By Darryl

The upcoming 2015 Acura NSX is a long-awaited exotic vehicle that many enthusiasts are curious about in a mystical way. The mystical aspect of the new NSX is its supposed revolutionary drivetrain and something exciting out of Honda/Acura after a long hiatus. Acura has released an extremely short 7-second clip of the new Acura NSX giving us a glimpse of it in action and a couple small sound bites. Of course this video is just leaving us wanting more but we will have to wait… a while.

Also, check out the Acura NSX Prototype in the rain on the track.

Video: Acura teases 17 seconds of the NSX on Vine and Instagram

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Acura won’t roll out the prototype NSX until August 4 when it shows up at Mid-Ohio Raceway for the Honda 200 IndyCar race, and the genuine production car isn’t scheduled to arrive until 2015. Acura will, though, make the car a Vine and Instagram video star with snippets of the mid-engined roarer lapping the test track in both the dry and the wet.

After unleashing a six-second loop on Twitter’s video service yesterday, it gave fans a bit more by uploading a nine-second clip on Instagram of the coupe throwing up rooster tails and sliding around bends. Best of all is the sound – it’s like no Acura you’ve ever heard outside of a race track. You can check out both videos below.

Video: Honda takes us through 50 years of automobiles in 60 seconds

By Brandon Turkus

Filed under:

Honda’s wonderfully simple, fun ads are not in short supply right now. We showed you Hands, the followup to 2003’s The Cog, last week. If you haven’t had a chance to look at those two great videos, we strongly encourage you to head over that way and give them a watch.

The latest minute-long commercial is a bit more dear, though. And while it may be in Japanese, it’s still a cool look back at Honda and its car-building history.

This is also a great video if you’re a fan of odd, vintage Japanese vehicles. Honda’s T360 and a few old Civics are featured heavily, although we can’t help but notice that a few very big names are missing. Where’s the NSX or the S2000? How about the original Insight, a car so revolutionary it still has a cult following today? Honda has made some great cars, we just wish it’d show off more of them. Check out the video below.

Official: Honda signs on as Pikes Peak sponsor, race participant

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Honda plans to storm the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 30, entering ten cars in nine classes at the race to the sky, and signing on as a corporate sponsor. Part of the company’s return to grassroots racing – if that’s what you can call factory-backed efforts – the banners of Honda R&D and Honda North America will fly on these entries: a first-gen Acura NSX, an Acura TL SH-AWD, Honda CR-Z, Honda Fit EV, one CRF450R and two CRF250R motorcycles, a CBR1000RR motorcycle and a TRX450 ATV.

One more entry, details of which are to be announced later, will be driven by IndyCar pilot Simon Pagenaud of Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports. LoveFab (pictured above during practice last year) will be there with its new, NSX-based Enviate, but as a privateer entry.

Honda’s been to the mountain before, with high-powered gear in 2012 and record-setting EVs in 1994 and 1999, but it’s never made noise like this. Have a read of the press release below for more info.

Motorsports: LoveFab headed back to Pikes Peak with NSX-based heathen [w/video]

By Zach Bowman

LoveFab Enviate Acura NSX

Filed under:

LoveFab had a rough run at Pikes Peak 2012. During qualifying on Day Two, owner and professional driver Cody Loveland launched his car off of the course at nearly 60 miles per hour. Never ones to be dismayed by a few bruised ribs and some busted body panels, LoveFab is headed back to the hill climb for 2013, and this year, it’s bringing Garrett along as a title sponsor.

Loveland’s chariot of choice is officially dubbed “Turbo by Garrett/LoveFab Pikes Peak Enviate” and is loosely based on an Acura NSX. All of the stock Japanese components have been swapped for LoveFab-built pieces with the exception of the subframes and suspension.

With a dry-sump LS1 V8, chromoly-tube chassis and a full carbon fiber body, the car is about as wild as they come. With around 800 pound-feet of torque on hand and a curb weight of under 2,000 pounds, the machine should give the mountain a run for its money. The team is expected to begin testing Enviate beginning May 1. You can check out a quick interview with Loveland in the video below along with the full press release.

