the leaked info gives away one exciting tidbit: how much the SUV’s newly optional diesel V-6 engine will cost. The short answer is that it will cost quite a bit.

If the source of the info on the forum is legit, buyers can look forward to shelling out an extra $4500 for the Jeep’s new 240-hp, 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6. Pricing for the Grand Cherokee’s two-wheel-drive/diesel combo wasn’t provided, but we assume the diesel will require the same outlay whether it’s powering the rear wheels or all four. From the looks of things, the diesel won’t be available on the Grand Cherokee’s volume and entry-level Laredo trim level; buyers will need to step up to the $38,790 Limited-spec model to unlock the ability to pay even more for the diesel V-6. When pressed for comment, a Jeep representative wouldn’t confirm the veracity of the diesel pricing, but did provide the base prices for each 2014 Grand Cherokee trim level:

  • Laredo: $29,790 + $2000 for four-wheel drive
  • Limited: $36,790 + $2000 for four-wheel drive
  • Overland: $43,990 + $3000 for four-wheel drive
  • Summit: $48,990 + $3000 for four-wheel drive

So the diesel’s price might not be official yet, but given that the base prices provided to us by Jeep match those in the forum post, it’s a pretty safe bet the $4500 figure is correct. If you’re wondering why the diesel costs so much, it’s because diesel engines cost more to produce; just look at the diesel iterations of cars like the Volkswagen Jetta (ignoring the VW’s base, de-contented four-cylinder model) or Audi Q7—both models’ oil-burners cost buyers between $4050 and $5200 extra.

Volkswagen Adds R-Line Trim to 2014 Tiguan and Touareg Models [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

By John Lamm

2014 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line

Volkswagen has gotten into the habit lately of adding a little visual zest to its lineup without piling on more ponies. Throughout the past year, VW has introduced the stylish R-Line trim to both its Beetle and its CC. At this year’s Detroit auto show, the brand is debuting the same treatment for the Tiguan and the Touareg.

The Tiguan R-Line builds off the SEL model and can be had with front-wheel drive or 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with power arriving from the VW Group’s ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbo four. R-Line Tiguans ride on 19-inch aluminum wheels with low-profile all-season tires and a sport-tuned suspension. Spotter’s-guide exterior additions include chrome-trimmed body-color side skirts, add-on fender flares, a specific rear spoiler, xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, and the requisite R-Line grille badge. Climb into an R-Line Tiguan and notable additions to be found include a new scuff plate, aluminum pedals, a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, metallic-finish trim on the dash and door, and a black headliner. Sounds will stream from a 400-watt, eight-speaker-plus-subwoofer Fender audio system.

The Touareg R-Line makes use of the Lux trim level, and it provides a choice in engine: the 333-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 or, for diesel fans, the 225-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel. Both come with an eight-speed automatic, standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive, and sport suspension. This R-Line runs on 20-inch aluminum wheels and the exterior eye candy includes a new lower front facia, side skirts, LED taillights, oval exhaust tips and, of course, the critical R-Line badging. Interior upgrades include shiny black– and aluminum trim for the doors, center console, and dash; as well as an R-Line flat-bottom steering wheel; aluminum sport pedals; and stainless-steel scuff plates.

Pricing information isn’t available as of yet, but we would discourage rushing to the nearest VW dealer to find out—the 2014 Tiguan and Touareg R-Lines won’t go on sale until the fall.

Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

Now in its second generation, the Mercedes-Benz GL Class is the brand’s full-size crossover SUV offering, with seating for seven across three rows. Polished Utility Impresses, Just Not At The Pump

With its subtle badging out of sight, and from a distance greater than 30 feet, Volkswagen’s flagship Touareg Hybrid can hardly be differentiated from its entry-level Touareg V6 sibling. But pop the hood or take it for a quick spin, and the gasoline-electric utility quickly reveals itself as one of the most complex vehicles ever to grace the German automaker’s showroom.

Predictably, there is always downside to such technical wizardry. Comprehensive development and revolutionary components, including a large nickel metal-hydride battery pack, don’t come cheap. As a result, the Touareg Hybrid is the most expensive vehicle in today’s Volkswagen lineup, with a base price eclipsing the standard Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and even the Porsche Cayenne.

So why would someone spend more than $60,000 to put this particular Volkswagen in his or her driveway? To answer that question and to learn more about the automaker’s flagship softroader, we spent a full week with it.

Next-Gen Acura MDX Headed to Motown as a Concept [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

Acura today released a vague sketch of the 2014 MDX prototype it’ll be revealing at the 2013 Detroit auto show. Although very few details were given, Acura says the next-generation MDX (spy photos here!) will utilize an “aero sculpture” design language and feature alluring proportions with smooth, arching bodylines. What we see is a longer, leaner profile; a far more elegant side glass treatment; a steeper rake to the backlight; and ramped-up personality in the front fascia. Oh, and big honkin’ arches over the wheels, implying some of the excellent dynamics the current one delivers but doesn’t advertise.

Comparison Test: Acura MDX vs. Audi Q7 3.0T, BMW X5 xDrive35i, Land Rover LR4 HSE, Lexus GX460
Instrumented Test: 2010 Acura MDX

Considering Honda and Acura’s track record of revealing so-called concepts and prototypes in high-profile settings and then ushering them into production shortly thereafter with only a few changes, it’s a good bet that the MDX prototype we see in Detroit will be a fairly accurate representation of the real deal. We’ll have official images and full info covering the 2014 MDX prototype the moment the sheet comes off next month.
