On December 13, 2012, Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti determined that a three game suspension without pay and a $50,000 fine were appropriate sanctions for former Rutgers head men’s basketball coach, Mike Rice. The sanctions came after Pernetti reportedly viewed video footage of team practices Rice held in which Rice purposefully chucked basketballs at players, kicked one player and shouted homophobic slurs at others. Details of why Rice was sanctioned by the athletics department in December was largely pushed under the rug, as the general public was not privy to the video footage Pernetti viewed. The blinders were removed from the public’s eyes earlier this week, though, when ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” aired footage of Rutgers’ men’s basketball practices. On April 5, 2013 the public’s outcry over Rice’s behavior and Pernetti’s sanctions in their wake was loud enough to cost Pernetti his job. …read more