Acura Shows Off Updated NSX Concept—Now with Interior! [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

Acura NSX concept

If you’re beginning to think Acura’s near-constant parading of its NSX concept is becoming a bit tired, we won’t argue. We’re incredibly excited for the car, but the automaker has shown the NSX in essentially the same form in Detroit, Beijing (where it was painted red!), and Geneva (with Honda badges). We’ve also stumbled across patent images of the topless NSX roadster that Acura may produce. So, naturally, it showed up at the 2013 Detroit auto show. But the news is more than just a paint job or a grille this time, as the NSX is moving closer to reality: It now rides on a version of the production car’s architecture and has an interior.

Acura NSX concept

This is the first time Acura has previewed the NSX’s interior; every previous iteration of the concept car was a (presumably hollow) show car or styling buck. The cabin looks much closer to production spec than the “concept car” designation might lead you to believe, and it boasts a handsome design clearly executed with great restraint.

Whether it appears businesslike or stark is up to you; we happen to think it’s just a few pieces of brightwork away from ideal. The air vents seem scooped and the central display chiseled from the sweeping dash. The red leather and suede-look seats contrast nicely with the dashboard’s dark suede-look wrap and numerous swaths of carbon fiber. The seats themselves have a curiously futuristic style about them, but if those bolsters are as form-hugging and supportive as they look, there will be no complaints from us.

Acura NSX concept

The chunky steering wheel is aggressively contoured and features a flat bottom and a handsome three-spoke design. Behind the wheel lives a digital gauge cluster flanked by analog fuel and coolant-temperature gauges. Shifting duties for the NSX’s dual-clutch automatic transmission are handled by a set of steering-wheel-mounted paddles and an array of push buttons on the center console.

Normally, one has to wait until a concept reaches production to say for sure whether its interior and exterior styling survive, but we’re thinking the 2015 Acura NSX is going to be essentially what you see here. And we’re okay with that.

Updated Acura NSX Concept Graces Detroit Adding to Extended Anticipations

By Darryl

The Acura NSX Concept is undoubtedly a highly anticipated vehicle to inject a bit of true sports and exotic aptitude into the Acura and Honda brand. Being that the Acura NSX is still years off until it drops at your local dealership, engineers and designers have plenty of time make changes improvements to it. With that said, Acura brings the latest iteration of the NSX Concept to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit today.

What we get to see for the first time in the Acura NSX Concept is an interior. Aside from the surprising interior, a few minor changes have been made including the wheels selection. The Acura NSX Concept still carries its sexy looks and only adds to our eager anticipation. I am not sure if we can all wait two or so more years before this baby is officially released.

Hit up the updated press release from Acura on their latest NSX ‘Hybrid’ Concept and be sure to view the new interior shots.

Acura Unveils Next Evolution of NSX Concept at 2013 North American International Auto Show
Acura provides first look at possible NSX interior design concept

01/15/2013 – DETROIT, Mich

Acura today unveiled a new NSX Concept that showcases the evolution of the next-generation supercar’s styling and design, including a first-ever look at one possible direction for the next-generation NSX interior design.

“This further evolution of the Acura NSX Concept design is remarkably true to the original concept styling,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations. “We’re making great progress in delivering on the expectations we created a year ago, with advanced technology that will bring new levels of performance and a unique, dynamic experience to the exotic sports car market.”

The new Acura NSX Concept is based on the expected underpinnings of the vehicle Acura will bring to market. Still, the new NSX Concept maintains its low and wide stance with the dynamic and alluring proportions that debuted in the original NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show — highlighted by clean, modern and simple surfacing, and edgy details that communicate supercar attitude and a high-tech feel.

The new NSX Concept also features a first-ever look at one potential direction for the next-generation Acura NSX interior design. The design concept is founded on a “Human Support Cockpit” theme, a strong expression of Acura’s product direction focused on “the synergy between man and machine.” The interior package boasts outstanding visibility, an exotic driving position, and an intuitive “Simple Sports Interface” that minimizes interior clutter, allowing the driver to focus on the driving experience.

