Eric Hammond: Using An AWS CloudFormation Stack To Allow "-" Instead Of "+" In Gmail Email Addresses

Launch Stack

Launch a CloudFormation template to set up a stack of AWS resources to fill
a simple need: Supporting Gmail addresses with “-” instead of “+”
separating the user name from the arbitrary tag strings.

The CloudFormation stack launched by the template consists of:

  • ELB (Elastic Load Balancer)
  • Auto Scaling Group
  • EC2 instance(s) running Postfix on Ubuntu set up by a user-data script
  • Security Group allowing ELB to connect to the instances
  • CloudWatch CPU high/low alarms
  • Auto Scaling scale up/down policies.
  • SNS (Simple Notification Service) topic for notification of Auto
    Scaling events
  • Route53 Record Set

This basic stack structure can be used as a solution for a large
number of different needs, but in this example it is set up as an SMTP
email relay that filters and translates email addresses for Google
Apps for Business customers.

Because it uses Auto Scaling, ELB, and Route53, it is scalable and able
to recover from various types of failures.

If you’re in a rush to see code, you can look at the CloudFormation
template and the initialization script run from
the user-data script.

Now, let’s look a bit more in depth at the problem this is solving and
how to set up the solution.

Background

If you have a Gmail address of user@example.com, then email messages
sent to addresses of the form user+ANYTHING@example.com will also be
delivered to you. You can use any email address string after the plus
sign.

Google describes this feature in a blog post:

Append a plus (“+”) sign and any combination of words or numbers
after your email address. For example, if your name was
hikingfan@gmail.com, you could send mail to
hikingfan+friends@gmail.com or hikingfan+mailinglists@gmail.com

This is is useful for tracking where you have entered your email
address and findingout which services allow it to be used for spam.
If an email variation starts getting abused, you can automatically
filter it out in Gmail.

The Problem

Unfortunately, many web sites do not allow an email address with a “+”
when registering and will reject any attempts to use this. I don’t
know if they are trying to prevent people from using unique tracking
addresses or if they just don’t know the specification for a valid
email address, but the end result is the same.

If we could just use a dash (-) instead of a plus, we could enter
unique tracking email addresses in each site registration.

Another example for why plus can be bad: My son added “+psat” to his
email address when filling out the written PSAT so he could track who
they sold his email address to (apparently every college out
there). The data entry person typed a “t” instead of a “+”, so
colleges started sending emails to the wrong address.

Prerequisites

The approach presented here works with custom domains set up with
Google Apps for Business. You can’t use it for individual, free
“@gmail.com” addresses without some additional work and a separate
domain name registration.

As currently written, the CloudFormation stack requires that you
already have your domain DNS handled by Route53, as the template will
insert a new DNS entry for the email relay. This functionality could
be removed from the template if you don’t use Route53.

What the heck kind of connection is this? And best way to repair?

Quick back story. House was built in 1943, still has all original plumbing with some very rigged add-ons which has been fun. I have slowly been replacing drains and their piping with PVC as it needs to be repaired. Everything else is all galvanized. All things considered in this older house, plumbing has been what I have had to repair the most (surprise surprise).

Anyway, I do not have a whole lot of plumbing and it is easily accessible in the unfinished basement. One part that was added on I am sure is the washer connections in the basement that also supply a utility sink that will soon be gone hopefully!

I plan on completely redoing all plumbing over to copper but need to get better at doing that before I spend all that money 🙂

The way that the washer is connected from the hot and cold supply pipes is that it was “tapped in” to the horizontal pipes that are running at the joists and going to sinks upstairs. I have not ever seen it done this was and cannot find ANYTHING that is remotely like this online. It is almost like the drilled into the pipe then used some sort of connection that is held to the horizontal pipe with a u-bolt. I am guessing it is not much more complicated that there is a grommet sealing the connection to the pipe but I want to be sure before I take it apart because once I do, I will have to fix it somehow.

A leak has developed at the connection point and is losing about 1/2 gallon a day (into a bucket of course!). A couple days ago I was working in the basement with my teenage son and he grabbed onto the vertical pipe and torqued it a bit more (and I of course chewed him for it!) and suddenly my faucets were very low flow. Come to find out they had been clogged with some sort of seal it looked like so I am thinking it is from that.

Here is the picture. The pipe running from 1:00 to 7:00 as it appears in the picture is the horizontal hot water line coming from the water heater. The vertical pipe goes down and the washer supply line connects to it. If anyone can tell me what I can do to temp fix this I would be grateful. Thanks again.

BTW – I know it looks like it is leaking from the actual connection point with the vertical pipe, it is not – it is leaking from the top.

Cop hating NAACP nominates cop killer Mumia Abu Jamal as an “un sung hero”

It is very sad, but unfortunately not surprising, to see the depth to which the once proud and heroic National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has sunk. The NAACP which was established in 1909 as a direct counter to the Klu Klux Klan has steadily searched for a raison d’etre in view of its increasing irrelevance as a victim of its own success. The once respectable organization has gone from a reliable Republican voting group to one that is now home to radical anti-Americans longing for socialism.

