HTML5 apps on all platforms: can Qt help?

A couple of questions for my dear Qt friends: after a long winter, mostly devoted to building and deploying HTML5 games and educational apps, I find myself evaluating Qt again for a big project… It is an app to be used on schools: it must work online and partly offline as well. And it has to run on desktops (Linux/Win) and mobile (Android/iOS).

HTML5 apps have evolved a lot. We built very interesting collaborative things using it, and the team is already familiar with backbone.js and other goodies. But the requirement that part of the funcionality must be available offline is puzzling me for this particular project. HTML5 offline support will no cut it, as data to enable the features we need is not something that fits in the typical localstorage cache solution. So I was thinking about using something like Apache Cordova (previously phonegap) and its sqlite plugin. The thing is that I would very much wanted a single code base…

The research lead to interesting new projects, like node-webkit and chromium embedding framework. All have pros and cons, and none runs on all platforms we need to support.

And then yesterday I found that ICS was working on cordova-qt. So maybe it is possible to build such an app (HTML5 based with local fs support) and really deploy it worldwide from a single codebase? Apparently, not yet… the project appears to be a bit stale. Does anyone know why? Perhaps the announcement that Digia will work on native iOS and Android versions of Qt has made this a lower priority? It would be nice to use a C++ app with QtWebKit, but IIUIC this does not work for iOS and Android, so back to square one, right? Comments are welcome!

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. Reports Revenues and Earnings for the First Quarter 2013

  • First Quarter 2013 Revenue: $1.29 billion; up 11%
  • First Quarter 2013 Operating Income: $125 million; up 7%
  • First Quarter 2013 EPS: 61 cents vs. 57 cents

LOWELL, Ark.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– J. B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., (NAS: JBHT) announced first quarter 2013 net earnings of $73.3 million, or diluted earnings per share of 61 cents vs. first quarter 2012 net earnings of $67.7 million, or 57 cents per diluted share.

Total operating revenue for the current quarter was $1.29 billion, compared with $1.17 billion for the first quarter 2012. Load growth of 13% in Intermodal (JBI) and 47% in Integrated Capacity Solutions (ICS), helped drive 15% and 26% increases in segment revenue, respectively. Dedicated Contract Services (DCS) segment increased operating revenue by 9%, primarily from new long-term contracts currently being implemented, while Truck (JBT) segment revenue declined primarily from a 21% reduction in fleet size.

Operating income for the current quarter totaled $125 million vs. $117 million for the first quarter 2012. Combined, JBI and ICS operating income increased by approximately $18 million on higher load volume, improved freight mix and overhead cost controls. The increase in operating income was partially offset by higher equipment costs in the asset-based business units, higher claims costs from two old claims shared by all business units, contract implementation costs related to new customers for DCS and higher employee costs with lower asset utilization for JBT.

Net interest expense for the current quarter decreased by $0.7 million due to lower debt levels. The effective income tax rate for the quarter was consistent with last year at 38.25%.

Smart Grid Industrial Control Systems Continue to Face Funding Challenges, According to Navigant Research

BOULDER, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Discussions of security for smart grid industrial control systems (ICS) among utilities, vendors, systems integrators, and public regulatorshave become more common in recent years, and utilities as a group appear to be better informed of cyber risks to their gridsand substations. However, funding for these upgrades remains spotty, according to a recent report from Navigant Research. The market for smart grid ICS cyber security will reach $608 million in 2020, expanding at a relatively slow compound annual growth rate of 6.4 percent, the study concludes.

“Utilities’ awareness of potential threats and risks to industrial control systems is growing, but utilities mainly view security as a method of limiting costs, and advances toward meaningful regulations remain weak,” says Bob Lockhart, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “Despite that discouraging overview, though, progress will be steady as the cost of complacency becomes more visible.”

One sign of progress is the increasing number of utility cyber security consulting engagements. However, legacy systems often lack basic information on devices’ locations and their mode of communicating with the network, making security assessments difficult. In such cases, a pre-assessment project to map the network is required. For utilities hoping to deploy one or two new products and declare victory, this can be disappointing news.

The report, “Industrial Control Systems Security”, examines in detail the market dynamics and most important technology issues for the emerging smart grid control systems security sector. The report profiles key providers of control systems cyber security, and provides detailed analysis of the market by smart grid application, by region, and by type of control system technology, including human-machine interfaces, control consoles, telecommunications, and device controllers. Worldwide market forecasts for 2012 through 2020, segmented by application, by technology, and by region, are also presented. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.

Review: Pencil lets you rough in mockups for mobile apps, websites, and desktop software

You may not be a coder or a Web developer, but that doesn’t mean you don’t know exactly how you want your new application or website to look and feel. Trying to get to that perfect look with just words can be a frustrating experience for both client and developer. A good interface mockup is worth a thousand words, and you don’t have to know how to code to create one. In fact, it doesn’t even have to cost you anything: Free utility Pencil contains everything you need to create serviceable mockups for websites, desktop applications, and mobile smartphone apps.

If you’ve ever used a mockup utility, such as free Lumzy or $79 Balsamiq, Pencil’s interface will be familiar. The bulk of the screen is taken up by a canvas, and a toolbar lines the left edge of the window. The toolbar is full of widgets you can put on your canvas, neatly divided into categories like Basic Web Elements, Windows XP Widgets, Android ICS, iOS UI Stencils, and more. In Pencil terminology, each category is a collection of “stencils.”

Pencil ships with many stencil collections, and its Google code repository contains even more, all freely available. For any given project, you’re likely to need only one or two sets of stencils, and Pencil makes it easy to hide stencil sets you don’t need. And just like Lumzy and Balsamiq, the sidebar includes a quick-search box letting you instantly filter the list down to just the UI element you need (“button” and so on).

With its ICS stencil set, Pencil can create convincing mockups for Android apps.

To test Pencil, I used its included Android ICS stencil collection to quickly prototype a single screen for a hypothetical Android app showing PCWorld’s top stories. I got mixed results: The collection includes beautiful stencils for Android’s status bar (the top part of the screen) and navigation bar (the bottom of the screen), but they were the wrong width for my project and there was no way to resize them. Other stencils, such as those used for tabs and list items, could be easily resized. I ended up creating my mockup out of just those stencils, omitting the top and bottom of the screen. Not ideal, but workable.
