Then the toilet will screw down a bit more securely and should be stable and not rock. It will be a bit tricky with the heavy tile flooring.
Any suggestions could help! thx

Wanted: Apply for this Junior Job!

Aaron implemented in plasma master (now kdeplasma-addons in in git) the functionality to use the Apply button in the C++ applets config dialogs: when you change a setting, Apply makes the setting visible without closing the configuration dialog.
So the changes were made in some plasma files and now all the C++ applets have to be ported. It’s really a very easy job and I did it with the Picture Frame applet (so I could test my git skills and do my first push): you only need to connect all UI widgets in the configuration dialog to the slot SLOT(settingsModified())
Read the mail from Aaron

Folderview also is already ported.

If you need help, we’ll be happy to provide it on IRC in #plasma or using the plasma-devel mailing list.
You can either send me the patches or push yourself if you have an account.

Please remember to add the applet you are working on and your name on

Thanks a lot!

PS: my first problem with git was because my distro version (1.6.4.4) was too old to support separate urls so be sure to have a recent enough git version in order to be able to push. Again thanks to the 24/24 admin support (a Saturday morning!) the problem was quickly spotted! I built git from git and it’s all OK now.

I should note that it requires master (as kdelibs and kdebase and kdeplasma-addons are on git). Master is the new term for “trunk”. …read more

Remember When Even IBM Couldn't Compete With Microsoft?

By Alex Planes, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

On this day in economic and financial history…

The PC wars were largely over by 1987. IBM — or, more precisely, IBM-compatible machines — and Microsoft had won, thanks to standardization, clones, and MS-DOS. But neither company was content to rest on its laurels. Time recounts the day that IBM tried to break free of DOS:

It was one of the most ambitious computer-product announcements in history. On April 2, 1987, at twin press conferences in New York and Miami, IBM unveiled its plans to reinvent the PC industry, which it had jump-started less than six years earlier with the introduction of the first IBM PC. The company introduced four new computers dubbed the PS/2 line, including an $11,000 model that it said was seven times faster than current models. The new products were rife with advanced features, including 32-bit processors, fancy graphics, 3.5-in. hard-shell floppy-disk drives and optical storage.

And the new hardware was accompanied by a next-generation operating system, OS/2. Co-developed by IBM and Microsoft, it was intended to replace DOS, the aging software that then powered most of the planet’s microcomputers.

Of course, this didn’t actually happen. OS/2 became one of IBM‘s biggest computing failures. It was an ambitious new operating system that promised to avoid DOS‘ shortcomings by not building atop it, as had Microsoft’s Windows (released a year earlier). But the April announcement gave way to waiting for an incomplete operating system to finally flesh itself out. The first version, 1.0, was DOS-like and had no graphical interface. The first graphical OS/2 didn’t arrive until the fall of 1988. A year after that, fewer than 200,000 copies had sold — OS/2 was simply too much of a system hog to run well on most of the day’s machines.

Microsoft, meanwhile, continued to develop Windows on its own. Version 3.0 came out in 1990, and by then it was beginning to catch on, giving Microsoft all the rationale it needed to cut off its co-development work on OS/2. By the time IBM pushed OS/2 2.0 out the door in 1992, Microsoft’s operating-system lead on PCs was virtually insurmountable. Although version 2.0 sold nearly two million copies, it wasn’t enough to blunt the growth of Windows, and IBM‘s operating system remained a single-digit player in a market it had essentially created years earlier.

By the time Windows 95 came out, OS/2 was a sloppy, poorly built mess of a graphical operating system — it earned the lowest score of the four major operating systems available in a PC World test just after Windows 95 hit the market. OS/2 simply wasn’t built for the average user, and without the support of the average user, no consumer operating system can succeed.

The divergence of Windows and OS/2 is reflected in the share prices of the two longtime collaborators. In the decade following OS/2’s first announcement, Microsoft gained 3,400%, but IBM‘s share price …read more

Help with NMAP

By renoir611

I’m seeing a persistent address showing up on my firewall router logs. The address is 10.98.115.9:67, and is broadcasting to 255.255.255.255. I know that this would typically signal a BOOTP service, such as a bootp server announcing itself on the network. But I can’t isolate which machine it is. I have only one machine running, then turn off the standalone wireless router and the switch, but it continues to show up. I ran nmap against it, and it automatically included another, completely different, IP in the scan. It’s got me baffled. Here’s the output:

New York school principal's movie role as gangsta angers parents

The principal of a Bronx elementary school moonlights as an actress, starring in a bloody B-movie as a vicious gangbanger who deals drugs, robs, rapes and murders.

Anissa Chalmers, principal of PS 132 in Morrisania, plays a gangsta who shoots an innocent woman in an initiation rite, rapes and kills a man for revenge, and slaughters three others in the un-rated “Gang Girl.”

In real life, Chalmers, 40, is under investigation by the city Department of Education for an undisclosed allegation, an agency spokeswoman said.

