Honda Teases Earnestly Named “Urban SUV Concept” [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

Honda has announced that it will be showing an urban SUV concept called the Urban SUV concept at January’s Detroit auto show. According to the very sparse release accompanying the teaser image you see here, the Urban SUV features a profile reminiscent of a “sporty and dynamic” SUV as well as a “spacious, functional interior.” Oh, and it’s global, which means people from different countries probably will know how to drive it.

Instrumented Test: 2013 Honda Accord 2.4L Manual
Comparison Test: 2013 Ford Escape vs. CR-V, Tucson, Sportage, CX-5, RAV4

From what we can make out in the sketch, the Urban SUV concept looks like a crossover. It’s level of urbanity is still unknown, but Honda says that it’s compact, so we know that it will definitely fit inside a city. Check back in early January for full details and photography of the Urban SUV concept live from the show floor in Detroit.

Chevrolet Previews 2014 Silverado Pickup on Facebook

2014 Chevrolet SIlverado
Chevrolet has announced that it will be revealing the all-new, 2014 Silverado pickup on Thursday. Of course, the bulletin also included inspirational language describing the new truck as stronger, smarter, and more capable—because a weaker, dumber, and less-capable Silverado obviously makes very little sense.

Besides offering colorful descriptors for the next Silverado, Chevrolet also posted a blurry image of what appears to be a partially camouflaged example of the new pickup driving through a cloud. Or maybe it’s just in a room filled with steam. Either way, the image doesn’t reveal much beyond what we’ve already seen in spy photos of the 2014 Silverado or a closely cropped image of the rig’s headlight. Check back here Thursday for full details and images of the newest Chevy pickup.

U.S. Traffic Deaths Decline in 2011; Fatality Rate Hits All-Time Low

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has completed its analysis of traffic data from last year, and the findings are astonishing. In 2011, fewer people died on U.S. roads than at any time since 1949. Even better: once you factor in the amount of time drivers spent behind the wheel, NHSTA says that the 2011 fatality rate was as low as…

Jaguar’s C-X75 Falls Victim To The Global Economy, Other Priorities

Jaguar’s C-X75 Concept – image: Jaguar Land Rover
If you thought Jaguar’s stunning C-X75 concept was among the most beautiful cars ever penned by the brand, you weren’t alone. In fact, the reception by both the public and the media was so universally positive that Jaguar made the bold decision to put the car into production for release in late 2013 or early 2014.
Unlike the concept, which was an extended-range electric car powered by “microturbine” engines, the production C-X75 would use a parallel hybrid setup, relying on a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors for propulsion. The microturbine cars was still being developed, but with the goal of launching a track-only variant.
Now comes word from What Car?, via Motor Authority, that the C-X75 project has been cancelled. Blame it on the current state of the global economy, which really doesn’t favor the launch of another supercar expected to price north of $1 million. Jaguar also has higher priorities these days, such as launching its highly-anticipated F-Type roadster and helping family brand Land Rover bring the new Defender to market.
Though the C-X75 may be gone for now, it won’t be forgotten. Of five built, three are being retained for future development, and its likely that components or systems developed for the C-X75 will make their way into production Jaguars. Meanwhile, the two C-X75s that do make it into private hands are destined to become the most highly prized collector Jaguars on the planet (except, perhaps, for the XJ13 racer).

Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion heralded Ford’s comeback in a number of ways and helped earn a place back on American shopping lists for a high-value family sedan—or a smartly conceived hybrid, as the Fusion Hybrid sedan. Essentially replacing the once-best-selling Ford Taurus for 2006, the first Fusion set a new look for Ford with a very prominent…

Scion xB

The small, slab-sided Scion xB subcompact “box” was really the car that launched Scion, Toyota’s youth brand for the U.S. market only, in 2004. The brand targeted Generation Y buyers (born from 1980 to 1994) as a way to address the gradual aging of Toyota’s core buyers. To the company’s surprise, the xB outsold the…

Ford Taurus

The Ford Taurus was positively ground-breaking—and true to the marketing, a truly different kind of American car—when it was first introduced for 1986. With styling that was completely different than anything else available on the market, combined with a very space-efficient front-wheel-drive design, the Ford Taurus suddenly made a lot…

Fisker Looking for Strategic Partners, Wants to Maintain Relationship With A123 Systems