Politically the NAACP is as totally owned today as their slave ancestors where owned by THEIR masters. Just as the plantation owners of the old South, the owners of today’s NAACP demand total and unwavering obedience. This fact of political life for the NAACP is the only possible explanation for its latest and most disgusting public position.

The NAACP has nominated Mumia Abu-Jamal a convicted murderer who killed Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981 as an “Un-Sung Hero!” The circumstances of the murder are exceptionally unambiguous. The murderer in this case has had his conviction reviewed and affirmed more than two dozen times over the past thirty years. He has not won a single appeal. He should have been executed a long time ago. His cause has been a rallying point for America hating swine like Ed Asner and Mike Farrell and the City Council of Paris which has named a street after him.

The murderer who was born Wesley Cook took a made up Muslim name to make certain the world knows how much he hates America and all it stands for. Taking a Muslim name signifies that he stands with the Muslim world which even to this day takes slaves and was a major part of the slave trade that victimized the ancestors of his supporters at the NAACP.

Of course none of this counts for anything when NAACP types are falling all over themselves to suck up to the White liberal world. ANYTHING that offends mainstream Americans is something people like this will gladly commit.

Nominating a cop killer as a un-sung hero is just the latest shameful act from a now very shameful NAACP. Disgusting is the word that comes to mind.

It’s getting ever more difficult to differentiate between the bad guys and the good guys in our government these days. Our president is literally getting away with murder, and NO ONE is doing ANYTHING about it.

The Benghazi SCANDAL has generally been dismissed by most of the American public because the press effectively refuses to say much about it. Obama’s crew successfully made a laughable circus out of the birth certificate SCANDAL, so that now most anyone who mentions the problem is instantly labeled a “birther” and promptly discredited. Nevertheless, the evidence confirming it to be a total forgery is OVERWHELMING. In fact, experts armed with both solid science and impeccable reputations now amass a crowd of sources worldwide who are willing to stake their reputations on the fact of its falsity. Beyond that, our president has spent a fortune in court trying to bury the whole matter, rather than allowing that inquiry process to play out to what should be a happy ending for him (if he is telling the truth).

There is the SCANDAL of breathtakingly lavish spending of our tax dollars on entertainment for our self-indulgent president, his family, and friends (in the face of our terminally inflated national debt that adds insult to injury upon every taxpayer in this country who is fighting hard just to stay alive). There is the SCANDAL of his excessive, fiat governing and non-transparency in circumventing the checks and balances that were so necessarily built into our beautiful Constitution. And there is the SCANDAL of the personal oversight and CONTROL he has demanded and achieved regarding our freedoms of expression, protest, and communication in instances he deems as times of ‘national emergency.’

The above-mentioned problems and a host of others accompany the administration of this man about whom we still know so little. And, in the midst of the sea of voices of warning and protest now around us, no one seems to be DOING much of anything to retard the progress of this monster.

I think it’s because most of what’s left of ‘We the People’ are not putting our feet down and insisting upon the responsible accountability of our elected leaders. And our leaders of either party won’t do anything until the cry of our protest becomes louder than the intimidating thunder of a biased press. It’s because politicians are more afraid of losing their fat jobs than they are dedicated to accommodating and defending what is right and good.

No matter what the causal problem really is, though, the sad and frightening fact remains that no individual in the history of our nation has ever held more precariously unbridled power over her people. Never before have so many in authority, whether voluntarily or by force, held their peace in the face of such egregious abuse of trust and leadership. I have never read of or imagined a darker time in the history of this wonderful country.

Like child molesters and drug addicts, liberals can’t be cured of their addiction. They want to run our lives in every way possible. New York City’s Mayor Nanny Bloomberg is one such liberal. He won election twelve years ago by pretending to be another Rudy Giuliani. But even though he knew he was legally limited to two terms, Nanny’s liberal lust for power was ultimately just as strong as a fish-eyed child molester’s lust for gratification. Nanny got the also term-limited City Council to say: “Oops, the people made a mistake; and as their friends, we’ll fix it for them – there term limits – are all gone!”

An emboldened Nanny and friends have since prohibited smoking in public parks and beaches, changed the lunch menus in schools to “healthy portions of salad” that nobody eats, and set their sights on lowering the salt intake of their subjects by 25%.

Nevertheless, these regulations, like the regulations all liberals force on us, were not enough; they never are.

Finding themselves in painful “legislative withdrawal,” Nanny’s gang NEEDED to pass another edict. They decided that no one should be allowed to drink more than 16 oz. of soda from one container. That this will destroy small businesses all over the city means nothing to a liberal who is full “Jones.”

Just next door in Connecticut, another liberal addict has stepped up to challenge Nanny for the crown of “Ultimate arrogant liberal – Northeast sector.”

Democrat Betsy Ritter, an addicted Waterford, Ct., liberal has proposed a “hoarder’s tax.”  Under this formula, the state would dictate to corporations how much money they would be allowed to keep without spending it on the  “job creating”  programs liberals don’t know how to create.

An undoubtedly glassy-eyed Ritter has her fangs ready to bite the necks of two “evil” nuclear power plants SHE doesn’t believe should be holding as much of their own money as their stockholders do. You can’t make this up.

If there is a difference between these liberals and child molesters or drug addicts, it is very hard to find. All three will do ANYTHING to satisfy their lusts.