Over 112 days in the current academic year, her school has seen 172 reported student “incidents,” including 111 offenses such as smoking, cursing and misusing property. PS 132 has been the scene of several recent violent altercations among kids, and two secretaries were charged with theft.

Gang Girl” was released in 2009, about three years after Chalmers was named principal of PS 132, where she makes $129,920 a year.

New York City teacher's aide pleads guilty to filming child porn at school

A teachers’ aide in a Brooklyn elementary school faces up to 50 years in jail after pleading guilty to filming child pornography in the classroom where he worked.

Taleek Brooks, 42, pleaded guilty Friday to charges of producing and distributing the illegal materials before a judge at a federal court in the New York City borough.

Brooks, who works as an aide at Public School 243, was accused of having “regularly downloaded and distributed videos and images depicting child pornography over the Internet through a peer-to-peer file sharing program,” the FBI said.

In December 2001, Brooks accepted a friend request on the peer-to-peer network. That person was an undercover agent who was able to access and download graphic videos and images.

The next month, agents moved on Brooks’ home with a warrant and confiscated a computer and two external hard drives. During their investigation of the equipment, agents found hundreds of video and images depicting child pornography.

A forensic look at the equipment uncovered a folder labeled “special,” where they found a video in which Brooks can be heard giving directions to a young child to perform explicit sexual acts.

Investigators later confirmed that the child was a student and PS 243 and that the video was made on school grounds, the statement said.

Brooks will be sentenced in May.

Multiple command execution inside awk command during xml parsing

By vivek d r

below is the output xml string from some other command and i will be parsing it using awk

Code:

cat /tmp/alerts.xml

.
.
.
etc ect

which i will be parsing using below command

Code:

awk -F'[=|"||,]' '{for(i=1;i<=NF;i++){
if($i=="Alert id") {
if(id!="")
if(dt!=""){ printf "ID=%dnNAME=%snFIXED=%snDATE=%snAlDefID=%dnn", id,nm,fx,dt,alDFid; }
id=($i=="Alert id")?$(i+2):id; }
nm=($i==" name")?$(i+2):nm;
fx=($i==" fixed")?$(i+2):fx;
dt=($i~/^ [0-9]+-/)?$i" "$(i+1):dt;
alDFid=($i==" alertDefinitionId")?$(i+2):alDFid;
}
}END{
if(dt!=""){
printf "ID=%dnNAME=%snFIXED=%snDATE=%snAlDefID=%dnn", id,nm,fx,dt,alDFid;
}
}' /tmp/alerts.xml

output will be as below

Code:

ID=10102
NAME=APP-DS-ds_ha-140018-componentFailure-S
FIXED=false
DATE= 2013-01-29 04:58:27.6
AlDefID=13982
.
.
.etc etc many entries will be there

what i want to achieve is
>in the awk command i want to implement a check for date, first i will parse the date

Code:

myDate=$( date --date="$DATE" +%Y%m%d )

and if this date is older than system date then dont print from awk
>also i need to perform one more operation

Code:

sh /opt/hqe/hqapi1-client-5.0.0/bin/hqapi.sh alertdefinition list --id=13982 --host=localhost --port=7443 --user=hqadmin --password=hqadmin --secure=true | grep priority | awk -F'priority=' '{print $2}' | cut -d'"' -f2

whose output will be

Code:

3

PS: i am not good at parsing xml so i did some my own awk and cut to get priority value from xml 🙂

the about is nothing but from the priority obtained for that id and display it on console immediately

————–
so final output will be

Code:

ID=10102
NAME=APP-DS-ds_ha-140018-componentFailure-S
FIXED=false
DATE= 2013-01-29 04:58:27.6
AlDefID=13982
priority=3
.
.
.etc etc many entries will be there

i tried using the hqapi command in quotes “ inside awk but it dint work.
any help on this will be deeply appreciated. thanks

Swapping a string of numbers between higher and lower order values(HEX)

By vivek d r

I have this below string in a variable

Code:

cutString=21222222222222222122222222222222

this string is nothing but hex values depicted as below

Code:

21:22:22:22:22:22:22:22:21:22:22:22:22:22:22:22

so what i want to achieve is swap the lower order with higher order values in the string

Code:

21222222222222222122222222222222

output:
12222222222222221222222222222222

let me give you another exaample

Code:

12345678901234567890123456789012

output:
21436587092143658709214365870921

also i need to do one more implementation

first i need to store this convertted output in one variable say nextString

later i need to introduce a space between each byte as below so that i can loop it in for loop and perform some operation..(PS: there shouldnt be an extra space at the end of string)

Code:

2 1 4 3 6 5 8 7 0 9 2 1 4 3 6 5 8 7 0 9 2 1 4 3 6 5 8 7 0 9 2 1

any help is deeply appreciated. thanks.

even if i can just learn how to introucde spaces, i can handle swapping in for loop by myself. 🙂