2012 Fisker Karma EcoSport
Fledgling automaker Fisker Automotive, which produces the stunning-looking Karma electric sedan, is seeking strategic partners and has employed the services of an investment firm to help it do so. The recently embattled company’s move—first reported by The Wall Street Journal, and confirmed to Car and Driver by a Fisker representative—is hardly surprising, and is apparently part of a push to shore up the supply chain for the upcoming Atlantic sedan. Fisker’s had some ups and downs lately—much of the tumult can be traced to A123 Systems, the brand’s bankrupt battery supplier—and so it is looking for partners willing to share both cash and technology.
The representative we spoke with wouldn’t say which companies Fisker is looking to work with, but confirmed statements the CEO made to WSJ that the brand is in “serious discussions with multiple strategic partners.” We’re told that a specific suitor isn’t being sought, and that Fisker is exploring all of its options with a variety of different partners, which could include other OEMs or suppliers. The automaker already has partnerships with GM for the range-extending four-cylinder engine used in the Karma, as well as BMW, which will supply turbocharged four-cylinders for the Atlantic. Fisker plans to build quite a few more Atlantics than Karmas, and the main thrust of the company’s partner search is to gain larger economies of scale for the new model.

So what about A123, Fisker’s battery supplier? The firm was sold this weekend to a Chinese company, but Fisker intends to keep A123′s business. We’re told Fisker is looking to renegotiate its contract with A123′s new owners, and that the automaker is pleased that the  sale was resolved quickly.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

Jay Leno Samples Lexus’ Latest IS 350: Video

Back before the internet, auto manufacturers had it quite a bit easier when it came time to invite journalists for press trips. First the world’s big-book glossies would get their plane tickets, followed by the major newspapers and secondary magazines, followed by everybody else. These days it’s not so cut-and-dried; sure, the magazines still get long-lead invites well in advance of everyone else, largely because it takes longer to put together print publications.
Then come the automakers’ favorite websites, many of which have been established for years and are staffed with those who formerly worked at the big magazines. These days, that list is also likely to include celebrities and “lifestyle magazines,” whose editors know little to nothing about cars and technology, but can dictate what’s cool to legions of trend-humping fashion lemmings, thus (in theory) driving sales of a particular model.
Missing from the invite list are dozens of smaller sites, who know about cars and how to cover them, but who lack the celebrity-name-draw. In the video above, it’s clear to us why Jay Leno got the invite to drive the new IS in Japan and we didn’t; after all, he’s Jay -freaking-Leno, and no one can question his passion for anything with wheels or his wide and diverse fan base.
On the other hand, we think that celebrity status comes with a price; if Lexus is going to fly you to Japan, at least cover the car you’re expected to test in some detail. Tell us, for example, that you’re driving the Lexus IS 350, but that Lexus will also introduce a new IS 250, IS 300h hybrid and IS F Sport, too. Give us a bit more than the fact that the new car rides on a stretched platform and sports a more rigid chassis than the model it replaces. In fact, if you’re driving the car on a racetrack. why not benchmark it against the old one, so we get a sense for how much better the new IS 350 will be?
We have nothing against Leno, and we’re certainly not questioning his ability to review a car when he has the time to do so properly. What you see here, though, is the direction that more and more manufacturers are moving in, and we can see a day when all car reviews will be done via celebrity voice overs and video edited down to digestible sound bites. We may know more about cars, but let’s face it: Justin Bieber reaches a wider audience. That’s the future, and admittedly we’re not so crazy about it.

Ford Confirms 3.2-Liter Diesel for 2014 Ford Transit

When Ford announced earlier this year that a then-unspecified diesel engine would be among the powertrain options offered in its full-size Transit van, the smart money was on a federalized version of the 3.2-liter Duratorq inline-five already serving in the Transit and the Ranger in overseas markets. Scheduled to go on sale late next year as a 2014 model, the full-size Transit—not to be confused with the smaller Transit Connect or the Transit Connect Wagon passenger van—will offer the turbo-diesel along with several gasoline engine options, all mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. For the U.S. market, Ford dropped the Duratorq name in favor of its Power Stroke moniker in hopes of aligning the new five-cylinder diesel with the popular and long-running V-8 diesels currently found in Ford’s full-size pickups.
Assembled in Ford’s Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, the 3.2-liter diesel produces 197 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque in European specification—expect those numbers to carry over when the van arrives stateside. With 90 percent of peak torque available from 1,700 to 3,500 rpm, the inline-five diesel’s torque curve is as flat as the landscape surrounding the Kansas City plant where they’ll be assembled.

