Hotel Of The Day: Twin Farms

By Startle.com, Contributor

North Korea flag SC Obama Screwing Up in North Korea

What: This bucolic 300-acre Twin Farms in Vermont has a rich literary and luxury history: The rural estate of famed author Sinclair Lewis, the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature, was lovingly transformed into an escapist boutique resort that has earned the highest Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star award for 18 consecutive years. With a summer camp feel—summer camp for spoiled adults, that is—Twin Farms perfectly balances casual country charm and sporting activities with first-rate cuisine (customized for every guest), impeccable service (as unobtrusive or omnipresent as you wish) and just 20 art strewn and completely unique lodging options. Where: Twin Farms is hidden behind an unmarked gate off a dirt road linking Barnard and charming Woodstock, the popular and historically preserved tourist town long supported by the Rockefeller clan and home to Vermont’s only national park. The resort’s “Beyond Inclusive” rates include private airport transfers from Manchester, N.H. or Burlington, Vt., the closest options, so you don’t have to worry about traversing Vermont’s Green Mountains on your own. When: The idyllic retreat opened its first nine rooms in 1993, and added five additional cottages by 1996—the same year Twin Farms earned its first Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating it has held ever since. It’s a year-round destination with activities appealing to just about everyone: Late spring through fall is ideal for those who want to explore the surrounding countryside, but Vermont’s famed fall foliage season is the ultra-prime time for visiting. And for snow sports enthusiasts, winter is when to stay within the resort, with its elaborate cross-country and snowshoe trail network and private downhill ski mountain. Why: Warm chocolate chip cookies delivered at 2 a.m.? A gourmet champagne picnic perfectly timed to meet you trailside during an afternoon hike? Vegan Kosher meals throughout your stay? How about an impromptu decision to learn how to ski? Not only are they all doable, these amenities are also included. A visit to Twin Farms is like a stay at the country estate of a billionaire friend—staff and all. The entire property becomes an extension of your room, for your needs, whatever they may be. Yet many guests find it hard to leave the custom cottages, each decorated in an elaborate theme, from alpine chalet to treehouse to fly fishing, and each stocked with art from the owner’s museum-quality collection. —Larry Olmsted Read More From Startle.com Celeb Chef Gastropub Trend Sea Island Birding Adventure America’s Cotton Candy Craze Discover the most outstanding places on Startle.com, the online home of Forbes Travel Guide. Hotel Of The Day: The American Club

By Jennifer Kester, Contributor

What: A luxurious Midwest getaway, The American Club is located an hour north of Milwaukee and 2.5 hours north of Chicago. It’s in Kohler, Wis.—as in Kohler the bath company, which owns the American Tudor revival-style Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel. And as you’d expect, Kohler Co. decks out the guest room bathrooms with its top-of-the-line fixtures, including striking briolette glass sinks, a chromotherapy tub that fills from a spout in the ceiling and the “Kohler Showering Experience,” a spacious standalone stall with multiple showerheads to add a massage effect. The décor in the rooms is masculine—think cream-and-beige thick striped wallpaper, and a bamboo-trimmed wooden headboard with wine-colored velvet drapes—but they are cozy and inviting. And the spa-like bathrooms are such an indulgence, they make it difficult to ever want to leave. …read more

The Peninsula's U.S. Hotels All Win Five-Stars

By Hayley Bosch, Contributor

Only a handful of hotels—76 to be exact—surpass the rigorous standards of our incognito inspectors to earn the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating. So it would be unprecedented for one hotel group to receive the prestigious Five-Star rating for all of its U.S. hotels. But this year marked the fourth year in a row that The Peninsula Hotel Group did just that, receiving Five-Star ratings for all three of its properties. The Peninsula Beverly Hills, which was the first U.S. outpost for the China-based hotel group, gained its first Five-Star rating in 1994, while Chicago followed in 2003 and New York in 2010. …read more

Hotel Of The Day: The Hermitage Hotel

By Jennifer Kester, Contributor What: While this Beaux-Arts beauty looks formal—its vaulted lobby features white-gray marble, sculpted ornamental plaster on the walls, and a glass ceiling painted with muses and other mythological creatures—The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville has a relaxed vibe. At this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel, complimentary housemade cookies and fresh-squeezed lemonade are offered in the lobby; the concierge readily recommends spots for the city’s best barbecue; and diners routinely wear denim at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant, Capitol Grille. The 123 spacious guest rooms and suites are also cozy and traditional with warm wood furniture, but they’re stocked with high-tech amenities such as flat-screen TVs in the bathrooms.
