Volkswagen Routan Minivan Not Dead Yet, But Future Looks Bleak

Saying that the Volkswagen Routan has not lived up to expectations would be a bit of an understatement. When the model debuted five years ago at the Chicago auto show, VW hoped to move 45,000 of the reworked Chrysler minivans per year. Um, not so much: The first eleven months of this year saw just 9923 of the vans find homes. The people movers are moving so slowly off dealer lots, in fact, that VW has halted production until its bloated inventory thins out.
Recent speculation has it that the Chrysler-produced minivan has been or is about to be terminated, based on Chrysler documents revealing that its Windsor, Ontario, facility—home to production for the Routan as well as the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Caravan—produced no VWs in November. But further research reveals that Chrysler hasn’t produced a VW-badged vehicle since July, which is right around the time VW models change over to the new model year. And a quick look at Volkswagen’s consumer site reveals that its minivan is the only 2012 model year left in the U.S. lineup. (Get one while they’re hot!)
If demand for the Routan were to pick up, production would follow accordingly, at least through next year. That’s based on the production agreement between Volkswagen and Chrysler that is set to expire at the end of 2013, at which point the future of the Routan becomes considerably bleaker. Our best intelligence suggests that the Routan will come to an end at the same time as its welcome in Ontario.

Some time thereafter, we expect VW will introduce a replacement for its minivan, and that’s likely to come in the form of the three-row crossover that was confirmed by CEO Martin Winterkorn earlier this year. Known internally as B-SUV, it will be previewed by a concept set to debut next month at the 2013 Detroit auto show. The production version is expected to hit showroom floors in 2015.

World’s Oldest Surviving Production Ford Comes Home: Bill Ford’s New 1903 Model A

World's Oldest Production Ford, a 1903 Model A, with Chairman Bill Ford
They say depreciation begins the minute an owner drives a new car home. But if the car survives beyond a normal lifespan, it stops depreciating and begins acquiring value as a collectible. The process can consume a lot of time, as illustrated by this 1903 Ford Model A. New, its base price was $850. Last October, it sold at auction for $264,000, and to a noteworthy new owner: William Clay Ford, Jr., executive chairman of the board for Ford Motor Company and Henry’s great-grandson.
1903 Ford Model A Driver's SeatMr. Ford is only the sixth owner of the Model A, which is believed to be one of the first three built, the third one sold, and the oldest surviving Ford production car. The original owner was Herbert L. McNary, who worked for a creamery in Britt, Iowa. He paid $850 for the car, which he and his family kept for over a half-century.
McNary may never have known it, but his $170 deposit on the car—in addition to a $300 deposit from the Indiana Motor Co. for another Model A and an $850 full-price payment from a Dr. E. Pfennig for his car—kept the fledgling Ford Motor Co. from teetering over the edge of insolvency. (Neither the Indiana car nor Dr. Pfennig’s are believed to still exist.)
When the three orders arrived on July 13, 1903, Henry Ford’s company—his third and ultimately successful foray into the automobile business—had a corporate bank balance of exactly $223.65, not enough to meet the impending payroll. The $1320 was just enough to keep Ford in business. Over the next 15 months, 1700 Model A Fords were assembled in the little plant on Detroit’s Mack Avenue, and the rest is history.
McNary’s family finally sold the Model A to an Iowa collector, Harry Burd, for $400. Burd had the car restored, later selling it to a Swiss Ford dealer in 1961. The car was displayed at Ford of Europe’s Cologne, Germany, headquarters until 2001, and appeared in Ford centenary celebration events in England, as well as making the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which is restricted to cars built before 1905.
Before going on the auction block, this Model A Rear-Entry Tonneau (also known as a runabout) was most recently part of the collection of the late John O’Quinn. Although previously restored, including a complete rebuild of the 100-cubic-inch, eight-horsepower two-cylinder engine, the Model A received a mild update restoration following the auction by Terry Deters Restorations in Temperance, Michigan. The transmission is a two-speed unit.

The Model A was the headliner at a kickoff event today at Ford’s World Headquarters in Dearborn that begins the celebration of Henry Ford’s 150th birthday. It will also be on display at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the public days for which are January 19–27.
Beyond that, Chairman Ford says he fully intends to learn how to drive his expensive family heirloom.