Feature Test: 2010 Ford Transit Connect

It’s worth noting that said facility also cranks out Ford’s popular F-150 pickup, a high sales-volume vehicle that could benefit greatly from a modern, lightweight, and efficient diesel. Although it wouldn’t win any races so equipped, it could be a step in helping Ford achieve those pesky CAFE requirements. Pressed for comment, Ford replied, “We are only talking about Transit now.”

Kia Exec Says Brand Will Compete with Luxury Automakers by 2017

Hyundai spent the previous decade boasting that by 2010, the Korean automaker would be a serious competitor to Mercedes-Benz and BMW. It didn’t happen. Now it’s Kia’s turn. Kia vice chairman Hyoung-Keun Lee announced the automaker will become a premium global player over the next five years. The models will be on the same level in terms of style and sophistication as the top German and Japanese brands. The mind-boggling statement was made last week at a dealer meeting in New Zealand, where Kia’s local arm issued a press release saying as much.
Industry reaction is summed up in four words: Here we go again. Hyundai owns Kia, but it appears the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, or in Hyundai’s case, still trying to accomplish. Specifically, Hyundai still is attempting to gain respect for its big premium model, the Equus.
So what’s the basis for Kia’s premium intent?
Kia’s flagship is a big, attractive rear-drive sedan, called the K9 in Korea and the Quoris in other markets. The redesigned car went on sale this year in Korea; U.S. sales are expected in 2014. The K9 shares its architecture with the Equus and is expected to sticker here at around $55,000. Under consideration is the sleek rear-drive GT concept that debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. Kia displayed the concept this year in Los Angeles, New York, and other cities to gauge reaction.

Early last decade, Hyundai made it clear that it wanted to create a premium brand for the U.S. market. But analysts, auto journalists, and many Hyundai dealers signaled the same message to Hyundai’s executives in Korea: Hyundai is a work in progress. Specifically, the brand consists of low-priced models, styling is unimaginative, and Hyundai quality remains questionable at best in the eyes of U.S. buyers. Who can forget the problems with the 1980s Excel? Quality and styling have been licked, but Hyundai still is perceived as an alternative to Chevrolet and Ford.
Instead of creating a separate luxury brand, a costly proposition, Hyundai sells the Equus and the Genesis under the Hyundai banner. The Equus starts at just more than $60,000 and is aimed at the Mercedes-Benz E-class. The $35,000 Genesis targets the Mercedes C-class. Neither car has caught on with traditional luxury-car buyers.
Kia’s U.S. history is shorter and the long-term quality of its products is inconclusive—U.S. sales began in 1994. Like its parent company, Kia also  is viewed as a Chevy and Ford alternative. Only in recent years has the styling become a selling point, thanks to the hiring of Peter Schreyer, who previously penned Volkswagens and Audis.

Comparison Test: 2011 Hyundai Equus vs. 2010 Lexus LS460L
Short Take Road Test: 2011 Kia Optima SX Turbo
Instrumented Test: 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec 5.0 Sedan

Contrast that to Toyota’s strategy leading up to Lexus. The Japanese brand took small steps, building its U.S. reputation in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s on value and quality. After proving itself for about three decades, Lexus was launched in 1989. By that time, many Toyota owners were not hesitant to spend more and move up market.
Kia can boast about its intent to market premium cars, but in the eyes of U.S. buyers, Kia remains an unknown quantity. There are no shortcuts to earning a good reputation, which is mandatory to attract premium car owners.
Kia wading into the segments occupied by Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes by 2017? That’s way too soon. The year 2025 might be a more realistic target for success.

2012 Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black Edition: Once You Go Carbon Black, You’ll Never Go Back

2012 Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition
We understand that the Vanquish has replaced Aston’s long-running DBS as the “high-volume” flagship for 2013, but we recently had a chance for a last fling with a very special DBS. Special, that is, because it is draped in a shimmering, black hue so fetching that you may wonder why every Aston doesn’t come painted this way. The metallic flakes sparkle in the light as if saying “hello gov” and “piss off” in the same blink. Onlookers twist to catch a glimpse of the sparkling body that’s shrink-wrapped around the 5.9-liter V-12 they just heard. Aston says it takes 50 man-hours to apply the paint. READ MORE ››