“Consistent with the spirit of the original NSX, our intention is to support the psychological and emotional aspects of driving a super car at the limit, because we are insistent about delivering on the synergy between man and machine,” said Jon Ikeda, chief designer, Acura Design Studio. “Importantly, this will be true of all Acura vehicles moving forward.”

With the aim of delivering a new sports car experience that combines next-generation supercar dynamic capabilities with advanced environmental performance, Acura announced a year ago that the Acura NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V-6 engine mated to Acura’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system.

Acura Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is an all-new, three-motor high-performance hybrid system that combines torque vectoring all-wheel drive with advanced hybrid efficiency through the use of three electric motors – one motor integrated with the V-6 engine and two motors driving the front wheels – along with an all-new dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The system enables instant delivery of negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering to achieve a new level of driving performance unparalleled by current AWD systems.

As previously announced, the new NSX is being developed by a global R&D team led by designers and engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. located in Los Angeles, California, and Raymond, Ohio. The new NSX will also be manufactured at a new production facility in central Ohio.

Detroit: Acura NSX Concept is pretty on the inside, too

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Acura NSX Concept

The Acura NSX is still a couple years away from production (isn’t it always?), but Acura has taken the dark window tint off last year’s concept and opened the doors to show us what the interior of the car looks like. From what we can tell on the show-floor display, Acura’s hybrid supercar will not only have a sexy exterior design, it will look great from the inside as well, but Acura pointed out that this is just “one possible direction” the interior could go. We suppose that means we can look forward to many more NSX concepts – you won’t hear any complaints from us.

Building on Acura’s latest tagline of “the synergy between man and machine,” the NSX promises to provide a “human connected space” offering a simplified layout presumably chocked full of technology. Looking inside the concept reveals a cabin wrapped in maroon leather with sport bucket seats that will certainly provide plenty of support. We’re sure there will be more information about the car and its interior at upcoming auto shows, but until then, scroll down for Acura’s press release.

Original Acura NSX Buyer’s Guide: A Mid-Engined Supercar for the Price of a New Accord

2002 Acura NSX
From the December 2012 issue of CAR and DRIVER magazine
Supercars are expensive; buying used is the schlub’s way to get previously unattainable stuff at a reasonable price. Take, for example, the Acura NSX. Prices when new ranged from $60,000 in 1991 to just shy of  $90,000 by the time production stopped in 2005. Now, though, this mid-engined exotic—with the reliability, comfort, and everyday drivability of, well, a Honda—is considerably cheaper. You can pick up a good one for the cost of a new Accord. But be wary—and by all means, get a pre-purchase inspection—because, while it’s no Lamborghini or Ferrari, parts and repairs for an NSX can be expensive.

alloy everywhere
The thing that most distinguished the NSX from its peers was its extensive use of aluminum, which formed the unibody, engine, transaxle housing, suspension, wheels, and even the seat frames. Aluminum body panels were toughened by heat treating, and became thinner in later models. Watch for panel misalignment, waviness, mismatching colors and textures, overspray, and uneven caulk surrounding new glass. Inspect the hood and deck areas carefully.1991 Acura NSX

engine
Still cutting-edge today, the NSX’s aluminum-block V-6 boasts variable-valve timing, titanium connecting rods, and an 8000-rpm redline. Unless sadistically abused or poorly maintained, they’re basically bulletproof. The timing belt and water pump need to be replaced every 90,000 miles or so.
suspension
Early cars chewed through their rear tires in a hurry. Acura’s solution was to change the alignment specifications, something that’s easy for owners to remedy.

transaxle
Early cars had a five-speed manual; Acura made the switch to a six-speed in 1997. In ’91 and ’92 cars (with transmission numbers ending in 3542 through 5978), make sure the shifter doesn’t move excessively in response to engine load. If an internal groove was cut too wide, a critical snap ring can resonate and break. If it’s going to happen, it happens early, so higher-mileage cars are probably okay. Repairs run $3000 to $4000.
