KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self predicted this week that a No. 1 seed would someday lose to a No. 16.
He didn’t know his Jayhawks would be trying to fend off being the first.
The South Region’s top seed needed 17 points from Jeff Withey, and a series of foul shots from Ben McLemore and Naadir Tharpe down the stretch, to hold off scrappy Western Kentucky 64-57 Friday night and avoid another upset on a day full of them in the NCAA tournament.

No. 8 seed North Carolina will face No. 9 Villanova in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in the South region.
After hitting a couple rough patches in conference play, the Tar Heels got on track winning eight of their last ten games. Villanova on the other hand, has lost three of its last five.
The winner in this matchup in Kansas City on March 22 will face the winner of No. 1 Kansas and No. 16 Western Kentucky in the third round.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Elijah Johnson is the first to admit there have been far more talented teams to play at Kansas, even in the four years he’s been part of the program.
Turns out it was still talented enough to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Big 12 champions received a spot on the top line for the fifth time in seven years on Sunday, and will open play in the South Region against Sun Belt champion Western Kentucky at the Sprint Center in nearby Kansas City, Mo.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — George Fant helped Western Kentucky book its return trip to the NCAA tournament.
Fant had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Western Kentucky earned its second straight NCAA tournament berth with a 65-63 win over Florida International in the Sun Belt Conference championship game Monday night.
The fifth-seeded Hilltoppers (20-15) used the same script as last season, winning four games in four days to secure their fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons. They capped the run by never trailing in the second half and holding on against the resurgent Panthers.
Bobby Petrino is close to an agreement to become the next head coach at Western Kentucky, a source close to the coach told ESPN’s Joe Schad on Monday.
