4 killed after Florida police chase ends with deadly crash

Four innocent people died Wednesday morning on I-95, south of Fort Lauderdale, after a high-speed police chase ended on the wrong side of the road, WSVN.com reported.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened early Wednesday. They say police were pursuing a sport utility vehicle when it headed northbound in the interstate’s southbound lanes and collided with a minivan, the Miami Herald reported.

Authorities say the driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital with two broken legs. Opa-locka police spokesman David Chiverton says officers had stopped pursuing the SUV before it got onto I-95.

“Let me just say that I’ve been doing this for about 25 years and this is one of the worst accidents that I’ve seen,” said an officer, reported WSVN.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office says all southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down while an investigation continued. None of the victims’ names have been released.

Florida school bus driver says she was suspended for answering call from Marine son

A Florida school bus driver was suspended for five days after surveillance video caught her answering her cell phone while she was behind the wheel, WSVN.com reported.

Rossana Lucas said there was a reason she answered the call: she had not heard from her son for seven months. He is a Marine stationed in Afghanistan and he was calling to wish her happy birthday.

“He said ‘Mom, I am OK, I love you, Happy Birthday,'” Lucas told the station. “Because my birthday was December 10, and I said, ‘Thank you, I love you and you take care’ and that is it.”

Her translator told the Boward County School Board Monday that when she answered the call, she was two blocks from the parking lot and there were no children on board.

“If I don’t answer in that time he will have no chance to call me back again,” Lucas said. “He has to wait three or four months again to call me back.”

Tracy Clark, the spokeswoman from the Boward County School District, said the board agreed to review the matter and meet again in April. Clark said it is against school board policy to use a cell phone on while operating a bus.

Lucas, for her part, says she was unable to get permission from a dispatcher because her phone was already ringing.

WSVN reported that Lucas seems to have dialed up some support from Superintendent Robert Runcie.

“We have these rules, context does matter and there is some definite circumstances here that I think weren’t taking another look at this,” Runcie said.

Florida man hires plane to fly banner around hospital to thank doctors

A Florida man who was injured in a horsebackriding accident gave his doctors a huge shout out renting a plane to spell out his gratitude.

After being released from the hospital, Don Donaguer paid for a small plane to fly above Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., with a banner that read, “Dr. Daniel Chan is the man! Thanks Memorial Staff, Don.”

According to a report from WSVN, Donaguer and his wife, Lydia, had been on a Valentine’s Day vacation in the Cayman Islands when he fell off a horse and hit the ground pretty hard.

He told WSVN the accident put a damper on the day’s plans. “It’s my bid day of the year, and the wife said, ‘No rain check.’ …You kno what i’m talking about,” he said.

Donaguer suffered from a concussion and significant pelvic fracture, which would require for him to get surgery. He was taken to Memorial Regional where he was treated by Dr. Daniel Chan who is an orthopedic trauma surgeon.

Chan said Donaguer was in stable condition when he arrived, but it was clear he needed surgery to realign his pelvis and so he would be able to walk again.

Donaguer got the idea of the banner right as he woke up from the operation. He said he “woke up, [and] was like, ‘Dr. Chan is the man!'”

Chan told WSVN he was “quite shocked” when Donaguer let him know about his plans.

For his part, Donaguer said he was just “happy to be alive [because] in this position where you just don’t know.”