First Images of 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-class Leak Ahead of Debut

2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 wagon
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-class’s element of surprise finally has been completely blown. After the E-class was caught completely undisguised in Spain, Mercedes itself posted teaser photos of the E’s new headlight design and let us  take a spin in the 2014 E63 AMG sedan. Now, images of the refreshed E-class have spilt onto the internet. Differences between the new luxury sedan and the outgoing car aren’t huge—the current car’s odd Ponton rear fender crease and dual headlight pods are gone in favor of smooth flanks and single-pod headlight units stuffed with LED accents. But altogether the changes furnish a more attractive, sleeker-looking E-class that eschews the outgoing car’s somewhat disjointed appearance. We’ll have full details on the new Benz later this week, so be sure to check back here for your weekly fix of German product news.

Original Acura NSX Buyer’s Guide: A Mid-Engined Supercar for the Price of a New Accord

2002 Acura NSX
From the December 2012 issue of CAR and DRIVER magazine
Supercars are expensive; buying used is the schlub’s way to get previously unattainable stuff at a reasonable price. Take, for example, the Acura NSX. Prices when new ranged from $60,000 in 1991 to just shy of  $90,000 by the time production stopped in 2005. Now, though, this mid-engined exotic—with the reliability, comfort, and everyday drivability of, well, a Honda—is considerably cheaper. You can pick up a good one for the cost of a new Accord. But be wary—and by all means, get a pre-purchase inspection—because, while it’s no Lamborghini or Ferrari, parts and repairs for an NSX can be expensive.

alloy everywhere
The thing that most distinguished the NSX from its peers was its extensive use of aluminum, which formed the unibody, engine, transaxle housing, suspension, wheels, and even the seat frames. Aluminum body panels were toughened by heat treating, and became thinner in later models. Watch for panel misalignment, waviness, mismatching colors and textures, overspray, and uneven caulk surrounding new glass. Inspect the hood and deck areas carefully.1991 Acura NSX

engine
Still cutting-edge today, the NSX’s aluminum-block V-6 boasts variable-valve timing, titanium connecting rods, and an 8000-rpm redline. Unless sadistically abused or poorly maintained, they’re basically bulletproof. The timing belt and water pump need to be replaced every 90,000 miles or so.
suspension
Early cars chewed through their rear tires in a hurry. Acura’s solution was to change the alignment specifications, something that’s easy for owners to remedy.

transaxle
Early cars had a five-speed manual; Acura made the switch to a six-speed in 1997. In ’91 and ’92 cars (with transmission numbers ending in 3542 through 5978), make sure the shifter doesn’t move excessively in response to engine load. If an internal groove was cut too wide, a critical snap ring can resonate and break. If it’s going to happen, it happens early, so higher-mileage cars are probably okay. Repairs run $3000 to $4000.

Lamborghini’s Gallardo Charges Into The Sunset: Video

The 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo – image: Lamborghini
We’ve known that a successor for Lamborghini’s Gallardo supercar has been in development for some time, so this news should come as no real surprise: the Italian automaker has announced that 2013 will be the final year for the Gallardo. In tribute, it’s produced a short video showing off the revised front and rear styling of the car decked out in the newly-available Style Package.
Introduced for the 2004 model year, the Gallardo has become the mainstay of Lamborghini’s product line. It’s available in varieties to suit almost anyone, including Coupe or open-air Spyder, in all-wheel-drive or a few rear-drive configurations. It’s taught hundreds of drivers the joys of power-on oversteer, and the music made by its 5.2-liter V-10 has made countless men more attractive to the opposite sex.
Expect the yet-unnamed successor to the Gallardo to debut sometime next year, while Lamborghini sends off its gateway-to-the-brand car with the previously-referenced Style Package and an Edizion Technica for the 2013 model year. While Lamborghini isn’t saying much about its upcoming Gallardo replacement, we know it will use a platform under development by fellow Volkswagen Group brand Porsche, and we think its a safe bet that the next car will carry on with a normally-aspirated V-10, too.
If you want more details, Lamborghini has even set up a dedicated “Final Gallardo” webpage for those interested in parking this particular raging bull in their own corral.
