First lady praises midshipmen at US Naval Academy

First lady Michelle Obama is praising midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy for their service.

Obama told about 4,000 midshipmen Wednesday at the academy in Annapolis, Md., that she and President Barack Obama were working hard for them, just as they do for the country.

The first lady is scheduled to join Gov. Martin O’Malley as he signs the Veterans Full Employment Act of 2013 into law. The bill is designed to expedite the licensing procedure for veterans and military spouses who hold professional licenses in other states.

In February, the nation’s governors were urged by the first lady to pass legislation that streamlines the process for service members and veterans to earn civilian credentials and licenses.

White House officials say 13 states have already complied.

The Navy Midshipmen were at the White House today, marking eight visits in ten years that the U.S. Naval Academy's football team has won the Commander-in-Chief Trophy against the other service academies. Last year, Vice President Biden was there to award the Trophy when the Midshipmen triumphed in the 113th annual Army-Navy game to win the title.

In his remarks, President Obama highlighted the team's excellent record, but he talked more about their ethic of teamwork and discipline and unselfishness, and praised their focus on academics — the Naval Academy’s graduation rate has been in the top 10 of the NCAA for the eighth straight year. But most of all, the President paid tribute to the work these champions will be doing in the future, on behalf of this country:

THE PRESIDENT: Hello, everybody. (Applause.) Hello. Please, everybody have a seat. Well, good afternoon. Welcome to the White House.

I want to start by recognizing Coach Ken Niumatalolo, my fellow Hawaiian, for being here once again — where is he? There he is right here. (Laughter.) Hard to miss him. Give him a big round of applause. (Applause.) I also want to recognize Vice Admiral Mike Miller, the Superintendent of the Naval Academy, for his outstanding service to our country and for keeping all of you guys in line. (Laughter and applause.)

It is my pleasure to welcome the Navy Midshipmen back to the White House to receive the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy — again. They have now won 19 of their last 21 games against the other service academies, making this their 8th trip here in 10 years. (Applause.) Michelle and I were thinking about just leaving the key under the rug. (Laughter.)

This season, you finished 8-5, earned your 9th bowl appearance in the last 10 years. But perhaps most importantly, after a two-year break, you achieved that very first goal you set at the start of every season: You beat Air Force, you beat Army, and lugged this 170-pound trophy back to Annapolis.

Against Air Force, you lost your quarterback to an injury in the middle of the game. You trailed by eight points in the fourth quarter. But freshman quarterback Keenan Reynolds took over and led you back in overtime. That’s when an unlikely hero — offensive lineman Jake Zuzek — gave you a —

TEAM MEMBERS: Zu!

THE PRESIDENT: Zu! — gave you a 28-21 win when he recovered a fumbled snap in the end zone for his first-ever touchdown. (Laughter.) I’m not sure Coach called the fumblerooski, but I bet that Jake will take it anyway.

That set up a winner-take-all game with Army to end the season. Down three entering the fourth quarter, Keenan again led the comeback, driving the team down the field for 80 yards and the winning score, and showing why he was only the third Navy freshman ever to start at quarterback. The win gave the Midshipmen their 11th straight victory over Army, which is a series record.

But at Navy, obviously it’s not just about the wins. It’s about how you win. This year, your team motto was INAM, which is short for “It’s Not About Me.” And that ethic of teamwork and discipline and unselfishness was led by your captains, Bo Snelson and Brye French, and it ran through your entire season.

All season long you kept your priorities in line, your mission in focus. Your work in the classroom helped keep the Naval Academy’s graduation rate in the top 10 of the NCAA for the eighth straight year, including linebacker Keegan

Kyle Miller Joins Whitestone REIT as Vice President of Operations

HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Whitestone REIT (NYSE: WSR ) (“Whitestone” or the “Company”), a real estate investment trust that acquires, owns and operates Community Centered PropertiesTM, today announced the addition of Kyle A. Miller as Vice President of Operations. Miller was previously the Senior Vice President, Development & Investment, for Trammell Crow Company, a national real estate and investment company wholly owned by CB Richard Ellis. Naval Academy graduate found murdered in San Diego apartment

Investigators say they have charged a 21-year-old with murder in the death of his brother, a 25-year-old Naval officer who was found dead in his San Diego apartment Sunday.

Jonathon Tenorio was found by his roommate possibly stabbed and covered in blood, Fox 5 reports. The cause of his death has not yet been determined, but authorities ruled it a homicide.

Investigators told NBC San Diego Tenorio’s 21-year-old brother Zach was arrestedand charged with murder in the case. They declined to provide further details.

Tenorio recently graduated from the Naval Academy and was serving as a designated surface warfare officer on the USS Bunker Hill.

He had recently married Christine Santos, a student at San Diego‘s Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Santos’ father is a prominent senator in Guam, where Tenorio was from, Fox 5 reports.

“It’s really sad,” neighbor Dr. Marivic Cruz told Fox 5. “I’ve never heard of anything like this before.

The Navy says it is deeply saddened by the loss of Tenorio and that it is cooperating with homicide investigators.
