Renault Partners with AVG Technologies to Secure its New Automotive App Store

– Web-scanning architecture ensures protection for all apps in the Renault R-Link store –

AMSTERDAM & SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Leading car manufacturer Renault has chosen AVG Technologies N.V. (NYS: AVG) to add an extra layer of security to its ground-breaking new embedded and connected navigation and multimedia platform, Renault R-Link. AVG already provides internet and mobile security to more than 146 million active users worldwide, and it has now deployed its web-scanning architecture to enable all apps in the Renault R-Link store to be protected from all known malware.

Developed in collaboration with leading sat-nav experts, Renault R-Link combines an affordable, touchscreen multimedia device with a curated online app store. At launch, there will be over 50 apps to choose from, spanning travel, entertainment, news and social media, with plans to add many more in the future. The system is available today on the new Renault Clio and will be rolled out to other models in the range during 2013, including the eagerly-anticipated all-electric ZOE model, the Kangoo Express and the Captur.

To create peace of mind, the AVG logo is displayed on the Renault R-Link store alongside the phrase “Protected by AVG.” All security scanning is done online, before users download apps to their R-Link device.

John Giamatteo, COO of AVG Technologies, explains: “AVG provides total peace-of-mind to millions of people in their daily digital lives. As the ‘connected car’ becomes a reality, it is vital that drivers and passengers can enjoy the same freedom from worry with their in-car devices. This partnership with Renault is a natural and logical step for us, and we look forward to working together as R-Link builds momentum as a platform.”

Jean-Fran├žois Martin, Director of Renault Service International, said,“Renault R-Link allows Renault drivers and their passengers to enjoy seamless multimedia connectivity and entertainment in a safe environment. As a download-enabled device designed for automotive use, it is imperative that we deliver absolute safety and security. That’s why we chose to partner with AVG Technologies, which has a long history of delivering innovative and successful security solutions.”

Volkswagen Golf wins 2013 World Car of the Year

The second day of the New York Auto Show festivities have just kicked with the annual World Car of the Year awards, and we’ve just learned that the top honors for 2013 go to the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf. The win marks the second in a row for Volkswagen, which also collected the hardware in 2012 for its Up! supermini.

The World Car awards are handed out by a panelist of 66 auto journalists from around the world, including Autoblog European Editor, Matt Davis. Runners-up for the big award included the Audi A3, Land Rover Range Rover, Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Peugeot 208, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 and Volvo V40.

Also announced this morning is the winner of the 2013 World Performance Car award. In this category, the Porsche Boxster and Cayman has been picked by the jury over a number of other contenders, including the Aston Martin Vanquish, Audi RS5, BMW M6, BMW M135i, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, Renault Clio Sport and the Toyobaru triplets.

Moving to more eco-friendly matters, the World Green Car award has been handed to the – surprise, surprise – Tesla Model S. The all-electric sedan topped the Renault Zoe, Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid Diesel.

Lastly, the annual World Car Design laurels have been awarded to the impossibly pretty Jaguar F-Type, besting other attractive finalists including the Aston Martin Vanquish, Renault Clio, Land Rover Range Rover, Mazda6 and Volkswagen Golf.

Have a look at all the World Car winners in our galleries below.

Official: Renault brings Captur from concept to reality with new CUV

Renault Captur

Renault has officially brought the Captur Concept to life with a new small crossover. The production version has abandoned the wild scissor doors and bulbous fenders of the concept in favor of a more mature five-door configuration.

Based on the Renault Clio, the Captur offers buyers a range of gasoline and diesel engines. While the automaker hasn’t served up any drivetrain specifics, we’d be surprised if the Captur option sheet didn’t come littered with the same powerplants as its cousin, including a turbocharged .9-liter three-cylinder and a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine as well as a 1.5-liter diesel. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission handles shifting duties in all applications.

The Captur will be built at the Renault facility in Valladolid, Spain. Expect to see the machine receive an official unveil at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March. Until then, you can take a closer look at the full press release below, and be sure to click through the complete gallery here as well.

Official: European Car of the Year finalists announced

By Chris Tutor

Electric cars may have won the European Car of the Year award two years in a row now (Opel Ampera in 2012, and Nissan Leaf in 2011), we can say without reservation that the 2013 ECotY will be a petrol-burning, internal combustionizer. That’s because not a single electric vehicle made it to the contest’s final round. But eight other cars did.

At the top of the alphabetical list is Ford’s Fiesta-based, B-Max MPV. Five doors, good ride and fuel-efficient, award-winning engine choices are some of the reasons it makes the list. Next is the Hyundai i30, known as the Elantra GT Stateside, with either five or three doors, a roomy cabin and a 1.6-liter CRDi engine. The nominating committee commends the handsome hatch for improved exterior aesthetics and a multilink suspension that “shows in ride and handling.”

Mercedes gets the next spot with its hot hatch: the turbocharged A-Class, followed by another hatch, the Peugeot 208. The next finalist is from another marque we haven’t seen in the States for quite some time – the fourth-generation Renault Clio, followed by the Subaru/Toyota dynamic duo of BRZ and the GT86. The last two contenders are the all-new Volkswagen Golf and the svelte Volvo V40.

The European Car of the Year will be announced in early March after the jury has tallied its votes.
